Characteristics of works

Chen Xiangxun's works are deeply branded with Zhejiang Chinese painting: attaching importance to form and pen and ink, and attaching importance to the tradition of literati painting. However, he alienated the New Zhejiang School's reverence for realistic modeling and became close to deformation and expression. He kept his predecessors' interest in charm and gave up following and using fixed procedures. He knew that it was too difficult to surpass the pen and ink of the ancients in general, so he adopted a strategy, that is, separating a certain part from the established formal structure of the ancients, isolating it, and then strengthening and exaggerating it into his own new structure.

Chen Xiangxun's works have undergone several changes since 1984. Every change is an exploration and a self-denial. This change is different from some imitators who follow the trend. It has been carefully brewed, seriously thought and tested. Every piece of work is painted with all my strength, not on a whim.

1989, Chen Xiangxun created a series of works that combined characters with landscapes, extended effects and writing effects, which can be called "figure painting series". Some people try to introduce words into the picture, making it the protagonist of the form, and aromatherapy is inevitably influenced by them. However, he did not emphasize the meaning of words, nor did he appreciate words as an independent and comfortable composition. He regards them as a kind of texture, which blends with the landscape, making the rubbinglike ancient characters and chaotic landscape symbols fill the picture, giving people a heavy sense of history.

Chen Xiangxun's exploration has expanded to a new field. He drew a set of flower still life paintings, not sketches, but compositions. The background color is deep, the flowers are light, the ink seems to be the background, and the colors seem to be in the foreground, at least in the sense. He didn't brush with a combination brush, but always dyed with a round brush and a pen. He doesn't want to pursue the light and color effect of imitating western painting. He paints meticulously and heartily only by feeling. Jiangnan group painting

After graduation, I created a group of paintings in the south of the Yangtze River for the first time: I changed my face with traditional pen and ink-division, overlapping, simplification, emotionalization, etc., to achieve the unity of traditional style charm and modern structure. Apprenticeship series

1987' s Classmates Series is a group of huge acrylic ink paintings without coloring. The lyrical style in "Jiangnan Group Paintings" has disappeared, and the relaxed memories have become deep, heavy and insightful thinking. The ancient wrinkle removal method is an isolated aesthetic protagonist, not just the texture of the rock, which blurs the human body into an independent body, strengthens the black color, makes it full of picture sense, and produces a huge effect of being as muddy as night. This is one of the most influential ink paintings since the 1980s. Its value mainly lies in the form of language creation, not ideological implication. Its transformation and reconstruction of landscape symbols not only inherits and draws lessons from style, but also denies and deviates from style. This is Chen Xiangxun's development of modern ink painting style after cleaning.

Garden series

"Garden Series" is another group of works that are carried out at the same time as still life flowers. Still do not seek a sense of space, do not need focus perspective, its intention is the same as the flower series; The method of plane composition is used to reconstruct the garden image, which is far from the realistic simulation of nature and the freehand brushwork form of shape. Objects and images are symbolized; Pavilions, bridges, pools, windows, corridors, stacked stones, flowers and trees, only take their silhouette, or simplify them into a typical part, or abstract them into a symbol. Objects and images are not arranged according to the spatial order of objects, but are organized according to the needs of form, that is, order is subordinate to mind and vision. Color and ink painting play different roles: ink painting constitutes the skeleton of garden buildings, giving works a sense of weight and culture; Color shapes the image of nature and endows the picture with vivid life and lyrical atmosphere. Painting is multi-layered coloring on an ink base (such as painting a roof, first applying thick ink, and then applying mottled azurite or turquoise, so that the charm of ancient buildings emerges), or applying ink on a color base. The picture is cut in a straight line and the shadows are misplaced, as if it were like a garden. Trees, leaves or flowers are often decorated, or branches do not see flowers and leaves, or branches do not see flowers and leaves, and the land is blue, that is a tree. Painters are still interested in richness, such as using a fine pen to hook gold or silver flowers or leaves on multiple layers of ink; In some places, sometimes, there will be expanded words, and almost all seals are punched in rows and pieces, which becomes a part of composition and color.
