The Basic Scientific Indicators Database (ESI) is an analytical database established by Clarivate Analytics (formerly Thomson Reuters Intellectual Property and Technology Department) on the basis of collecting and analyzing the academic literature and cited references in the core collection of Science Net.
ESI is a basic analysis and evaluation tool introduced by institute for scientific information (ISI) in 20001year to measure the performance of scientific research and track the development trend of science. It has become an important evaluation index tool to evaluate the international academic level and influence of universities, academic institutions and countries/regions around the world.
ESI consists of citation ranking, most cited papers, citation analysis and comments. ESI divides all sciences into 22 professional fields from the perspective of citation analysis, and makes statistical analysis and ranking on countries, research institutions, journals, papers and scientists respectively. The data is updated 6 times a year, and the update period is 2 months.
