Mainly engaged in the study of environmental changes in arid and semi-arid areas, and established a stable geoscience research group with international competitiveness in Lanzhou University. The research work on loess strata and loess climatology in western China, rapid climate change in late Quaternary, Holocene drought events, lake evolution in arid areas, and humidity change in westerlies has been carried out successively. Outstanding achievements include: 1) The loess strata, loess deposition age and climate records in the western part of the Loess Plateau are systematically studied, and the loess-paleosol sequence suitable for regional comparison is established based on the typical Jiuzhoutai loess profile in western Lanzhou, which makes an important contribution to the improvement of the orbital scale climate multicycle theory; 2) Study on the rapid climate change of the last glacial cycle glacial/interglacial state. It was put forward earlier that there was a rapid change in the winter and summer monsoon of the last glacial in China, but it had regional characteristics, and the rapid climate change range was between the north and south poles; It is found that the Holocene climate in the monsoon fringe area of China also experienced rapid climate changes on the scale of thousands to hundreds of years, which showed many major drought events and had global connections. It is found that the warm monsoon climate in the last interglacial period is relatively stable, and there is no rapid climate change reported abroad, which is also confirmed by the later research results at home and abroad. The research results have great influence in international academic circles; 3) It is found that the change pattern of humidity (precipitation) in the inland arid area of Central Asia, which is significantly affected by westerly circulation, is significantly different from that in monsoon climate, and a new viewpoint of "westerly pattern" of Holocene climate change on different time scales is put forward; 4) The evolution history of inland lakes and deserts in the central desert area of China in the late Quaternary was studied, and it was found that there was an ancient great lake named "Jilantai-Hetao" in the late Quaternary Hetao Plain.
