Gao Mai's profound knowledge and excellent articles are admired by the world. Scholars call books such as Yao's Compilation of Ancient Literatures in Tongcheng as the deep sea of learning and the gateway of textual research. At that time, Japanese scholars called his textual research "China's three wonders" with the poetics of Huang Jie (word Huiwen) in Guangdong and the ancient prose of Wu Kaisheng (word Beijiang) in Tongcheng. Mr. Lu Xun once worked with him in the social education department, and spoke highly of his knowledge and character.
Ideologically, Gao Mai loves the motherland. When the Japanese invaders occupied Beiping, he closed the door and said that he was sick and did not cooperate with the enemy. On his deathbed, he recited Lu You's poem Xiuzi, which showed the noble sentiment of a patriotic intellectual.
