Hi, how are you?

I am your good friend Doudou.

"A book is not a static life that stagnates at a certain solidification time, but an element that constructs and guides the surrounding living environment." This is what Kangping Sugula, the forerunner of modern book design, said, and it is also the design concept he insisted on all his life.

He is the core figure of post-war design in Japan, the giant of graphic design, and the architect of information design recognized by the international design community. He spent more than half a century, day after day with the will to challenge the limit, adhere to the design concept of not going with the flow, and created countless groundbreaking works.

The creative thinking and rational thinking in every stage of Kangping Sugura are revolutionary and lead the design language of the times. The concept of editing design put forward by him has changed the mode of communication of publishing media and revealed the essence of book design. His original visual information map puts forward a brand-new concept of media, which lays an important foundation for the information dissemination of digital carriers today.

His design concepts such as "self-appreciation", "dust and noise", "flowing, penetrating and circulating sight" and "the face of a book", as well as his theories such as "the theater that cares for all things in the universe" and "the theory of heaven and earth of Chinese characters" constitute the design theory and methodology of Sugimura.

Throughout his life, Kangping Sugura traveled all over Asia with the brilliant reappearance of Asian civilization as his dream, and integrated the traditional ideas of oriental aesthetic culture and western rational design into his design, which deeply influenced many designers in Japan and even the world.

This is the design world of Kangping Sugura.

? Kangping Sugura was born in Tokyo, Japan from 65438 to 0932, and experienced the Lugouqiao Incident at the age of five. Therefore, his childhood and juvenile education were somewhat influenced by Japanese militarism and war.

I graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Tokyo University of Arts in Japan at the age of 23. From 1964 to 1967, Kangping Sugula was a visiting lecturer at the Ulm School of Design in West Germany. It was here that he learned the methods and ideas of rational design in the west. At the same time, he also deeply felt the profoundness of oriental culture.

This also influenced his later designs. He always tried to integrate the eastern culture and western ideas, and sought the essence of eastern culture in the collision of eastern and western cultures.

Before going to Ulm, the design method of Kangping Sugura focused on the application of "syntactic design", and then turned to the discussion of "semantics".

1967, Kangping Sugura was 35 years old and returned to Japan after finishing teaching at Ulm College.

1972, Kangping Sugula was 40 years old. This year, he accepted the entrustment of UNESCO and began to conduct in-depth research on the characters of Asian countries such as India, Thailand and Indonesia. As a result, Kangping Sugura was aroused from the bottom of his heart's interest in Asian visual arts and culture, and began his book binding and design career.

God is affectionate. When he closes a window for a person, he will open another window for him.

Kangping Sugula worked as a designer, but suffered from severe amblyopia when he was young. His eyesight in both eyes is below 0. 1, and he is also confused and dull. Therefore, when others only see one moon, they can actually squint at more than a dozen moons.

This surprised everyone around him. Why can he see several times more things than ordinary people? What's even more surprising is that his handwriting is exquisite, dense and neat, which is smaller than the 4-5P fine print that ordinary people can see clearly in their vision.

It was this young man with strange eyesight who won the gold medal of "the most beautiful book in the world" in Leipzig, Germany many years later. And this award with an idealistic name is the most authoritative honor in graphic design.

Defect did not hinder the pace of Kangping Sugula, but became a booster for his creative design. In the eyes of Kangping Sugula, the world is multi-angle and multi-sensory. Observation plays an important role in design, but besides seeing with eyes, observation can also be tasted with mouth, heard with ears, smelled with nose and felt with tongue.

This is the world of five senses by Kangping Sugula.

Kangping Sugura, aged 23 (1955), graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Tokyo University of Arts, Japan. This is his first identity: architect.

The education of architectural design can make him full of space design sense in the future graphic design, which is different from others, just like his book design concept: "Books are three-dimensional buildings".

Kangping Sugula's design thought is unique, which may be due to his architectural education and his experience of studying and teaching in the West.

The Japanese aesthetic has always been introverted, pursuing cleanliness and minimalism, and noise is regarded as filth and impurity. Sugiura Kangping didn't think so, but turned the "noise" that everyone despised into an original design.

He gives shapes to noise and electromagnetic waves, some are straight lines, some are black and white stripes and strips, and then cuts and combines them. Noise in his hands, not only rediscovered, but also interestingly modeled life. At that time, graphic designers were mostly painters, and there was no such person as Sugiyama Kangping who used the architectural concept to "constitute the system".

Just like this, Kangping Sugula designed "noise" and gave it another vitality.

"In modern society, the inner universe no longer exists. Modern people have no time to calm down and think, or even forget to close their eyes. Close your eyes and see the universe where you meditate, and there will be an image like Datura (a Buddhist term) ...

The design of Kangping Sugura, including his life, is deeply influenced by the oriental culture, especially the traditional culture of China.

China's Taoist philosophy is the philosophical thought that Sugiura Kangping believed in all his life. When someone asked him, "Do you know why China painted flowers on his teacup?" Sugiura Kangping's answer is: "It is raining in the sky, nourishing the soil and growing flowers and plants, so that life can continue and grow. The teacup is filled with water. Drinking it is like nourishing irrigation like a flower, and human beings can reproduce. " This is a big picture and a big philosophical thinking.

In the eyes of Kangping Sugula, the designer's works are closely related to social behavior. These works you designed will shine at the moment they first appear. Designers need to get in touch with the society, and use the moment as a medium to convince each other with everything they have. Designers should cherish the moment when their works come into contact with the society and regard it as a place for display.

At the same time, the design activity is completed when its works are read by readers and conveyed to the heart.

Kangping Sugula described his design concept like this: "When I was an architect in my early years, I not only paid attention to the structure of the building, but even imagined the color of the room wallpaper. I realize that music, architecture, painting and so on are only one aspect of design. Only by mastering these aspects can we make our hands into fists and make our design powerful. So, I am still learning. "
