Guilin institute of tourism was founded in 1985, formerly known as guilin institute of tourism. 1994 was renamed Guilin Tourism College; In 20 15, it was upgraded to guilin institute of tourism, offering 4 undergraduate majors and 42 specialist majors. It is one of the earliest independent full-time public tourism colleges in China.

As of August 20 15, the school has two campuses, Luluan and Yanshan, with a total area of1250,000 square meters (1885 mu) and more than 9,000 full-time students. The school is a key supporting unit of the United Nations World Tourism Organization and affiliated member of its Education Committee, an educational member of the Asia-Pacific Tourism Association, a China-ASEAN tourism talent education and training base, and a "five-star alliance" school-running institution of China tourism colleges.
