Identification method of rosewood

The identification methods of rosewood can be divided into the following six types: 1, depending on the distribution of pores on the cross section; 2. Look at the growth ring; 3. Look at the color of the board; 4, smell the aroma; 5. Look at the phenomenon of density and alcohol oxidation; 6. See if it is painted.

First, look at the distribution of tube holes on the cross section.

If it is sandalwood rosewood, the diameter of the inner copy pipe hole in growth ring is slightly equal and the distribution is more uniform; The cross section can be cut with a sharp knife, and it is best not to retract the knife. When you look at it, you can apply some water, and it is best to observe it with a magnifying glass more than ten times.

Second, look at the growth ring.

Observe the growth rings on the cross section. If the sandalwood rosewood is not obvious, you can pay attention to others and draw a conclusion by synthesizing various kinds.

Third, look at the color of the board.

If it is sandalwood rosewood, the new section is orange-red, and it is dark purple or dark purple for a long time, often with light color and purple-black stripes. After the rosewood is scraped with a knife, the inner layer is reddish brown, which is more obvious than the purple brown of the epidermis. After a period of time, the cut part will gradually turn purple-brown like the epidermis due to oxidation.

Fourth, smell the aroma.

If sandalwood rosewood rubs against an object, it will have a very weak fragrance (like sandalwood, but it is not the same as the incense we smell in our daily life), and it will be very fragrant when filing with a file or sawing with a table.

Five, look at the density and alcohol oxidation phenomenon

Generally, the density of wood is less than that of water, but the density of rosewood is greater than that of water, so it will sink in water. Wipe the surface of rosewood with strong alcohol, and the alcohol will turn brown-red, and the more you wipe it, the stronger the color will be. The polished surface will soon be oxidized to purple-brown.

Sixth, see if it is painted.

The color of the crafts carved by rosewood is the natural color of rosewood oxidation, so there is no need to color, just polish and wax with cowhide. If you encounter painted rosewood items, most of them are fakes.
