What is the real meaning of becoming a monk in Buddhism?
In today's society, many people don't understand Buddhism, but they talk nonsense about Buddhism. They subjectively believe that Buddhism is a superstition, and becoming a monk only escapes through the introduction of one-sided knowledge obtained from books and the commercialization of movies and television. Often regard a person's becoming a monk as a major blow or setback, such as lovelorn, career failure, poverty, evil and so on. Then hide in an empty door and spend the rest of your life facing the yellow roll. Many monks don't know what they are doing when they become monks. They don't know how to practice hard. They can't help the world without asking about reincarnation. Therefore, they must understand the true meaning of becoming a monk. 1. What is a monk? "Becoming a monk" is a transliteration of Sanskrit Pravrajv, which can also be translated as "forest dweller", meaning to get rid of secular life and cultivate a clean life. It was originally a hermit system of Brahmanism in Vedic India, and it has been used since the rise of Buddhism. Zeng Yi Agama said: "If four surnames shave their beards and become monks with faith, they should destroy their real names and call themselves disciples of Sakyamuni." (1) When Sakyamuni Buddha first became a monk, he made four wishes: to help all beings in danger, to remove their obstacles, to break the Jaken of all beings, and to endure their sufferings. It can be seen that becoming a monk is not only for yourself, but also for the public. Buddhism emphasizes that anyone who leaves home for a temple or becomes a monk should take these four wishes as his own responsibility. From the nature of becoming a monk, there are three kinds: 1, both physically and mentally becoming a monk: living in a mountain temple is becoming a monk; In my mind, I no longer admire the worldly pleasures of the five desires, regardless of fame and fortune, but become a monk; Unity of body and mind, peace of mind and happiness, is to become a monk with both body and mind. This is the right way and the duty of becoming a monk. 2. Being a monk is not a monk: living in a mountain temple, my mind and appearance are inconsistent, and I am eager for five pleasures. This is to live, even to become a monk for the prestige and status of society. This is reprimanded by the Buddha, but it is also common in the last days of France. 3, the heart is not a monk: this is a holy bodhisattva, they don't live in the mountain temple, but they no longer admire the secular five desires, regardless of fame and gain. But this is by no means what ordinary people can do, so it is not a common way to become a monk and cannot be a monk. Becoming a monk in this paper refers to the first kind, becoming a monk in both body and mind. Second, the true meaning of becoming a monk The so-called "home" is considered by great wisdom as a prison that binds the body and mind, while fools regard it as a place of happiness and enjoyment. The Nirvana Sutra says: "Being forced to stay at home is like a prison, and all troubles arise from it. Being a monk is like vanity, and all good laws are increased. " The simplest and most obvious meaning of becoming a monk is to give up the lay man and stay away from home, shave off the beard and put on the cassock, and actively and confidently accept the net precept. But this is just a layman, leading to victory. It is the real monk's worrier, who has five possessions and three families. This shows that the real meaning of becoming a monk is to get rid of life and death and achieve Buddhism and Taoism. Our teacher, Buddha Sakyamuni, and even the Three Buddhas also achieved Buddhism and Taoism because they became monks. Hua Yanjing said, "If you don't know how to become a monk. Being happy with life and death without seeking liberation is a bodhisattva who sacrifices the wealth of the country and seeks its silence. " Therefore, becoming a monk is not passive and idle, but shoulders the sacred mission of breaking away from reincarnation and spending time with yourself. 1, becoming a monk is to face life positively, and becoming a monk is to break away from family bondage. When Sakyamuni Buddha showed himself as a prince, he saw the hardships of old age, illness and death in life, resolutely gave up the throne and became a monk, and finally proved to be supreme bodhi. Becoming a monk is not an easy task, let alone simply "seeing through the world of mortals". This is a great move. So Goodwin said, "Becoming a monk is a matter for a gentleman, not for a prince." Being a monk is a house of three realms of fire, a house of life and death. It is the first step to promote the goodness of human nature and climb the peak of Bodhi Mountain with compassion and joy. Becoming a monk is a false "cangue" into a real "home", and it is the beginning of getting rid of suffering, jumping out of the shackles of fame and fortune and pursuing the true meaning of life. Being a monk is a kind of transcendence in life. Let yourself take a step forward, solve the suffering of old age, illness and death, eliminate the confusion of life and enhance the realm of life, which is the positive face of life. It is more important to become a monk, know Jaken's family background and be selfish, so as to improve his personality, realize his life, manage the public and have feelings for interests. This is the real meaning of becoming a monk. There is a couplet that says, "If you are troubled, you will be admitted to Bodhi Gate". No wonder the emperor shunzhi wrote in "Becoming a Monk" that "there is a mountain of food in the jungle on earth, and you can eat it at the edge of the bowl. Gold and white jade are not expensive, but robes are difficult! " (4) In the secular world, when many people encounter any setbacks or blows, they often say that I want to become a monk, or that I want to become a monk. In fact, most people simply don't understand the true meaning of becoming a monk. Many people mistakenly regard the temple as a refuge, thinking that when they enter the temple, they will be clean and free. But it often backfires, and in the end, I will only feel more and more annoyed. In fact, the heart is clean everywhere, and peace of mind is safe everywhere! Knowing that you are wrong, how can you be clean, virtuous and safe? I don't know Buddhism in my heart Even if I become a monk, my heart can't be clean. It's just that I am not a monk. As the saying goes, "Without further ado, I am busy with six things. I don't know what's wrong with Buddhist beings, but what I have done is rewarded. " Becoming a monk is to inherit the Tathagata family business and continue the Buddha's wisdom. It is a noble belief from the heart, seeking Buddhism and Taoism to transform all beings, helping all beings get rid of suffering and realizing the eternal truth of Buddhism. 2. Being a monk is filial piety. Becoming a monk is a great filial piety in the world. It is the supreme act, not what the world imagines-becoming a monk is heartless and unintentional, and it is even misunderstood that becoming a monk is to sever relations with six relatives and is a manifestation of unfilial parents. This is actually a wrong idea. "Buddhism is in the world and never leaves the world." Live with an open mind. If you are divorced from life, you are a Buddhist idiot. When the Buddha said "broken", he told you to break "persistence" instead of clinging to emotional delusions. He didn't ask you to break your parents' kindness and everything, but sublimated your affair into compassion. If you break everything, it will be illegal. Without law, you can't learn Buddhism, and practice is useless, as meaningless as a dead tree. The Buddha taught us to respect all sentient beings, be grateful to all sentient beings, and repay our parents' kindness with our own liberation. After the Buddha became a monk, he went back to honor his father and aunt. Is it unfilial for the Buddha to show his law when his father was ill and personally help him carry the coffin after his father died? Let's look at the old monk Xu Yun. In order to repay his parents' kindness, he walked from Putuo Mountain in Zhejiang Province to Xiangwutai Mountain for three years, rain or shine, and returned all his merits to his late parents. Can you say his family is unfilial? Only people who don't know Buddhism will misunderstand that Buddhism doesn't value filial piety. If you are unfilial to your parents and can't do well, how can you practice? Buddha wants to become a monk, be merciful, be a bodhisattva, be self-interested, benefit all beings, repay four kinds of kindness, help three kinds of suffering, and even take care of bugs and ants. How can he not be filial to his parents? The way to become a monk for filial piety is mainly to repay the kindness of parenting through practice. If parents have difficulties in life, the precepts also allow monks to support their parents and even live in temples or nearby. We have countless parents who are robbing reincarnation. Become a monk all one's life, diligently practice good dharma, and transform all beings (including parents). Through the change of lifestyle, they bring breakthroughs, help practice and achieve physical and mental liberation, and then they can save their parents who were robbed in this life. Therefore, "one son becomes a monk, and nine families ascend to heaven." Therefore, becoming a monk is the most respectful to parents, and the most respectful to parents is nothing more than becoming a monk. Filial piety is in the family and filial piety is in the world. Becoming a monk is not for the sake of enjoyment, thinking that eating ten ways of support, being free and casual, and reading scriptures and meditating are practice. Becoming a monk is to let yourself transcend the three realms first, and then serve all beings with enlightened wisdom, so that all beings can really benefit and move from superstition to consciousness. All sentient beings, including parents, take care of themselves with Buddhism and practice, and return the merits and demerits of "giving, keeping precepts, enduring humiliation, struggling, prajnaparamita and meditation" to their parents and sentient beings. As the saying goes, "one person learns Buddhism and the whole family benefits." This is the real filial piety! Therefore, becoming a monk is to benefit all beings and achieve Buddhism and Taoism. Only in this way can you become a real monk. You don't escape from reality, you don't avoid disaster, you don't run away from home. Being a monk is affectionate, not heartless, and the Tao seems to be heartless. Third, the practical significance of becoming a monk 1, the significance of becoming a monk to oneself, practicing according to precepts, developing one's wisdom because of precepts, and finally getting a complete liberation. Master Taixu said: "Only by relying on Buddhism, you can achieve it in personality, and once you succeed, you will become a Buddha. This is the real reality." If you can put your faith into life, practice in the present, integrate Buddhism into the world, and integrate individuals into the public, you are a true practitioner. A woman's world is a pure land on earth, uncomfortable and unhappy everywhere. Only when you become a monk can you find true happiness: others will be happy, and others will be happy. Bodhi is willing to "not seek happiness for himself, but hope that all beings will avoid suffering." Then, in real life, we will be a person who doesn't have many troubles. Even if troubles arise involuntarily, we can quickly adjust our mentality and return to calm and relaxation. When Buddhism gives us a second life, we must accept all people with joy, understand all people with gentleness, treat all people with compassion, respect all people with respect and treat all people with gratitude! 2. The significance of becoming a monk to Buddhism depends on the spread of Buddhism. One more monk will have more power to carry forward Buddhism and more hope for Buddhism to flourish. If Buddhism wants to live forever in the world, only monk treasure can shoulder this heavy responsibility, and the spread and continuation of Buddhism depends entirely on the power of monk treasure. The Merit Sutra of Zambezi emphasizes that many monks can live in the lifeblood of the Three Treasures, which continues the wisdom and brilliance of the Buddha. As the saying goes, "a monk's disciple can perform his duties with a clear conscience and inherit the Buddha's last law." Ordinary people are boundless in the laity and cannot be teachers. " (7) Looking at the history and present situation of Buddhism spreading in India, Tibet and Han nationality, it is an indisputable fact that the Buddha relies on monks to promote Buddhism. It is difficult for modern people to accept Buddhism, and the biggest obstacle is ignorance and misunderstanding of Buddhism, which is related to the long-term education that everyone has received and also reflects the lack of Buddhism promotion. For a long time, the promotion of Buddhism has always been excluded from the current education system, and people can't get a positive understanding from textbooks in the process of education. The only introduction is the conclusion drawn from the perspective of materialism, and most of them stay in the wrong one-sided understanding. Therefore, the revitalization of Buddhism has a long way to go, and Buddhism needs more monks. 3. The significance of becoming a monk to the whole society. The healthy development of society should not only improve material civilization, but also build spiritual civilization, otherwise the social development will be unbalanced. Actively promoting Buddhism is conducive to the construction of socialist spiritual civilization, so that economic development will not go to one-sided and blind extremes. Buddhism is the method of mind, Buddhism is the perfect education for all beings in the nine methods, and modern society advocates harmony, which is in line with the fundamental spirit of Buddhism. Buddhism is about harmony rather than opposition, and everyone can learn from Buddhism. If the whole world can believe in Buddhism and learn from it, there will be no disputes in the world and people will live in harmony. Monks should bear the Tathagata family business, continue the wisdom of Buddhism, seek Buddhism and Taoism, and descend all beings. Although the individual's strength is very small, if we can really talk about what the Buddha said and do what the Buddha did, we will certainly be able to drive more people and contribute our meager strength to the harmonious development of society. It is a monk's responsibility to purify society and improve people's hearts. It can help people turn evil into good with compassion, so there will be no competition in the world. If all beings really become monks, then this filthy and evil world will become a pure land of Buddhism, and everyone will be a lotus without bloodshed. Therefore, shaving and becoming a monk is a truly beneficial society and life will be meaningful. Conclusion Becoming a monk is a religious belief and a pursuit of life, pursuing a free, comfortable and sincere life. Choice means voluntary, without any compulsion. Being a monk integrates individual life into the public through group life, improves the quality of life in public life and realizes life liberation; At the same time, through the radiation of the group, the wisdom of life is transmitted to the world, the common progress of individuals and society is promoted, and the world is a pure land of peace.
