Xiushan Temple in Xiushan Temple in China
Xiushan Temple, located in Ma Qiao 'an Village, xinqiao town, Xinbei District, Changzhou City, was founded in Yang Di period (569-6 18) with a history of 1500 years. It is the oldest Buddhist temple in Changzhou. In the long history, Xiushan Temple has experienced vicissitudes, been destroyed and built repeatedly. During the reign of Youwang in the Northern Song Dynasty (1034-1038), Ding and Ding Zongchen carried out large-scale reconstruction, and in the first year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty, they were renovated and rebuilt according to the style of the palace, reaching the largest scale, with a total of 5048 houses. The temple was almost reduced to ashes in the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Movement, and was rebuilt by private financing. Ma Qiao 'an Primary School was founded in 1942, Xiushan Temple Junior High School was founded in 1947, and later renamed Ma Qiao 'an Junior High School. At present, there are only a dozen bungalows, including two Buddhist temples. Xiushan Temple, a thousand-year-old temple, is the only temple named after Xiushan in China. Around Xiushan Temple, it is dotted from point to surface and surrounded by water. Xiushan Temple is built independently, with unique features, originality and profound meaning. Looking at the ancient canal in front and the Yangtze River in the back, the beauty of water is because Xiushan Temple is born of water, which is indispensable and will never be separated. Xiushan Temple has a unique natural resource of "water", which has this feature and geomantic position in Jiuzhou. At present, Longjiang Road and Changjiang Road, two main roads in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, span both sides of Xiushan Temple. Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway, Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway and Changzhou Airport echo each other from afar. Bus feeder lines such as urban rapid transit are within reach, and roads, railways and aviation are not lacking. The geographical advantage of Xiushan Temple is obvious.

According to Ren's History of Buddhism in China, as early as the period of Emperor Wen of Sui Dynasty, Buddhism established the concept of the supremacy of imperial power and faithfully implemented the principle of "doing things for the country". Therefore, Emperor Wendi of Sui Dynasty built a Daxing Temple with the nature of "national temple" in Beijing, and in Yang Di's period, Zhiyan first put forward the theory of "cultivating goodness", mentioning that all beings are infected with Buddhism. Yang Di controlled the audience with the idea of "being good" and achieved the goal of consolidating his dominant position. Therefore, Xiushan Temple was formally established under this background. Gu wrote the Preface to Rebuilding Genealogy, which states that Xiushan Temple is one of the ancient temples in Changzhou, which was built in Sui Dynasty and its current site still exists.

Ding Ju, the ancestor of Changzhou Shi Ding, was born in the 13th year of Tang Dynasty (859). After the age of 50, he abandoned his official position and went to study in Jiangnan. Because I like the good customs of Changzhou, I settled in the long lane of Xiushan Temple in Dongxiang, Yiren (according to the genealogy of Shi Ding in Piling, Changzhou). It can be seen that Xiushan Temple has become a symbol of a region in the Tang Dynasty, which shows its prosperity and high popularity at that time.

According to the genealogy of Piling in Changzhou (volume 12), Ding Zong-chen and Ding, the seventh generation descendants of Ding Ju, joined the ranks of high school scholars in the first year of Jingyou in Renzong (1034). In order to express their gratitude to their mother, the two men expanded Xiushan Temple to the largest scale ever, with the number of houses reaching 5048. Because it was built in imitation of the imperial palace of the Ming Dynasty, the diameter of the cylinder still preserved today is 1 m, which is unique in the history of temple architecture.

During the reign of Emperor Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty, Emperor Kangxi went down to the south of the Yangtze River and left footprints in Xiushan Temple. Today, there are still stone tablets in Xiushan Temple as evidence, which faintly shows the glory and sublimity of Xiushan Temple.

During the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, Xiushan Temple became the most important gathering place for Buddhist cultural activities in northern Changzhou, with an endless stream of pilgrims from all over the country. Xiushan Temple was famous for a while, and people from all directions benefited from it.

According to local people's description, Xiushan Temple was destroyed by the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Movement, buildings such as Daxiong Hall were burnt down, monks in the temple threw precious cultural relics into wells or buried them underground, and other houses were seriously damaged in the war, so Xiushan Temple entered the lowest tide stage in the long history and slowly disappeared from people's sight. 1, Xiushan Temple and Yang Di Thought.

The unification of the Sui Dynasty brought a relatively peaceful and stable life to the people of all ethnic groups in the country, and for a time there was a scene of "prosperous hukou and surplus warehouse". However, there are still many social problems left over from the war. In order to solve these problems and consolidate its rule, the Sui Dynasty advocated Buddhism as an important tool. In the first year of Huang Kai (58 1), Emperor Wendi of Sui acceded to the throne and ordered the restoration of Buddhism throughout the country, saying that "if you allow yourself to become a monk, you still have to pay for it and make scriptures". Yang Di Yang Guang, the emperor of Sui Dynasty, made an oath in peacetime, calling himself a disciple of Bodhisattva's amulet, and took a protective attitude towards Buddhism. In 59 1 year, King Yang Guang of Jin invited Tiantai Zongzhiyan to come to Yangzhou. Zhiyan gave Yang Guang the title of "forever holding a bodhisattva" (meaning a bodhisattva with complete merits), and Yang Guang gave him the title of "wise man". The most important thought of Zhiyan is his later theory of "sexual truth". Hui Si once said: "If you come and hide, you will be clean." Yan Zhi inherited this idea and developed it into a theory of good and evil. "Q: Is there a distinction between good and evil in human nature? A: Yes. Q: What is the difference between good and evil of Sakyamuni? A: The explanation is perfect, but the essence is good; The Buddha broke the evil, but the evil is there. " In other words, all living beings and buddhas are both pure and good and evil. First, it shows that although people have broken "cultivating goodness", they still have "goodness"; Although the Buddha is "evil", it is "malignant". Yang Xiong, a famous scholar, philosopher, writer and linguist at the end of the Western Han Dynasty, put forward that "human nature is also intertwined with good and evil. Those who cultivate their goodness are good people, and those who cultivate their wickedness are evil people. " This theory of human nature gives all people full rights and opportunities to become sages. In this respect, Ji Yan plays a special role: "What is an empty mind? If you do good, you will know; If you do evil, you know evil; Without doing good and evil, there is no memory. How can these three senses help each other? Only good is evil, evil is good, and good and evil are not divided, just one person and three hearts. " This theory completely obliterates the social roots of morality and turns it into a purely personal ideological problem. Under this historical background, Xiushan Temple naturally came into being and flourished.

2. Buddhist interpretation of Xiushan Temple.

Zeng Yi's Agama Book, Nirvana Sutra, Theory of Wisdom, Golden Eye of Fire and Overview of Stone Works are all that all evil is evil. Are all good practices. Self-purification. All Buddhism ",this sentence 14 1 sums up all Buddhism, and the Buddhist Guang Hai is all in this poem. Multiply the size by 80 thousand and flow out from here. Xiushan Temple advocates that believers should stick to rationality in their words and deeds and be diligent in practicing good deeds according to their hearts, which is consistent.

The volume of "On a Hundred Schools of Thought" said: "The Buddha said that there are two kinds of good methods, that is, to stop all evils and stop them in the name; Cultivating all good deeds is a name ... how good is it? Be honest, say hello, cross your hands, be respectful and so on. Speech language, harmonious language, soft language, interesting language, compassion and right view, etc. If so, are all kinds of clean laws justified? ..... If the practitioner is not only evil, he cannot cultivate good. " Among them, cultivating goodness refers to cultivating ten kinds of goodness, that is, Buddhist precepts. Ding's Dictionary of Buddhism explains "cultivating goodness" and says: "Breaking evil into good. For the name of good nature, the intrinsic good is called good nature, and the cultivated good is praised for cultivation. Cultivating goodness is good nature, and so is talking about Mahayana. " Everything has a cause, and good causes must be created by ourselves. There are good causes, and there will be good results in the future. Compassion, equality, respect, filial piety to parents, respect for teachers and caring for all beings with compassion are all good deeds. Be kind and cultivate good karma. Good deeds are enough because of good deeds. No matter what you do, it will be smooth and satisfactory. Understanding these truths and practicing them will certainly achieve all kinds of good laws and virtues.

3. The religious status of Xiushan Temple.

For more than a thousand years, Xiushan Temple has formed its own long history and unique religious culture. There have been glory and decline, a vast territory and dilapidated houses, but its position in the national Buddhist community has always been unshakable. Today's Xiushan Temple, whether it is a big column, Big Ben, a chronicle stone tablet, a memorial arch, a stone well, a moat or the concept of "being kind" that it has always advocated, is our precious wealth. There are two temples named Xiushan Temple in the world, one is Xiushan Temple in Izu and the other is Xiushan Temple in Changzhou, China. In this sense, Changzhou Xiushan Temple is the only one in China.

Xiushan Temple in China and Xiushan Temple in Japan not only share the same name and surname, but also are in the same era, and folk stories are all originated from filial piety. If it is not a coincidence, there must be some connection between the two. Xiushan Temple Town in Japan is located in the middle of Izu Peninsula. This ancient temple was founded by the Buddhist master Konghai in the second year of Datong (AD 807) in the early period of Heian. In the early Kamakura period, it was renamed Xiushan Temple from Guigushan Temple. That is the temple where the master practiced when he was young. Konghai (774-835 AD), a Buddhist master, is the founder of Shinrikyo and enjoys a high reputation as a pioneer representing Japanese culture. After Master Kong Hai and his disciples established a religious style, this temple was managed by a famous sect for nearly 1200 years. At first, it belonged to the mantra school, and later it was changed to the Lin Ji school in Lianchang period, and later it was Cao Dongzong, with a long history. There is a unique cobalt hot spring running through the village in front of Xiushan Temple. It is the first and oldest hot spring in Izu, and it still gushes spring water and tells a touching story. Here, moved by the dutiful son's tireless care for his sick mother, a Buddhist master, a monk, made a spring with a dead stick in Guichuan, and the hot spring water flowed out to cure the dutiful son's mother. This spring is the unique cobalt fish pond in Xiushan Temple today. On May 12, 804, the Japanese calendar lasted for 23 years, and the Buddhist master set out with the Japanese delegation to the Tang Dynasty for the first time 17. After going through difficulties and obstacles, I arrived in Chang 'an on February 23rd/KLOC-0 that year. But it can't prove that he has some connection with Xiushan Temple in Changzhou. The historical relics stored in the temple can only prove that it has a long history, and there are no other reliable information resources to share. The stories circulating in the temple are also legends, but there are no historical books. The real history needs further argumentation.

4. Cultural textual research of Xiushan Temple.

Hydration shapes the body on the earth and blends life into everything. Xiushan Temple is surrounded by water. Against the background of water flow, temple buildings show long-term vitality, solemn but not rigid, dignified and colorful. "Good nature is like water" comes from the eighth chapter of Laozi's Tao Te Ching: "Good nature is like water: water is good at everything without contention, which is the virtue of humility; Therefore, Jianghai can be the king of the hundred valleys, and with its goodness, it can be the king of the hundred valleys. " The kindest person is like water. He is good at nourishing everything without competing with it, so he is closest to the Tao. Lao Tzu first compared the personality of noble people to water, thinking that their character is like water, one is soft, the other is to stay in humble places, and the third is to nourish everything without fighting. People who cultivate goodness should also have this mentality and behavior. Not only do they defeat the enemy without fighting, but they are also willing to do things that others are unwilling to do. This is Laozi's famous idea of "benefiting without fighting".

Water plays an important role in the practice of Buddhist monks. Especially the bathing of Buddhists, there are special regulations in Buddhism. "Monks are pure." (Six Ancestors Tanjing, Confession No.6) Buddhists should not only wash away the dirt on their bodies, but also purify their hearts, so as to get rid of the dirt and obtain a clean method. "Wei Mo Jing" said: "The bath of eight solutions is full of water, and the flowers of seven cleannesses are distributed, and there is no dirt in the bath." Therefore, bathing is a very important religious activity in ancient India, the birthplace of Buddhism, and it is quite common. When the monks of the Tang Dynasty went west to seek the Dharma, they described the scene of the monks bathing at that time: "It was a blessing for everyone to wear a pool at that time ... Every morning, when the temple was full of health, the monks bathed in their skirts, or thousands or hundreds of people walked out of the temple and dispersed into the pool to bathe themselves." (The Biography of the South China Sea Returning to the Inner Law, Volume III) Bathing is not only to wash away the dirt on the body, but also to eliminate diseases and disasters and obtain endless blessings.

"Water" embodies the nobility of "goodness" and "goodness" embodies the agility of "water". The "cultivation of goodness" in Buddhism coincides with the quality embodied by water. In Buddhist culture, we don't compete with everything for profit. The greatest goodness in the world is like water. The ancients said, "See the guests off in the river and stay in the moon to moisten the people." This characteristic of water can be described as "good", and Xiushan Temple can not be separated from the foil, cultivation and sublimation of boiling water. 1, folk custom. Literature and art, which originated from labor, is characterized by oral communication, easy memory and handed down from generation to generation. It is also the spiritual product of productive labor in human society and the reflection of objective reality under specific historical conditions. The folk custom of Xiushan Temple is closely related to the profound cultural connotation of Xiushan Temple, which is conducive to our profound understanding of the cultural connotation of Xiushan Temple.

There are many folk stories about Xiushan Temple. At present, the relatively complete ones are mainly Shi Ding Brothers and Xiushan Temple, and there is a broken Xiushan Temple in Baitaiguan. There are many versions. After sorting out and comprehensive analysis, two relatively complete folk stories are finally formed.

Shi Ding Brothers and Xiushan Temple. Legend has it that there was a big village called Changxiang Village in Xiaoxinqiao at the end of Yuan Dynasty and the beginning of Ming Dynasty. There is a Ding in the village, and both brothers have become top students in high school and become big officials. Shi Ding's mother wanted to go to Beijing to see the palace, so Shi Ding's brother built a palace in the village, completely imitating it. The fake palace is not yet finished. In court, a traitor slandered the Shi Ding brothers for building a palace in the Ming Dynasty, secretly forming a group and plotting evil. Zhu Yuanzhang sent his uncle and his family to Liu Bowen, Changxiang Village for investigation. When he arrived in Changzhou, Liu Bowen was really surprised to see a towering contiguous building. After investigation, Liu Bowen knew the reason and gave the Shi Ding brothers an idea to use the imitation palace as a temple, so as to settle this nearly fatal lawsuit. This is the origin of Shi Ding brothers rebuilding Xiushan Temple. Xiushan Temple is not far from the long lane. When Liu Bowen rode to his uncle's house, he dismounted from a stone bridge at the entrance of the village and tied his horse to a pile of stones. From then on, everyone called this bridge "Saddle Bridge".

Bai Taiguan broke the temple of goodness. In other words, Mr. Bai Taiguan's brother, Wo Yun Zen Master, took advantage of Changzhou people's superstition about bodhisattvas and took money from everyone on the pretext of putting gold on bodhisattvas. He received a donation of 202,000 taels of silver within one month. He used the huge sum of money raised by donations to enrich himself and support ten young mistresses, known as the "Ten Beauty of Dragon City", and did evil at will. Bai Taiguan advised with good intentions, but he was injured. White is the last straw. He rushed to the Shaolin Temple in Songshan, Henan Province on a starry night to meet the master and expose the matter. I don't know if the wicked lying in the clouds will sue first, and the believers will go up the mountain with sticks in advance, falsely accusing Taiguan of being evil in Changzhou. The space master listened to rumors, tied him up after he went up the mountain, burned him alive, and let him die a natural death as punishment. Buddhism calls him "Xie Lianhua". Bai Taiguan had no choice but to beg his brothers to take care of his mother, wife and children as much as possible after his death. At this moment, the eagle whined and the horse hissed for it. To be sure, a grievance was settled. At this critical juncture, Master Taixu, the master in charge of space in Shaolin Temple, descended from the sky and rushed back to the temple to correct this almost irreparable injustice. The space master woke up in the face of the facts and was determined to catch the evil monk lying in the clouds and correct the Buddhism. At this moment, the tears of Bai Taiguan, who was extremely tired, flowed silently, and the disciples of Shaolin Temple cheered like a flash flood. This sound went straight into the sky, turned into the sword of justice, and stabbed all evil people in the chest.

2. Shuangguifang-Changzhou literati culture. Ding Shi surnamed tang's "Shuanggui" originated from Ding Zongchen and Ding Ju's seventh grandson Ding, and entered the same high school in the first year of Jingyou in Renzong (1034). Shi Ding brothers were born in the long lane of Xiushan Temple and lived in Laixian Square, the county seat. Because both brothers went to Jiake and took the meaning of "laurel of the moon", Xianfang was renamed Shuanggui Square, which is the origin of the place name of Shuanggui Square in this city. At that time, Shi Ding brothers had deep friendship with Ouyang Xiu, Wang Anshi and Su Shi, officials of the same dynasty, and many of them presented poems. Ding Cong, the son of Ding Zongchen, is the daughter of Guan Taichang, the wife of Su Shi's grandnephew Su Peng, and has a poem "Reward Su Dongpo with a nephew". So, four years after Ding's death (1067), Ouyang Xiu wrote an epitaph and an epitaph for him. If Ouyang Xiu and Wang Anshi write epitaphs and eulogies for Changzhou citizens, I'm afraid there is no one else.

Shuangguifang is the first street in Changzhou. It is located in the east of Dassault Lane and the west of South Street. Although it is only more than 300 meters long, there are many historical sites, bearing the profound scholar culture of Changzhou. There used to be jia county Temple, also known as ji zi Temple, which was a special holy place for Ji Zha, the ancestor of Changzhou people. The group art museum in the former People's Park was the former site of the temple. Zhengjue Temple is an important place name in Changzhou. According to Kangxi's Changzhou Fuzhi, Zhengjue Temple was built in the Kaiyuan period of the Tang Dynasty, and Li Zunshe, a doctor of the Tang Dynasty, lived in the temple. There is also a temple to the west of Zhengjue Temple, which was built during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty to commemorate Chen Qia, a senior minister of the Ministry of War who died in the early Ming Dynasty to quell the civil strife in Vietnam. Chen Qia is the younger brother of Chen Ji, editor-in-chief of Yongle Dadian, the largest encyclopedia in ancient China. Ji zi Temple is also connected with Yanling Academy.

3. Ding Moment, Jiang Xu and Liu Bowen-Changzhou Celebrity Culture. There are many celebrities related to Xiushan Temple. Ding Ju "lives in the long lane of Xiushan Temple in Dongxiang, Yi people"; Jiang Xu "moved from Wuxi to Nanmengjia Village, Xiushan Temple outside Qingshan Gate in Changzhou"; Grandma Liu Bowen's hometown is located in the long lane, and the folk story of "Saddle Bridge" is well known. According to one of the earliest existing genealogies in Changzhou, The Shi Ding Genealogy of Piling (Tibetan version of Shuangguitang), this clan was a farmer of Zhao Zongchao (889-904) in the Tang Dynasty who moved to Changzhou from Jiyang (now Shandong). Gu's "Preface to the Compilation of Music" states: "In the Tang Dynasty, Yuan went to the south of the Yangtze River and was accustomed to the common customs. It has been more than forty generations, and it has been heard in Tang, Song, Yuan and Ming Dynasties. He died in the second year of Tiancheng (927) at the age of 69. Buried in the south of Dingshuqiao (now Shishu Village, xinqiao town). In Changzhou history, almost all Ding Ming people came from this ethnic group. Living in Changzhou, he attaches great importance to the compilation of genealogy, which has been uninterrupted for more than 1000 years, so that he can understand the general situation of the evolution and migration of Ding descendants. There are many famous people named Ding in Changzhou history: Ding in Song Dynasty (1010-1067) and his elder brothers and ministers are all scholars, with a good reputation. They have served as local officials in many places and are tired of keeping secrets from officials. When he was in office, he was very good at promoting advantages and eliminating disadvantages. Song emperor "English Sect must call each word." Jiang Tang Jia in Ma 'an Village is one of the birthplaces of the Jiang family in Changzhou.
