Self-awareness refers to the individual's understanding, experience and monitoring of himself and the relationship with the people around him. The awakening of self-awareness is an important psychological change with the arrival of adolescence. First, correctly handle the contradiction between the real self and the ideal self.

The true self is the individual's understanding and evaluation of the current self-condition, and the ideal self is the self-condition that the individual expects to achieve. The gap between them is not only the driving force of individual progress and perfection, but also an important source of teenagers' troubles. College students are a group with a high level of ambition. It is difficult to make up the gap between the real self and the ideal self in a short time, which leads some college students to feel inferior and blame themselves, or indulge in illusory self-confidence that is difficult to do things realistically. To reasonably solve the contradiction between the real self and the ideal self, according to the different situations of students, the following three possible adjustment strategies can be adopted:

(A) efforts to improve the true self, so that it gradually approaches the ideal self.

This is the most active and difficult coordination strategy, which requires students to establish an achievable ideal self based on their objective understanding of the true self, and turn it into an operational goal, and strive to improve the true self through tenacious will.

(B) basically give up the ideal self and accommodate the realistic self.

We must objectively see that there are huge individual differences among college students, some of whom have neither extraordinary talent nor other outstanding advantages. Influenced by the higher ideal self of the whole college students, the contradiction between their real self and their ideal self is more prominent, and it is difficult to achieve their ideal self due to their own limitations. Second, show the contradiction between self and closed self.

At the same time, the contradiction between self-presentation and closed self is also prominent: successful personal presentation can make college students gain personal confidence and self-worth in the appreciation of others, but setbacks and failures in the presentation may also hurt self-esteem and self-confidence; However, self-isolation, seclusion, obscurity, sense of self-security, loneliness and self-worthlessness often plague college students who try to close themselves off. Third, establish an independent and confident self and get rid of the troubles of growing up.

To fundamentally solve the contradiction between the real self and the ideal self and show the conflict between the self and the closed self, we need to get rid of the external dependence in the process of self-formation and establish an independent and confident self.

(A) independent of the evaluation of others, accept the reality of self.

College students often regard other people's evaluation as their own standard, and the self-uncertainty caused by paying too much attention to whether they meet other people's evaluation standards is an important source of trouble. The most important feature of a healthy and mature self is that it is independent of other people's evaluation, can complete the objective evaluation and understanding of the true self based on personal experience, and accept the self frankly. They often feel that their behavior does not conform to the image of college students, which leads to self-blame and guilt. To get rid of this problem, college students need to learn to compromise flexibly between social requirements and personal abilities, accept certain aspects of their personality that are not appreciated and affirmed by society, foster strengths and avoid weaknesses, and do not force themselves to yield to social pressure. We should realize that a mature and independent self should be flexible and adaptable without hindering society and others, and a person does not need to be recognized and appreciated by all sectors of society.
