Should calligraphy be written in Yan style or European style?
Jing Long Xuan has devoted himself to calligraphy teaching for many years. He believes that what kind of template beginners choose should first consider the students' own interest trend, which is the most critical factor to determine whether students can guarantee their passion for learning for a long time.

For beginners, choosing to start learning from regular script should be the choice of most people. Regular script has been pushed by most calligraphers as the basis of all calligraphy styles. The so-called "regular script is like standing, walking like walking, grass like running" is the truth. The most respected model of regular script is "four masters of regular script": Yan Liu Ou Zhao. Probably because Liu Kai is relatively more difficult to master, and Zhao Mengfu's regular script is considered superficial and kitsch for beginners, and is generally less used as a model for beginners to get started. The rest is the color body and the European body.

Yan style and European style can basically represent the peak level of regular script, and the artistic level is indistinguishable, but the calligraphy style is quite different. Yan's body is broad, thick and heavy, and quite imposing; Ou Kai is also cautious, square and exquisite.

Generally speaking, practicing facial expressions is easier and more effective. Because the face is suitable for writing in block letters, and the strokes and structural features are outstanding, beginners can write some flavors in a short time as long as they copy with their heart. Ou Kai has a rigorous structure, which makes it difficult for beginners to get started.

Nowadays, many calligraphy lovers prefer Ou Kai, a large part of which is influenced by Tian Kai. Although the Tian brothers are recognized masters in today's book world, in fact, their regular script is only a rigorous and general style, and too many dangerous structures, running scripts and official scripts have been standardized, which is far from the original. Therefore, it is more appropriate to call it Tian Kai.

Long Xuan thinks that both Ou Kai and Yan Jie are classic calligraphy posts handed down from generation to generation, and there is no problem from the point of "taking law as the priority". But we must say which font is more suitable for beginners to practice, or it depends on the students' own aesthetic habits. Beginners should find the template that they are most interested in (as long as it is a recognized classic law post, not limited to the four masters of regular script) and refer to the opinions of the instructor. Don't follow the trend, listen to other people's suggestions and force yourself to learn examples that you are not interested in. It is difficult to ensure lasting interest in learning, and the learning effect is often half the effort.

Compared with Zhao Xue's calligraphy, there is no difference from official script and running script. Although Tian Kai's artistic level is controversial, if students especially like his standard and beautiful writing effect, it is still an option to be an entry-level model.

After all, interest is the best teacher
