As early as 1960s, Professor Rao Shucheng from the Department of Orthopaedics and Spinal Surgery of West China Hospital started the surgical treatment of spinal deformity and occipital-cervical deformity, and in 1980s, he started the anterior spinal surgery.
After more than 40 years of development, the major of spinal surgery has become the western spinal surgery center with strong technical force, important influence and high academic status in China. At present, the center has two professors, Song Yueming and Liu Hao, and four associate professors. All members of the center have received formal training in famous spine surgery centers in Europe and America. Since 1980s, spinal surgery has taken the lead in treating spinal fracture with paraplegia, spinal tuberculosis and spinal tumor with self-developed spinal nail in China, and has treated more than 2,000 patients, which not only makes the surgical treatment of central spinal tuberculosis, fracture and dislocation at the leading level in China, but also promotes the development of spinal surgery in western China.
At the same time, the center has accumulated rich experience in surgical treatment of upper cervical diseases, and the incidence of complications is lower than the average level reported in China, which has achieved good treatment results.
In addition, the center is also at the leading level in the treatment of rigid scoliosis, congenital scoliosis, artificial intervertebral replacement of cervical vertebrae and degenerative diseases of lower lumbar spine in China.
