brief Introduction of the content

For a long time, in the field of domestic art research, the basic theory research of art is relatively backward and weak. Especially in recent decades, China's fine arts have developed very rapidly, and many new phenomena and problems need to be solved theoretically. In the active thoughts of artists and art researchers, there are many puzzles, confusions and even confusions. The construction of basic theory of fine arts is particularly urgent and important.

The author of this book has been engaged in the study of art history for a long time, presided over a number of national key scientific research projects in art, and also edited art periodicals, mastering the frontier trends of art research. Since 1993, he has been guiding doctoral students and has made in-depth research on art teaching in the fine arts department of colleges and universities. This book is a monograph that comprehensively and systematically expounds the characteristics, essence, form, occurrence, development, creation, appreciation and dissemination of art.

In order to adapt to the use of college textbooks, we should strive to be concise and easy to read in style and writing, and try to avoid triviality and dryness. On the basis of ensuring to adapt to the reading content of art practitioners, the theoretical content should be appropriately increased to meet the readers engaged in art history research and other art and cultural research. Among them, "art criticism", "art history" and "methodology" which are not set in the general introduction are all elaborated in this book.

Chapter 1 What is art?

What is art?

A seemingly simple question actually involves very professional knowledge. It is not easy to give an accurate and in-depth answer. In this book, we will briefly explain the basic knowledge of art, the basic theory of art and all aspects of artistic tenses, dating back to ancient times and today, and the discussion will begin here. This chapter expounds the definition, meaning, characteristics and essence of art.

Section 1 Definition of Art

Let's first study the origin of the word "art". As a concept, it has gone through quite a long time. After it was introduced into China from abroad, it continuously collected and concentrated its reference materials until it became an "art" with current significance. In addition, we should also understand the same concepts related to the meaning of "art".

First, the origin of the word "art"

The word "art" was introduced into China from the west at the beginning of last century. At that time, Cai Yuanpei, the education chief of the government of the Republic of China and the president of Peking University, frequently used the word "art" in his speeches and articles. But his so-called "art" includes not only "architecture, sculpture and pictures", but also poetry and music, and its meaning is similar to what we call "art" today. In the west, there is no strict distinction between "art" (Italian: arte, German: kunst, French: art) and "art". In Latin, "art" is used for both artistic interpretation and artistic interpretation. It originated from the Latin "ars" in ancient Rome. When the ancient Romans used "ars" at that time, it was not what we understand today, but generally referred to all kinds of artificially produced products, including music, literature, drama and so on. , even art, magic, medicine, etc. To distinguish it from natural objects, it is very similar to the so-called "six arts" in ancient China, that is, "all-round skills". /kloc-In the 8th century, French aesthetician Abbe barto divided "art" into three categories, among which painting, sculpture, music, dance and poetry were classified as "art", which may be the direct source of the word "art".

brief Introduction of the content

This is an academic monograph focusing on fine arts, demonstrating the occurrence, development and basic characteristics of prehistoric art, but it may also serve as a reference for scholars studying other art categories.

The author, Comrade Deng Fuxing, is the editor-in-chief of Primitive Art, the first volume of China Art History. He unified the writing of doctoral thesis with the study of art history. This kind of practice, might as well use a Sichuan folk proverb to say "do your best" to make a metaphor that may not be exact. As his doctoral supervisor and editor-in-chief of China Art History, I appreciate his practice. The results show that this two-pronged approach has achieved good results. Through several years' efforts, he made the above two tasks related to each other, though different, and achieved an original and successful completion, instead of repeating the views of predecessors.
