What is Outward Bound and its origin and development?
Outward bound training, or outdoor experiential training, originated in World War II. At that time, German submarines often violently attacked the British Atlantic commercial fleet and some warships at sea, causing many ships to sink and a large number of crew members to fall into the water. Due to the cold sea and being far away from the mainland, most of the crew were killed unfortunately, and only a few people survived after a long ordeal. Can you imagine what kind of people might survive in this dangerous situation, and do they need it?

No matter you or I have no experience of being killed at sea, we can only guess and infer, but what conditions and qualities are needed to survive? Nobody even knew at that time. When people learned about the situation of these survivors, they found a very surprising fact, that is, they saw that these survivors were not all strong boys as people thought, but most of them were old and weak, so people were very surprised. Why didn't they survive? On the contrary, they are such people? At that time, in Britain, many people wanted to find out the answer to this question, including some experts in the British military who specialized in lifesaving. This problem was very important at that time, because saving a large number of soldiers from the sea was a positive contribution to the war. Later, after a period of investigation and careful analysis of these survivors by experts, the answer to this question was finally found. Experts believe that the key to the survival of people with poor physical conditions like them is that they have very good psychological quality, that is, when these people encounter such disasters, their first thought is: I must live and have a strong desire to survive. Moreover, they firmly believe that there are no insurmountable difficulties in the world, and then rely on a lot of experience accumulated in their years of life to come up with and find various ways to survive, so these people can survive. When those young sailors encounter this kind of disaster, they may think more: I may be finished now. The sea is so cold and so far away from the land, I will die here this time and never go home again. In other words, they first lost hope of survival. The psychological defense line collapsed, followed by the termination of intellectual activities and the rapid decline of physical fitness, and soon died at the bottom of the sea.

After figuring out the answer to this question, many people in Britain were wondering at that time, since the psychological quality of young seafarers has not been good enough for so many years, can we find a way to solve this problem? At that time, there was an educator named Kurt Hann in England. In his educational thought, he insists that all people in society have a good side in their hearts. As long as we find appropriate means and methods, we can guide people's hearts to be good. So when he faced this problem, he was also an opinion. He said that the fundamental reason for the poor psychological quality of so many young seafarers is that we have no means and methods to cultivate their good psychological quality. To change the status quo, we can only train them. However, because Hann himself is German, he has no financial resources, and his idea has not been realized for a long time, but Hann persevered and finally persuaded one of his good friends to call Lawrence. After listening to Hann's idea, Lawrence thought it was feasible, so he worked hard and traveled in many ways. Finally, in 1942, he was in Adebayor, a small port city in England. Using the natural environment and some artificial facilities, this school specially designed many training subjects with psychological challenges, and let some young seafarers do these activities to train and improve their psychological quality in this way. At the same time, it also taught them some skills and techniques for survival at sea and in the wild. Lawrence became the first principal of this school. It should be said that this school is the embryonic form of outdoor experiential training (outward bound training), which means that today's outdoor experiential training and outward bound training are all from the war.
