Its predecessor can be traced back to Hangzhou Hydropower School in 1953, Hangzhou Water Conservancy School in 1956 and Zhejiang Electric Power College in 1958. It has experienced the development stages of Zhejiang Water Conservancy and Electric Power School, Zhejiang Water Conservancy and Hydropower School, Zhejiang Water Conservancy and Hydropower College and Zhejiang Water Conservancy and Hydropower College.

20 13 school was renamed as Zhejiang institute of water resources and hydropower, and 20 14 was approved by Zhejiang provincial people's government and Ministry of water resources. In 20 17, it was approved as a bachelor's degree awarding unit, in 20 19, it was listed as a pilot demonstration college for application-oriented construction in Zhejiang province, and in 2020, it was listed as a component unit of the key supervision talent training base of the Ministry of Water Resources (there are only three universities in China).
