During the period of 1936, on the one hand, Zheng Huachi taught at Peking University, on the other hand, he still insisted on scientific research. He cooperated with Xue, his assistant, and carried out the application research of Raman effect on isotopes, which was the first in the world at that time. They overcame the difficulties of lack of funds and simple instruments. After hundreds of hours of photography, they finally found a weak companion line near the strong spectral line of benzene, and then measured the intensity ratio of these two spectral lines, and further established an approximate theoretical estimate of isotope movement, which proved theoretically that isotope movement was caused by a carbon atom on the benzene ring being replaced by an isotope with an atomic weight of 13. When this work was introduced to N Bohr, who visited China in 1937, he was very surprised and thought it was quite remarkable that he could complete such a difficult and complicated work under such harsh conditions. Later, they wrote a paper entitled "Raman Spectrum and Isotope Effect of Benzene", which was published in the American Journal of Chemical Physics, No.65438-0938. At the end of 1938, Indians also published similar articles, in which the recorded experimental results were basically consistent with those published by Zheng Huachi and others at the beginning of the year, which proved the correctness of Zheng Huachi and others' work and was recognized by the international scientific community. After returning to China from 65438 to 0935, Zheng Huachi has been teaching in colleges and universities for more than 50 years. He is diligent and conscientious, and has made contributions to the cultivation of a new generation of scientific and technological talents in China.
As early as during his study in Germany, Zheng Huachi noticed that he attached importance to the important role of education in Germany's economic and technological development. After returning to China, he tried to adopt the German teaching method in Peking University, which was supported and encouraged by Rao Yutai. Later, Zheng Huachi attached great importance to integrating theory with practice in his lectures and strengthened intuitive teaching. He advocates and strengthens demonstration experiments, often making his own electrical and optical instruments, making his own slides and making demonstrations in his own designed and built lecture hall. At that time, he taught optics, heat and general physics, and the teaching effect was very good.
When teaching at Beijing Normal University, Zheng Huachi taught atomic physics, general physics and other courses, which fully reflected his style of study and characteristics: he attached importance to demonstration experiments, for example, when teaching atomic physics, he asked and instructed teaching assistants to observe particle tracks in Wilson Cloud Room and show them to students, making the originally boring and difficult courses intuitive and easy to understand, which was well received by students; Not only teaching the text itself, but also citing a large number of physical historical materials in combination with the text, so that students can understand the development of physics and better accept and master new physical ideas and concepts; Introduce the frontier and development trend of science in time, so as to expand students' knowledge, inspire people and help students choose the direction of scientific research. The research on low-temperature physics, superconductivity and solid-state physics by the Physics Department of Beijing Normal University is closely related to Professor Zheng's introduction of superconductivity and superfluidity in advance.
From 65438 to 0954, Zheng Huachi founded a general physics research class in Beijing Normal University. In order to improve the conditions of running a school and improve the quality of teaching, he became a class teacher and taught in person, and devoted a lot of energy to this. Later, many graduate students in spectroscopy were recruited and qualified graduate students were recommended to go abroad for further study. Most of his students have become experts and professors, and some have become doctoral supervisors and university presidents. This is inseparable from Zheng Huachi's efforts on the education front.
Zheng Huachi not only carefully trains students, but also cares about the professional growth of young and middle-aged teachers. Proficient in German, French, English and other languages, and often read magazines in various languages. He also asked young teachers, especially his teaching assistants, to learn foreign languages well and be proficient in reading foreign language materials. Sometimes, he also designated some foreign magazines as the required reading books for young teachers, and personally discussed with them. When he was teaching at Beijing Normal University, Zheng Huachi gave lectures to teachers and students of physics department for many times, introducing scientific and technological trends, learning methods and physics history, which was of great help to young teachers. After Zheng Huachi retired, young teachers often visited his home or asked for advice. He always warmly receives them, guides them to consult foreign materials and puts forward his own opinions and suggestions on determining the direction of scientific research. His student Ma Benkun recalled: "Teacher Zheng is very concerned about the growth of young teachers. It can be said that he has always cared about us, even if he didn't ask. " He also recalled that after he graduated from the research class, Zheng Huachi actively introduced and recommended him to the theoretical physics laboratory of the Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, enabling him to engage in scientific research independently and make many talented colleagues. Ma Benkun, Ph.D. Supervisor, Department of Physics, Beijing Normal University.
In order to revitalize science in China, Zheng Huachi hopes that more people will learn and love science. He often publishes popular articles in his spare time. As early as 1947, Tianjin Ta Kung Pao published an article entitled Atomic Spectrum and Molecular Spectrum to introduce advanced scientific knowledge to readers. He also published articles such as In Memory of Professor Planck and Joseph Deng Yijun Musen to introduce the thoughts and methods of famous physicists to young readers. In addition, he is also very concerned about the cause of middle school education and has done a lot of guidance for the formulation of middle school physics syllabus in China in the early days of liberation.
Zheng Huachi is an excellent patriotic intellectual. As early as 1946, he and 47 professors from Peking University jointly wrote a letter of protest to the US ambassador to China, strongly condemning the brutal atrocities committed by the US military against female students studying in China. 1948, he and more than 0/00 professors from universities and colleges in Beiping jointly issued a declaration, calling for an end to the destruction of cultural institutions and famous cities in view of the indiscriminate bombing of Kaifeng by American and Chiang Kai-shek planes. During the Cultural Revolution, Zheng Huachi was treated unfairly. He can focus on the overall situation of the country and the nation, and his patriotism has never wavered.
Zheng Huachi devoted his life to the research and education of China spectroscopy. He always gives silently and doesn't ask for anything from society. He left an entrustment before his death, and after his death, the funeral was simple, and no memorial service or farewell ceremony was held. The school respects and handles affairs according to his entrustment. To commemorate this moment, a commemorative book named "Deeply miss Professor Zheng Huachi" was published. Zheng Huachi's noble moral quality and academic contribution deserve to be respected and studied by future generations.
