Personal experience

Yu Baoxiang worked in Shanghai for four years in his early years, during which he had many contacts with famous scholars in Shanghai. Calligraphy and painting attainments have been studied by Shen Helu and benefited from many teachers, so I have no opinion. At the end of 1950s, he was wronged by the anti-rightist movement and was forced to return to Zhejiang. After that, he was trapped in the countryside for 20 years. During this period, he lived at home as a farmer, almost isolated from Momo. It was not until the late 1970s that he was rehabilitated and demobilized, so he got married again. Since then, I have devoted myself to professional painting and calligraphy, which can be said to be immersed in painting and calligraphy for decades.

Yu Baoxiang is good at landscapes, figures and flowers and birds. His style is far from the brushwork of the sage Chen Laolian (Hong Mao). His creativity pays equal attention to God and form, learns from others, learns from the hearts of the ancients, and then learns from nature. Its style is beautiful and luxurious, its pen and ink are concise and implicit, and its poems and books blend in one furnace, freehand brushwork is unrestrained and magnificent.

His landscape is a blend of ancient and modern, with bold brushwork, majestic figure, dense water clouds, strange composition and colorful weather, which has won the attention of Shao Yan. The characters' works are exquisite and beautiful. He is good at flowers and birds, swimming in fish and animals, and doing his best to rise and fall. Intercropping animals and birds is also quite enjoyable.

Mr. Yu's pursuit of inner beauty, attention to true colors, lonely pursuit of youth and conscious pursuit of academic pursuit undoubtedly laid the foundation for his later diligence and sublimation. This is also reflected in his disdain for impetuous and pretentious style, so he clearly grasped the value orientation of the dialectical relationship between inheritance and innovation. People often say: "Painting needs to respect tradition, especially basic skills such as techniques and laws, and should strive to be solid and skillful. Sketching and copying must be accurate. This will be handy and easy to use. " Looking at his works today, we can see that his temperament is perfect, his mind is resourceful, he comes out of the loom, and his ideology and artistry are perfectly unified.

Mr. Yu Baoxiang also has profound attainments in the field of calligraphy. He studied calligraphy diligently since childhood, and studied in Tang Kai and Qin Zhuan successively. He took the "two kings" as his ancestor and thought that "learning books is in the law and beauty lies in people". Regular script is solemn and neat, worships Wei and Jin dynasties, and running script refers to "two kings". The brushwork is vigorous and old, ups and downs, but unique, clean, not arrogant and not angry; The book list is vigorous, graceful and simple, but not arrogant and fierce, with far-reaching style and outstanding dust; Zhuan Xu's various bodies have also been nourished by Piaomao, leaving only charm.

Mr. Yu's seal cutting was studied by "Zhejiang School" in his early days, and he caught a glimpse of "Huizhou School". He used books as seal characters, vigorous pen, simple temperament, no affectation, bold style, safe layout and patchwork.

As the ancients said, "If a person's painting and calligraphy are lofty, if his character is high, then his character is high. There are four methods: one is to clear the mind to eliminate vulgarity, the other is to be good at reading with a mirror, the third is to praise early and be far away, and the fourth is elegant. " With these four things, the grid is not high but high. This is teacher Yu's direction.
