Nanjing University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education and the Central Government. It is one of the first national key universities with "Double First Class", "2 1 1 Project" and "985 Project", and was selected into the first batch of "Everest Plan", "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Plan", "Excellent Doctor Education and Training Plan" and "Excellent Legal Talents Education and Training Plan".
1902 was founded in Nanjing University of Sanjiang Normal School, and has undergone many changes since then. 1949 was renamed as "National Nanjing University" and renamed as "Nanjing University" the following year, which is still in use today.

The school, formerly known as Nanjing Institute of Aeronautical Technology, was founded in June 1952, and is one of the earliest aviation institutions of higher learning in New China.
The school has two campuses, the Forbidden City and Jiangjun Road, covering an area of 2 154 mu.
