Some views on the drama mutiny
Captain Queequeg played by Feng is an unpopular minesweeper captain. He is very picky and is keen to criticize the crew for not stuffing their shirts into their pants. On one occasion, he even delayed the command, causing the warship to spin around and break the anchor. He is timid and afraid of death. As the captain guiding the landing route for the Marine Corps, he even dropped a yellow dye indicating that there were fish in this sea area (to prevent other ships from approaching) and then dropped the Marine Corps and ran away at full speed. This incident also earned him the nickname "Yellow Dye". He abused his power and smuggled hard liquor privately during the voyage, but he has been hiding it since it was revealed. In order to find a bowl of strawberries left by the chef, he did not hesitate to ask the officers and men of the whole ship to stop all work and find out the keys to the nonexistent refrigerator stolen by nonexistent people ... What he did made the officers and men at lower levels not very tired of him. Although he has been in the army for more than ten years and is a member of the regular service force of the US Navy, they only have superficial respect for him.
His vice captain, marek, played by Chloe Wang, is a passionate and simple young man. I am easily influenced by others. At the same time, I am honest and have no room for falsehood. My education is not high, but I have the same enthusiasm and loyalty to my career. His good friend's name is Keefer, and he ranks third on the ship. He was a successful writer before he joined the army.
The whole play shows the whole process of confrontation between marek and Queequeg in the military court. On the way to the mission, the minesweeper Kane under their command was hit by a typhoon. The typhoon is very strong, and the Kane is in the center of the typhoon. I won't elaborate on the technical issues here. To put it simply, the ship should go north, but Queequeg insisted on going south. He was extremely panicked. In order to ensure the safety of the ship and its officers and men, marek announced that it had seized the command of the Queequeg at an extremely critical moment, and commanded the warship to escape from the typhoon area safely. However, marek and Queequeg later faced the ruling of a military court-whether it was the only feasible choice for marek to seize the command of Queequeg at that time.
Marek's defense lawyer is Jewish Grievo, who was an excellent young lawyer before joining the army and is now a reserve captain of the US Air Force. His rebuttal is a highlight of the whole play. Unique thinking, not playing cards according to the rules, seems to be doing something bad for his client, but at the last moment, he can always win back. When discussing the case with marek before the trial, it was obvious that marek's mind would never be aware of Queequeg's mental illness. Gulwood concluded that marek's long-term suspicion of the captain was incited by people, and this person is probably marek's many "good friends"-Kiefer. Kiefer is devoted to his novel creation, and the latest work is of course about the US Navy. His evaluation of the US Navy is a combination of first-class commanders and stupid executors. Marek is proud to have such a bosom friend, but Grievous thinks he is dangerous. Kiefer didn't show much in the play. He just appeared as a plaintiff witness and at the final celebration dinner. But it can be seen from the basic provinces that he is an opportunistic person who is good at using all the people around him who are beneficial to him, and many heartless people will admire him. Marek will seize the command of the captain, mostly thanks to him. Marek is a simple-minded man with average grades. How can he sum up a "paranoid personality" from Captain Queequeg's subtle behavior? As marek's best friend, Kiefer is the only one who is well-educated, well-read and knowledgeable. Marek's judgment of Queequeg can only come from him. So Grievous didn't take Keefer, who marek liked and believed he would testify for himself, as his witness, but said a few words as the plaintiff's witness and wouldn't let him speak again. Facts have proved that Kiefer is indeed a self-protective person. His testimony neither offends the plaintiff nor the defendant, and it is not good for both the plaintiff and the defendant.
The highlight of the play is the dialogue between Grievous and Queequeg's psychiatrist. After the incident, the expert team of the Psychiatric Department of the US Navy General Hospital conducted a comprehensive examination of Queequeg's mental condition, and finally reached a unanimous conclusion: Queequeg was in a healthy mental state and could be qualified as the captain of a naval warship. However, Grievous used his outstanding eloquence to guide the doctor into his own logical reasoning step by step, and finally let the doctor say, "Queequeg is delusional. In an extremely critical situation, he may lose control of his own thoughts and be unable to command this ship." The process of asking the doctor is very long, and I only remember some fragments sporadically. The general idea is: first, respect the authority of doctors in the field of mental illness, make doctors complacent and not make them nervous; Then put forward some abnormal manifestations of Queequeg and ask them if they have these symptoms or can be judged to be in good mental state; The doctor divided the problem into different degrees according to his idea. "Most people will have psychological problems of one kind or another, and Captain Queequeg is no exception, but they are all minor and will not hinder him from carrying out his command task." "Doctor, can his above symptoms be summarized as paranoid syndrome?" "No, what syndrome? You have no idea what syndrome is! " "So the term in the field of mental illness is-?" "This can only be called paranoid personality at most!" "So you and your expert group think that people with paranoid personality can also be the captain of the man of God warship?" (The doctor is getting impatient) "As I said, his symptoms are only mild and will not affect his task!" "Doctor, please tell me, which is more difficult, being a captain in the US Navy or being a psychiatrist?" "Well ..." "Have you ever sailed at sea?" "No …" "Have you ever met a typhoon?" "No ..." "Then what makes you conclude that Colonel Queequeg is competent for a task you can't even imagine?" "……"
Finally, the court-martial ended in Grievous' victory. The last scene of the play is a celebration banquet for the publication of Kiefer's new novel. It was a double happiness, and everyone was slightly drunk. Grievous, half drunk, put the cake on Keefer's face and said an embarrassing sentence:
"... yes, I won, but it's disgraceful that I won. I made a police officer with a perfect record who served for more than 10 years infamous. Captain Queequeg may have some problems, but you have more problems. Marek, where did you learn to be paranoid? Thank you, writer friend! He has always been dissatisfied with Queequeg, but he won't do it himself.
Yes, I'm Jewish. You don't know how Jews are treated in continental Europe. Those crazy Nazis will burn Jews to make soap … My mother, an old Jewish lady, will be burned to make soap! We fled to the United States, thinking that we could have a good life, but the Nazis chased us all the way ... who was defending the United States at that time? Who's defending mom? Is that you? Marek? At that time, you were a little boy who knew nothing. Is that you? Keefer? You open champagne to celebrate the publication of your article! I used to be a lawyer. I went to learn to fly a plane. It took me a year and a half to learn to fly a plane. Who will defend America at that time? Who will defend mom? It is a regular service of the US Navy! Those regular service troops who risked their lives in battle! It's people like Queequeg who won't let my mother burn it to make soap!
Queequeg is not guilty ... you are guilty ... "
The end of the play is really dramatic, and the whole theme is reversed as soon as the first turn is made. But the final surprise is really the crowning touch. In the first act, Grievous said that he hated the case he was working on, which was a suspense for the audience. Military court is a bright line, but grievous' psychological change is a dark line. The brilliance of Grievous' speech is only the technical level of the play. What we really want to talk about is the condemnation of the war. Although it is a very common theme, the material selection and angle are novel, and it is worthy of being a classic in drama.
This is my first time to go to the theatre, and the location is good. This play is quite effective. Of course, I want to thank my good child and her good mother for giving me this opportunity. Very happy.
