Wang Yihang has been engaged in potato breeding, potato tissue culture and virus-free rapid propagation system construction and potato industrialization development for 25 years, taking root in the rural front line and devoting the most precious years to the potato cause. He presided over the completion of more than national, provincial and ministerial potato research and development projects 10, and successively bred 6 new varieties of Chengdu potato series, with a cumulative promotion area of more than 20 million mu and an additional output value of10.27 billion yuan. Among them, Longshu 3, a new potato variety with high starch content, is the first new variety bred in China, which has achieved a new breakthrough in potato breeding with high starch content in China and reached the international advanced level. This variety has now become a well-known brand of potato production in Gansu, and its planting scope has expanded to the northwest provinces (regions).

Under the leadership of Wang Yihang, the discipline construction of potato in Northwest China has made great progress, from the original single potato breeding research to a specialized potato research institute integrating potato germplasm innovation, new variety breeding, virus-free tissue culture and rapid propagation, improved seed base construction, standardized cultivation, processing and development, and technical training services. The Huichuan Potato Breeding Station of Gansu Academy of Agricultural Sciences, which he is in charge of, has become the radiation diffusion center of new potato varieties and technologies. In 2005, it was named "Key Field Scientific Observation Experimental Station of Potato Resources of the Ministry of Agriculture" by the Ministry of Agriculture. Driven by this station for a long time, Weiyuan County has become a well-known "hometown of potato varieties in China".

In recent years, Wang Yihang has been busy popularizing new potato varieties and advanced breeding techniques, covering Weiyuan, Lintao, Anding, Tongwei and other places, holding more than 60 farmer training courses and training more than 5,000 farmers. He also served as the technical consultant for Dingxi Potato Project, Weiyuan, Tongwei potato industry, Lintao Tengsheng and Sanjiang potato enterprises, providing technical services for farmers to increase production and income.
