Teresa Teng made three TV feature films in Hongkong (1977, 1978, 1982), in which the dialogues were all in Cantonese. Comparing the pronunciation before and after, we can see that her Cantonese level has changed rapidly in just five or six years. In 1977 and 1978, the speech speed was generally slow, and people who spoke Mandarin would make some common mistakes when learning Cantonese, such as -m endings (words "Qin" and "Patent") and some compound vowels (such as "Dai", "Li" and "Left"). In terms of tone, the tone pattern fluctuates gently, which doesn't sound like the high and low impact of standard Cantonese. For example, when the northern Wu dialect is compared internally, it is generally said that Suzhou dialect and Shanghai dialect are "soft words of Wu Nong" and Ningbo dialect is "as hard as a thief". Personally, I think that standard Cantonese is harder than Ningbo dialect, but no one will judge Cantonese by the "soft and hard" in Wu dialect because of the different dialects. If the standard of Wu dialect is applied, Teresa Teng's Cantonese accent is very, very "soft" compared with the standard Cantonese.
