The questions raised in Wu Xunchuan are fundamental. People like Wu Xun were in the era of great struggle of China people against foreign invaders and domestic reactionary rulers in the late Qing Dynasty. They didn't touch the feudal economic base and superstructure at all, but enthusiastically publicized feudal culture and did everything they could to reactionary feudal rulers in order to gain a position they didn't have. This is an ugly behavior, which is not worthy of our praise.
Chairman Mao seriously pointed out that the question raised by Wu Xunchuan was fundamental. Admitting or tolerating its praise "means admitting or tolerating the reactionary propaganda that slanders the peasant revolutionary struggle, the history of China and the Chinese nation as legal propaganda".
He said that "some * * * members who claimed to have learned Marxism well … even surrendered to this reactionary thought". And thus come to the serious conclusion that "bourgeois ideology has invaded the battle * * *".
Chairman Mao also said: "The appearance of Wu Xunchuan, especially the praise of Wu Xun and Wu Xunchuan, shows the degree of ideological confusion in China's cultural circles."
Our socialist society has developed to a new historical stage, and our socialist cultural undertakings should also move forward. Our Party Central Committee and the broad masses of the people have been calling for the spring of socialist art.
Therefore, we should have a clear understanding and accurate judgment of various popular cultural products in society: what is the real advanced socialist culture? What belongs to reactionary feudal culture? What belongs to decadent bourgeois culture? What kind of culture should we advocate and support? What culture is opposed and stopped?
We should make these fundamental issues clear with Marxist materialistic viewpoints and viewpoints. Only by understanding these fundamental problems can we prescribe the right medicine and thoroughly eradicate those reactionary, toxic and insensitive things in time.
Only when we truly belong to the advanced socialist cultural cause can we truly prosper and promote the smooth progress of our socialist cause.
