abstract
This paper mainly discusses the politeness principle in communication. As we all know, different people have different views on politeness. Sometimes, what China people think is polite may not be true in western culture. This paper attempts to clarify some important differences in politeness between Chinese and western cultures. Politeness principle is influenced by different cultures. Can't be universal. Politeness is a pragmatic phenomenon, which exists in any language group as a social phenomenon and a universal phenomenon. The universality of politeness principle is influenced by register and culture. The politeness principle used in the western world is different from that in China. As the politeness principle was put forward in the western historical background, its usefulness in China culture needs more research. In the western world, politeness pays attention to equality and cooperation between people. In China, politeness has four basic elements: respect, modesty, attitude and elegance.

This paper mainly studies the application of politeness principle in communication. As we all know, people in different regions have different views on politeness. Sometimes people in China think it is polite, but it may not be in the eyes of westerners. This paper aims to find out the important etiquette differences between Chinese and western cultures. The politeness principle in a region is influenced by its culture and is not universally applicable. Etiquette is a group phenomenon, which exists in any same language group and social class. A common feature of politeness principle is that it is influenced by culture. Due to the historical background of the West, the application of politeness principle in the West is different from that in China. Whether it is beneficial to China culture to some extent needs further study. In the western world, politeness is based on equality and cooperation between people. In China, politeness has four basic elements: respect, humility, attitude and elegance.
