Brief introduction of all departments of Suzhou University School of Foreign Languages
The Translation Department of the School of Foreign Languages of Soochow University was established in March 2004, and its predecessor was English Department II (Practical English Department). The establishment of translation department is the need of the development of social situation and the product of foreign language teaching reform. This move will play a positive role in promoting the discipline development and curriculum reform of the School of Foreign Languages.

Courses are mainly divided into three groups: translation, business and tourism. Courses offered include translation theory, English-Chinese/Chinese-English translation, interpretation, simultaneous interpretation, conference interpretation, news translation, classics translation and literary translation. Russian language and literature major was founded in 1952, which is the oldest major in existing foreign language colleges. It was once closed during the Cultural Revolution, and 1972 resumed enrollment. 1997 was the first among domestic peers to change to a five-year Russian-English bilingual major. 1998 awarded a master's degree and began to recruit graduate students the following year. For more than half a century, Russian majors have trained hundreds of outstanding Russian language, culture and literature talents for the society.

The Russian-English bilingual education implemented in the undergraduate stage is a successful attempt of foreign language+foreign language compound quality education in the new era, aiming at cultivating bilingual talents who are urgently needed by society and can engage in teaching, foreign trade, foreign affairs and tourism. Because this new major started earlier, accumulated some experience, and implemented bilingual training mode, the comprehensive quality of students has been greatly improved compared with the previous monolingual teaching, graduates have been widely praised and welcomed by employers, and the employment rate and postgraduate entrance examination rate are obviously better than other majors. In 2009, the School of Foreign Languages of Suzhou University was officially approved to set up a major in German language and literature, and in the same year, it began to recruit undergraduates majoring in German. This major focuses on the teaching of language and literature. The main courses offered are: basic German, advanced German, German audio-visual speaking, spoken German, German newspaper reading, economic and trade German, Hankou German translation, German writing, cross-cultural communication, English as a second language, business English, international trade theory and practice, aiming at cultivating bilingual compound talents.

The German major lasts for four years. The goal of this major is to enable graduates to master the German language foundation and listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation skills comprehensively and solidly, and to cultivate strong translation ability in Dehankou, so that graduates can be competent to engage in German-related foreign affairs or translation work in foreign-related economic and trade departments, foreign-related enterprises, scientific research institutes and government agencies.
