Jining, a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Shandong Province, is a type II big city. It is one of the central cities in Huaihai Economic Zone, a famous historical and cultural city and a waterfront eco-tourism city approved by Shandong Provincial Government. Jining has a long history and culture, and is one of the important birthplaces of Dongyi culture, Huaxia civilization, Confucian culture, Shuihu culture and Canal culture. The earliest ancestors of mankind, Huangdi, Confucius, Mencius, Yan Hui and historian Zuo Qiuming, were all born here. During the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, Jining became an important industrial and commercial city along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal.
Jining is located in the hinterland of southwest Shandong, at the junction of Huang-Huai-Hai Plain and south-central Shandong. It borders Linyi City in the east, Heze City in the west, Zaozhuang City and Xuzhou City in Jiangsu Province in the south, Tai 'an City in the north, and Liaocheng City across the Yellow River in the northwest corner.
Jining belongs to the junction of Taiyi low hill in southern Shandong and Huanghuaihai plain in southwestern Shandong, and belongs to the fault block depression in southwestern North China in geological structure.
