The questions raised in Wu Xunchuan are fundamental. People like Wu Xun were in the era of great struggle of China people against foreign invaders and domestic reactionary rulers in the late Qing Dynasty. They didn't touch the feudal economic base and superstructure at all, but enthusiastically publicized feudal culture and did everything they could to reactionary feudal rulers in order to gain a position they didn't have. This is an ugly behavior, which is not worthy of our praise.

Chairman Mao seriously pointed out that the question raised by Wu Xunchuan was fundamental. Admitting or tolerating its praise "means admitting or tolerating the reactionary propaganda that slanders the peasant revolutionary struggle, the history of China and the Chinese nation as legal propaganda".

What belongs to reactionary feudal culture? What belongs to decadent bourgeois culture? What kind of culture should we advocate and support? What culture is opposed and stopped?
