The list of core journals and statistical source journals listed in the Catalogue of China Core Journals published by Peking University Publishing House (hereinafter referred to as "Overview") and the Citation Report of China Sci-tech Journals published by China Institute of Sci-tech Information (hereinafter referred to as "Report") are the most widely used selection criteria among journals published by domestic authors. They are all high-quality journals selected according to certain principles, and they are also the most important journals for scientific research institutes to evaluate academic achievements. There are both connections and differences between them. Based on the 2004 edition of Report and Summary, this paper compares biomedical journals.
1 core journals and statistical source journals
For a certain discipline, when scientific journals are arranged in descending order according to the number of related papers published, they can be divided into the core area that contributes the most to the discipline and several areas with the same number of papers. The journals located in the core area are called core journals. Statistical source periodicals in a broad sense refer to periodicals collected by various retrieval systems and databases as their literature statistical sources.
Overview is the result of the evaluation of Chinese core journals, a sub-project of "Academic Journal Evaluation and Bibliometrics Research" of the National Social Science Fund. Researchers use bibliometrics statistics and quantitative evaluation, combined with qualitative evaluation of quantitative evaluation results by subject experts, to form the final research results. The list of core journals determined in the Overview has a strong authority in China and a wide range of applications.
According to ISI (institute for scientific information, USA) periodical citation report mode and the actual situation of periodical development in China, the report identified 1576 kinds published in China (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan).
Sci-tech periodicals (2004 edition) are listed as "China Sci-tech Papers Statistical Source Periodicals", also known as China Sci-tech Core Periodicals, with natural science as the main subject category, which is a relatively recognized catalogue of sci-tech statistical source periodicals in China at present. Entrusted by the Ministry of Science and Technology, it has the official color and the authority ranks first in China. People are used to calling it "statistical source periodicals", and the statistical source periodicals mentioned below refer to this catalogue.
2 Similarities between overview and statistical source logs
2. 1 has the same theoretical basis. Both of them are based on Garfield's citation distribution law and Bradford's distribution law, so they can be considered as core journals obtained through strict bibliometrics standards.
2.2 Adopt multi-index qualitative and quantitative evaluation index system. The 2004 edition of Overview adopts the method of combining qualitative and quantitative evaluation, in which the quantitative evaluation index system consists of seven evaluation indexes. In 2004, two parts *** 15 indicators were selected for the evaluation and measurement indicators of statistical source journals, namely, journal citation measurement indicators and source journal measurement indicators.
2.3 Neither research result can be used as the gold standard. Core journals and statistical source journals are relative statistical concepts. Due to the limitations of bibliometrics theory, the incompleteness of data collection and statistical methods, there will be shortcomings and deficiencies in evaluation, and the research results cannot be as accurate as natural science. Therefore, they can only be used as reference tools, but not as the "gold standard" for testing the quality of periodicals. Overexaggerating their functions will only bring negative effects.
3 "Overview" and "statistical source journals" difference
3. 1 Overview by different editors and publishers is jointly developed by Peking University Library and Peking University Library Periodical Work Research Association, which belongs to the folk nature; The Statistical Source Journal was commissioned by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China and completed by the China Institute of Science and Technology Information, which has a certain official nature.
3.2 The principles of discipline classification are different, and both of them adopt the method of statistical discipline evaluation index data. The division of disciplines has a great influence on the evaluation results of journals. If the discipline division is too large, the journals with strong academic disciplines will be submerged. If the division is too fine, the general journals of small disciplines will enter the core area. According to the Library Classification of China (4th edition), there are 74 subject categories, taking into account the number and nature of subject periodicals. According to the national standard of discipline classification issued by the State Bureau of Technical Supervision and the discipline classification principle of China Library and Information Classification (4th edition), the statistical source journals have added comprehensive categories and science and engineering categories, industrial comprehensive categories and management categories, further subdivided agricultural disciplines and medical and health disciplines, and set up 55 discipline categories.
3.3 Different Sources and Scope of Journals "Overview" takes 52 kinds of databases or abstract publications as the statistical sources of evaluation indicators, and the total number of statistical documents reaches 9.43 million, involving journals 1.2 million. Through the quantitative evaluation and qualitative evaluation methods of multi-index comprehensive evaluation, 15% of the number of professional journals in various disciplines and 2% of the number of journals entering statistics are selected, and * * * selects 65438. It covers a wide range of disciplines, including social sciences (sociology, politics, law, military, economy, culture and education, history, etc. ) and natural sciences (medicine, agriculture, industrial technology, etc. ), but excluding English publications published in Hongkong, Macau, Taiwan Province and China.
The selection of statistical source journals refers to the situation of domestic journals included in important foreign retrieval databases, the results of existing bibliometrics analysis in China, large domestic retrieval tools, journals of various societies and their important journals, etc. And consult experts' opinions, and make some adjustments to the source periodical list every year according to factors such as the citation of periodical literature. The principles of periodical selection are: ① peer review of periodical literature; ② Metrological indicators of periodical literature; ③ Social and disciplinary influence of periodicals; (4) Whether the periodical literature reflects the research results of this discipline; ⑤ Take care of emerging disciplines and high-tech disciplines; ⑥ Appropriate regional consideration; ⑦ Display at home and abroad. Statistical source journals only include domestic sci-tech journals, including domestic English journals, excluding social science journals.
3.4 The evaluation index system is different. Summarize the method of combining qualitative and quantitative methods. Core journals select 52 kinds of databases or abstract publications as statistical sources of evaluation indicators. The evaluation index system consists of seven evaluation indexes: the number of requests, the number of picks, the number of citations, the number of citations by others, influencing factors, the rate of picks, awards or inclusion in important retrieval tools. Experts have strong qualitative evaluation, and * * * select 187 1 evaluation experts to participate in the evaluation of core journals. However, the qualitative evaluation of statistical source journals is relatively weak. Although it has undergone certain peer review, it focuses on quantitative research and emphasizes the objectivity of research results. In 2004, two parts of *** 15 indicators were selected to evaluate the measurement indicators: ① periodical citation measurement indicators: total cited frequency, impact factor, diffusion factor and number of cited periodicals, namely annual indicators, other cited rates and cited half-life. It mainly shows the extent to which periodicals are used and valued by readers, as well as their position and role in scientific exchanges. ② Metrological indicators of source periodicals: the quantity of source documents, the quantity of reference documents, the average citation rate, the average number of authors, the number of regional distribution, the number of institutions, the ratio of international papers and the ratio of funded papers. Through the statistical analysis of the source documents, this paper comprehensively describes the academic level, editing status and scientific exchange degree of the journal.
3.5 Overview of the Number of Journals Collected The total number of journals included in the Core Journals Catalogue is 65,438+0,798, including 44 in biological sciences and 223 in medicine and health. Statistical source journals 1576 species, including 5/kloc-0 species in biological science and 423 species in medicine and health. 223 biomedical journals are not only the core journals confirmed in the overview, but also the statistical source journals. The journals of the two journals are completely consistent in specialist medicine, otolaryngology, dermatology, neurology and psychiatry, oncology, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, stomatology, surgery, dermatology, sexually transmitted diseases and so on. See table 1 for the comparison of biomedical journals collected by the two journals, and table 2 for those that belong to the core journals of review rather than statistical sources. Table 1 List of Biomedical Journals and Statistical Source Journals Comparison of Subject Category Names Statistical Source Journals (omitted)
3.6 The publishing cycle is different. The Survey is published every four years, and the publication time is about 2.5 years behind the statistics, which reflects that the periodical changes are not timely enough. Statistical source journals are updated every year, which can quickly reflect the development trend of journals.
3.7 The evaluation results of comprehensive subject journals are different from those of marginal and interdisciplinary subjects. Because the general review is evaluated by discipline, it is difficult for comprehensive and interdisciplinary journals to enter the list of core journals because the published papers are scattered. In the 2000 edition, by adding comprehensive subject categories, the data of comprehensive journals scattered in various disciplines were summarized and evaluated, and a comprehensive core journal list was produced, which solved the problem of comprehensive journals well. However, the problem that outstanding journals in marginal and interdisciplinary disciplines cannot enter the core area has not been well solved.
When selecting journals with statistical sources, we should give some consideration to emerging disciplines and high-tech disciplines, and choose marginal and overlapping journals such as Chinese Journal of Maritime Medicine and Hypertensive Medicine, Chinese Journal of Elderly Multiple Organ Diseases and Journal of Audiology and Speech Pathology as statistical sources.
4. Pay attention to rational use
Both core journals and statistical source journals use qualitative and quantitative evaluation methods to evaluate academic journals objectively and fairly, thus becoming a more recognized periodical evaluation tool in China at present. However, core journals and statistical source journals are only a relative statistical concept, and there is no absolute quantitative index. Their research results can be used as a reference tool to evaluate academic research results and readers' contributions, but if they are used as absolute standards to measure the level of papers, there may be fallacies. Personally, the academic level of every paper published in core journals or statistical source journals is not necessarily high, and the academic level of every article published in non-core journals and non-statistical source journals is not necessarily low. Subject experts should be invited to evaluate the academic value of the paper according to the specific situation of the evaluation project. Therefore, when using the two periodic tables, we should avoid exaggerating the adverse effects caused by their functions.
Comparison between Chinese Core Journals and China Science and Technology Core Journals (referred to as "Statistical Source Journals" for short) (2) The sources and scope of periodicals are different.
