Deng Guisen-Scientific Achievements

Establishing Horticulture Department of Agricultural College of Wuhan University

1948 In May, Deng Guisen was employed as a professor and head of the Department of Horticulture, Agricultural College of Wuhan University. At that time, the department just started to organize, only 1 teaching assistant. Deng Guisen devoted himself to the work of the department. Draw up a teaching plan first and enroll students in July of that year. Secondly, looking for teachers, we hired famous gardening experts, such as Zhang Huizhi, Zhang Wencai and Chen Junyu, to teach in our school. At the same time, four young teachers are hired to assist in the work, so that various professional courses in the department can be opened in time. Third, purchase teaching equipment, strive for food processing equipment provided by the United States, and establish horticultural product processing laboratories and fruit and vegetable laboratories. The fourth is the construction of teaching base. In Wuhan University Farm, orchards, vegetable gardens and flower nurseries have been restored and developed, technicians have been appointed, and management has been strengthened to meet the needs of students' internship. After more than two years' efforts, the preparatory work for the Department of Horticulture has been preliminarily announced. 1950 in the second half of the year, after Zhang Wencai arrived at the department, Deng Guisen resigned as acting dean and was replaced by Zhang Wencai. With the sponsorship of Zhang Wencai, the Horticultural Department has made new progress. After 1956, Deng Guisen has been concurrently the deputy director of the horticulture department, assisting the department heads in grasping the equipment and management. The fruit tree specialty of Horticulture Department was approved as a national key discipline in the late 1980s, which was inseparable from Deng Guisen's early work for Horticulture Department.

One of the pioneers of food canning in China.

The development of canned food abroad has a history of more than 80 years. It was introduced to China late. Before the founding of the People's Republic of China, only a few coastal cities had some canned food factories with poor equipment. Due to the dumping of foreign canned goods, it is on the verge of bankruptcy. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, canned food production gradually recovered and developed, and some products were exported. However, there are very few books and publications on canned science, which can't meet the theoretical and technical requirements of canned production.

Deng Guisen 1945 studied in the United States, specializing in food processing. After returning to China, he taught the processing of fruit and vegetable products at the university. Combined with his own teaching work, 10 devoted himself to the research of canned food for many years. 1957 wrote a book, Canned Food, which was published by Light Industry Press in 1960. This book summarizes the experience of canned food production in China, introduces the theory and technology of canned food production in Europe, America and the former Soviet Union, and systematically introduces the basic theory, mechanical equipment, operation methods and basic inspection methods of each process of canned food storage. It was the first monograph on canning in China, which met the needs of food processing, production, teaching and scientific research at that time, raised the theoretical and technical level of canned food storage in China to a new height, and promoted the development of canned food production in China. Even with the rapid development of canned food today, this book is still an important reference book for teaching and scientific research.

Cultivate a large number of food processing technical personnel

1947- 1948, Deng Guisen held two training courses for food processing technicians in Shanghai, each with about 40 people and training for three months, which was the earliest food processing training course in China.

From May, 65438 to May, 0948, Deng Guisen taught in the Horticulture Department of Wuhan University, and taught the course of horticultural product processing all the time, and established the specialty of horticultural product processing in the department, which trained a group of early high-level professionals in food processing for China.

During the period of 1953, Deng Guisen held a training course on the storage and processing of agricultural products in Huazhong Agricultural College to learn and apply the textbook "Storage and Processing of Agricultural Products" of the former Soviet Union, which played an important role in improving the teachers' level and teaching level at that time.

After the "Cultural Revolution", Deng Guisen was the editor-in-chief of the textbook "Vegetable Storage and Processing in National Agricultural Colleges" in 1978, and participated in the compilation of important chapters of "Fruit Storage and Processing". Both books were published around 198 1, and were published again after 1990. Deng Guisen taught as an undergraduate and worked as a tutor for master students, and trained many graduate students in food processing for China.
