Xiamen University was founded in 192 1 by patriotic overseas Chinese leaders. It is the first university founded by overseas Chinese in the history of modern education in China, and one of the earliest universities in China to recruit graduate students. The establishment of Xiamen University Malaysian Branch became the first university in China to build an independent campus overseas. Its early buildings have been selected as national key cultural relics protection units and the first batch of China 20th century architectural heritage list, and are known as southern powers.
By April 2023, the school had established Siming Campus, Zhangzhou Campus, Xiang 'an Campus and Malaysia Branch, with graduate schools, 6 departments, 34 colleges and 17 research institutes. The school has nearly 3,000 full-time teachers and more than 45,000 students, including 265,438 undergraduates and 65,438 postgraduates.

20 17 March, the second world ballet competition was held in Tokyo, Japan, with 124 contestants from all over the world participating. Li Na, an associate professor of Xiamen University, and her student Ou Rui participated in the competition on behalf of Xiamen University. Ou Rui won the gold medal in the adult group of modern ballet with his original solo "Germination".
