Development history of optical fiber
1880-Alexandra Graham Bell invents optical fiber for beam communication.

1960-the invention of electricity and optical fiber.

1960- the transmission loss of glass fiber is greater than 1000dB/km, and other materials include aperture waveguide, gas lens waveguide and hollow metal waveguide.

From June 65438 to July 0966, Dr. Gao Kun, a British and Chinese scholar, published a paper entitled "Dielectric fiber surface waveguide with optical frequency" in PIEE magazine, which theoretically proved the possibility of using optical fiber as transmission medium to realize optical communication and predicted the possibility of manufacturing ultra-low loss optical fiber for communication.

1970- Caplong and Keck, three researchers from Corning Company in the United States, successfully developed a low-loss optical fiber with a transmission loss of only 20dB/km by improved chemical vapor deposition (MCVD).

1970- Bell Laboratories developed the world's first GaAs- Al semiconductor laser operating at room temperature.

1972- transmission loss reduced to 4dB/km.

1973- Wuhan Institute of Posts and Telecommunications, Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, China, began to study optical fiber communication.

1974- Bell Research Institute of the United States invented a low-loss optical fiber manufacturing method-CVD method (vapor deposition method), which reduced the transmission loss of optical fiber to 1. 1dB/km.

1976-the world's first optical fiber communication system test line was opened for the underground pipeline of Atlanta Bell Laboratory.

Using 144 fiber optic cable, the signal is transmitted at the rate of 44.736Mbps, and the relay distance is 10 km.

Multi-mode fiber is used, and infrared light with wavelength of 0.85 micron is used as the light source.

1976- transmission loss reduced to 0.5dB/km.

1977- Bell Research Institute and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation have successfully developed semiconductor lasers with a lifetime of 10,000,000 hours (in practice, it is about10 year).

1977-the world's first optical fiber communication system was put into commercial use in Chicago, USA, with a speed of 45 MB/s.

1977- First practical installation of telephone optical fiber network.

1978-FORT installed optical fiber power for the first time in France.

1979—— Zhao Zisen drew the first practical optical fiber independently developed in China, and was known as "the father of optical fiber in China".

1979- transmission loss reduced to 0.2dB/km.

1980- commercial use of multimode optical fiber communication system (140Mb/s), and field test of single-mode optical fiber communication system began.

1982-key scientific research project of China Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications .82 Project opened in Wuhan.

1990- single-mode optical fiber communication system has entered the commercial stage (565Mb/s), and the field tests of zero dispersion-shifted optical fiber, wavelength division multiplexing and coherent communication have been carried out, and the technical standards of digital synchronization system (SDH) have been formulated one after another.

1990- the transmission loss is reduced to 0. 14dB/km, which is close to the theoretical attenuation limit of optical fiber.

1990- Optical fiber for LAN and other short-distance transmission applications.

1992- Bell Laboratories and Japanese partners have successfully tested an optical amplifier that can transmit 9000 kilometers without errors. Its initial speed is 5Gbps, and then it is increased to 10Gbps.

1993-SDH products began to be commercialized (below 622Mb/s).

1995-2.5Gb/s SDH products have entered the commercial stage.

SDH products of 1996- 10Gb/s have entered the commercial stage.

1997—— 20Gb/s and 40Gb/s SDH products using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) have made great breakthroughs.

1999- Qingdao to Dalian took the lead in opening the domestic 8×2.5Gb/sWDM system, and Shenyang to Dalian opened the 32×2.5Gb/sWDM optical fiber communication system.

2000-FTTH = > FTTH.

2005-Shanghai to Hangzhou opened a 3.2Tbps ultra-large capacity optical fiber communication system.

In 2005, FTTH (Fiber to the Home) fiber directly to the home.

In 20 12 years, China's optical fiber production capacity has reached1200,000 core kilometers, and it is expected to reach1800,000 core kilometers in 20 13 years.
