The school's predecessor was the German Medical College founded by paulun erich in 1907. 1908 was renamed Tongji Wende yiguang; 19 12, together with Tongji Devon Engineering School, is called Tongji Devon Medical Engineering School; Tongji University was officially named1923; 1927 National Tongji University, one of the seven earliest national universities in China.

As of May 2022, the school has 29 professional colleges and 82 undergraduate enrollment majors, covering engineering, science, medicine, management, economics, philosophy, literature, law, education, art and other disciplines 10.

Among the alumni, 162 were elected as academicians of China Academy of Sciences and China Academy of Engineering.
