The Convention was opened for signature on 1 June 1993, and came into force on1June 1997. According to the Convention, all States parties shall destroy all chemical weapons and related facilities by April 29th, 20 12 at the latest. The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) aims to achieve the aims and objectives of the Chemical Weapons Convention and ensure the implementation of its provisions. It holds a meeting of States parties every year to discuss important issues and make decisions.

On April 5th, China ratified the Chemical Weapons Convention and became the original signatory of the Convention.
