Daily life of doctors (II) —— The twists and turns of academic contributions
Hello, I am a doctor of education who studies positive psychology. This is my daily life in the convex and concave.

There is an academic teacher in our department named Margaret L. Kern, but everyone calls her Peggy (here is her website: http://www.peggykern.org/). She is not only a great writer, but also a super sportsman. She won prizes in various marathons and once told us that she would take part in triathlon ... but today she mainly talked about academics!

Peggy, how academic is it? 20 10 received his doctorate. So far, Google's academic H index is 26. What concept? Quote an answer from Zhihu:

Of course, there are differences in various subjects, but the H index is 26 after 7 years of doctoral graduation, which is definitely the cow among cattle. And magically, it may be because of qualifications (because the graduation time is too short? ), she is only a senior lecturer at the University of Mexico for the time being, and she can't get a doctorate yet.

By the way, unlike in China, full professors in Australia are difficult to evaluate, associate professors are already very good, and senior lecturers are also very good. Some senior lecturers can also take doctoral exams. Compared with senior lecturers in China, they should at least be equivalent to associate professors. )

Today, I mainly want to talk about the experience of writing a paper with Peggy. This experience is really enjoyable! I almost fell in love with writing papers! (Um ... almost ... embarrassed)

The process of writing this paper moved me three times:

The first time: even the outline of the paper has been written, how dare you delay?

My former colleague in Tsinghua and I are going to revise Peggy's adolescent happiness scale, named EPOCH. After we collect the data, send it to Peggy. Peggy was on vacation and didn't reply until two weeks later. Students who have written papers should know that this situation is too normal. So we sent another email, ready to urge her.

It doesn't matter this time. A few days later, Peggy ran the data herself, and then posted all the results in an excel form, and replied by email that the results were not bad and she could write according to the outline she gave. At the same time, the outline of the article is attached to the email! The outline includes three levels of titles, as well as the key contents that may be written in each paragraph!

I'm really completely shocked! Many people have procrastination when writing papers, and the reason for procrastination is that they don't know how to start. Moreover, the outline has been written, and you can complete a paper by filling in the blanks. There is no reason to delay! My colleagues and I sighed: No wonder Peggy has sent so many articles!

The second time: it's just a name, don't change it so badly!

Because it's two works, I haven't participated much since the first draft of our article was written. A colleague and Peggy went back and forth several times. I was shocked when I got the final draft. . . What we wrote at that time changed about 50% ... it was really serious.

We just wanted Peggy to have a name, but she changed it too seriously! Later, my colleague was embarrassed and told Peggy that she would do it. After all, it's hard to change so much. Peggy refused, saying that she still had many opportunities to send articles, and there was no shortage of articles. We are young, and now is the time to post articles, and we don't want to rob us.

This reminds me of seeing some domestic tutors and students competing for a position in Zhihu, which is really emotional. Maybe this is Daniel, because he has written enough articles and doesn't have to compete with others. And it is precisely because I didn't compete with others, but did my own research bit by bit, that I became a Daniel.

The third time: the original submission with the cattle people will also be rejected, or three times!

When the article is finished, ask Peggy what magazine she wants to contribute. Peggy said that she could try Social Indicators Research, which is quite a good magazine in our field. I naively thought: Peggy has sent so many articles that she should be very experienced. She revised all our articles and chose a magazine by herself. It should be an instant hit! ? As a result, I didn't expect that this article, which we thought was very reliable, was transferred to other magazines by this magazine because the theme didn't match their magazine.

At this time, I thought, it doesn't matter, but the theme doesn't match. If you find a matching topic, it should be posted soon. I didn't expect the second magazine to ask our parents for their informed consent. Students who have done psychological questionnaires at school may know that it is enough to say hello to their classmates and teachers most of the time. The teacher will send a notice to parents. If parents don't want their children to participate in the survey, they can tell the teacher. However, parents are rarely required to sign the informed consent form one by one, especially in the case of the whole school census. But that magazine insists that children are minors and must be informed and agreed by their guardians. After the failure of Peggy and the Argument, we had to change to another magazine.

Then I found a magazine with a low impact factor and thought it was easy to contribute, so I said, why don't we try this? So we submitted the article to the third issue of the magazine, thinking that it was ok this time! It should be easy to publish such a good article in such an ordinary magazine!

As a result, it didn't ... our article exceeded the requirements and was returned for revision by the editor. I went to talk to argue Publishing House, but it didn't work, so I had to ask Peggy whether to submit another copy or modify it. Peggy said to wait for me. As a result, a week later, just as I was about to send an email to urge her, Peggy sent an email saying that she had revised her paper to the required number of words and could vote.

I was shocked at that time ×666! Peggy didn't have any hesitation and dissatisfaction because we were rejected three times, but kept improving and trying, and gave a reply in the shortest time. In my concept, it used to take about a month to drop out of school. ...

Now I've released the article for the third time. I'm not looking forward to it once, but I'm going to revise it.

At first, I thought Peggy was great because she wrote a good article and she hit the nail on the head. However, after this time, I realized that Niuren can't win by throwing out a manuscript casually, and she will also encounter problems such as rejection, withdrawal, editing or reviewing manuscripts. The difference is that cattle people can make adjustments and modifications quickly according to feedback, instead of being stumped by these things and not giving up just because they are rejected once or twice.

The experience of writing a thesis with Peggy is an important lesson in my doctoral study. I have revised four editions of my previous research paper. I'm a little tired, but obviously I have to continue.

I don't remember who said that, but it must be another great person:

I've only been rejected twice. It seems that there is still a long way to go.
