[Abstract] The Constitution of People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Birth Process of China say that Marxism-Leninism is different from Marxism in a narrow sense and Marxism in a broad sense, which can be called Marxism in the third sense. Its scientific connotation is the universal truth in Marxism–Leninism, and its extension includes Marxist scientific world outlook and methodology and the basic principles derived from it. This is the pulse of Marxism and must be adhered to. Marxism keeps pace with the times because of the development of practice, the mistakes of personal judgment of Marxist classic writers and the deepening of people's understanding. Marxism has the theoretical character of practicality, scientificity, popularity and openness, which needs our comprehensive and dialectical grasp. The ways to develop Marxism include relying on mass practice and following the law of division of labor. The most important manifestation of the development of Marxism is the progress of practice under its guidance ―― the prosperity of the country and the prosperity and happiness of the people.

Marxism has always been the guiding ideology of our party. However, for a long time in the past, there were many deviations in our understanding of Marxism. Today, there are still many issues to be discussed. In this respect, Deng Xiaoping Theory and Theory of Three Represents's theory have made great progress. Guided by this, it is of great significance for us to further study what Marxism is, how to treat Marxism, and establish a scientific view of Marxism, so as to correct our guiding ideology and promote the development of Socialism with Chinese characteristics.

First, the multiple meanings of Marxism

At present, there are all kinds of Marxism in the world, including Marxism in socialist countries, Marxism in western countries, Marxism in Eastern Europe and Russia. As far as China is concerned, Marxism has at least three different meanings.

1. Marxism with three different meanings

The first meaning is "Marxism is the system of Marx's viewpoints and theories." [1] This is a definition given by Lenin, which is also recognized by the world. This is Marxism in a narrow sense. Similarly, Marxism–Leninism can be said to be "a system of views and theories of Marx, Engels and Lenin" in a narrow sense.

As the viewpoint and theory of Marx and Engels, Marxism contains very rich contents. According to Lenin's authoritative explanation, it has three basic components, namely Marxist philosophy, Marxist political economy and scientific socialism. [2]

Marxism in the second sense not only refers to the views and theories of Marx and Engels, but also includes their enrichment and development by later generations. This is Marxism in a broad sense. Thought, Deng Xiaoping Theory and Theory of Three Represents all belong to Marxism in a broad sense.

What we need to focus on now is Marxism as the guiding ideology of our party and country, that is, "Marxism–Leninism" as mentioned in the Constitution of People's Republic of China (PRC) and the birth of China. Marxism-Leninism here is obviously different from Marxism in a broad sense. The question is, is it exactly the same as Marxism-Leninism in a narrow sense? If we think they are completely equivalent, then we should take every assertion and even every sentence of Marx, Engels and Lenin as our guiding ideology. This is the dogmatism that must be opposed. I think "Marxism-Leninism" as our guiding ideology is basically the same as "Marxism-Leninism" in a narrow sense, but there are also important differences: the former is only a part of the latter. In this sense, the former can be called Marxism in the third sense.

Because this means taking Marxism–Leninism (also called Marxism for short) as the guiding ideology of our party and country, it is of great significance. Understanding this problem is the key point for us to truly understand what Marxism is. Therefore, the following focuses on this issue.

2. The third meaning of Marxist connotation

We take Marxism–Leninism as the guiding ideology, which is obviously not all the expositions of Marx, Engels and Lenin, but the theory that has been proved by practice to be scientific and of universal significance (that is, instructive to China). This generalization includes two meanings: one is a theory that has been proved to be scientific by practice. Because only such a theory can have reliable truth and be qualified as the guiding ideology of our party. Those ideological theories that have not been proved by practice are not necessarily correct, and they cannot be used as the guiding ideology of our party. Second, it is a "universal" theory. This is a further definition on the basis of the previous meaning. The reason is that some thoughts and theories of Marx, Engels and Lenin are correct in a certain period and under certain conditions, but they are not of universal significance, are not applicable to China and cannot be used as our guiding ideology. In a word, Marxism–Leninism, as our guiding ideology, refers to the "universal truth" in the theories of Marx, Engels and Lenin.

The above understanding is also based on Marxist classics. It has been said many times in the past: "Once the universal truth of Marxism-Leninism is combined with the concrete practice of the China revolution, the face of the China revolution will change." [3] He particularly emphasized that for Marxism–Leninism, "what we want to learn is something that belongs to the universal truth, and learning must be combined with the reality of China. It would be terrible to copy every sentence, including Marx's. Our theory is that the universal truth of Marxism–Leninism is combined with the concrete practice of the China Revolution. " [4] Deng Xiaoping further pointed out: "Combining the universal truth of Marxism with China's specific reality, taking our own road and building socialism with China characteristics is the basic conclusion we have drawn from long-term historical experience." [5] These discourses all emphasize that what we should learn and adhere to is the "universal truth" of Marxism-Leninism. The so-called universal truth is a theory that has been proved by practice to be scientific and of universal significance.

3. The extension of Marxism in the third sense

Since Marxism-Leninism as our guiding ideology is a part of narrow Marxism, let's start with narrow Marxism. This is a profound theoretical system, including many components. However, its components cannot be equally important, but, like all other systems, they are hierarchical. The viewpoints and theories of Marx, Engels and Lenin can be divided into three levels: the level-concrete conclusions and personal judgments, the middle level-basic principles, and the core level-world outlook and methodology. They are progressive relations from the individual to the general and from the concrete to the abstract. The basic principles of Marxism are embodied in concrete conclusions, and the world outlook and methodology are the essence and soul of these basic principles and concrete conclusions.

What does the universal truth of Marxism include?

The first is Marxist scientific world outlook and methodology, that is, Marxist philosophy. This is the essence of all Marxism, summed up in China language, that is, seeking truth from facts. It undoubtedly belongs to "a theory that has been proved by practice to be scientific and of universal significance". Therefore, as our guiding ideology, Marxism first refers to its scientific world outlook and methodology. In the new period of our country, our party has repeatedly stressed that seeking truth from facts is the essence, fundamental point or basic point of Marxism (that is, the most fundamental and important thing), and stressed the study of Marxist philosophy, expressing this basic idea.

Second, the basic principles of Marxism. Generally speaking, these basic principles have been proved to be scientific theories by practice and have certain universal significance. Therefore, we should stick to them as a whole. It should be noted that the contents of the basic principles of Marxism are very rich, some of which have a wide scope of application, while others have a narrow scope of application, which needs to be analyzed in detail. For example, Marx's theory of class struggle and Marx's theory of labor value cannot be simply applied to the reality of China.

Needless to say, the specific conclusions and individual conclusions of Marx and Engels are usually answers to special questions under the conditions at that time, and they have no universal significance, so they cannot be used as our guiding ideology.

Second, Marxism comes down in one continuous line.

Marxism in a broad sense is called Marxism mainly because there is something consistent between them, that is, the same essence of * * *. What needs to be studied now is the content of Marxist "pulse" and the reasons why it must be adhered to.

1. The connotation of Marxist "pulse"

This is the universal truth of Marxism, specifically referring to its scientific world outlook and methodology and the basic principles developed from it.

Marxist philosophy is the essence of all Marxism. Its content is very rich, mainly including practical viewpoint, production viewpoint, mass viewpoint, class viewpoint, dialectical viewpoint and historical viewpoint. On the one hand, these views reflect the objective laws, especially the universal laws of social and historical development, among which the most important is that productivity is the law that ultimately determines the strength of social development and the people are the creators of history, which is a highly scientific and inviolable universal truth; On the other hand, on the basis of the former, these views express the interests of the vast majority of people represented by the proletariat, have lofty popularity, embody the basic position and value orientation of Marxism, and are the unity of science and popularity, truth and value. Therefore, the basic spirit of Marxist philosophy and all Marxism is the unity of truth and value based on practice, especially material production, that is, on the basis of respecting objective laws, especially social laws, the vast majority of people (including everyone) will benefit.

The social significance of the universal truth of Marxism lies in guiding and helping the working class and the broad masses of the people to destroy the old world and create a new society. This new society is socialism and * * * socialist society, that is, a society in which the productive forces develop rapidly, the people are rich and happy, and everyone develops freely and comprehensively. This is a scientific, progressive and lofty social ideal.

Marxism holds lofty social ideals, but more importantly, it can be put into practice. This is due to the requirements of his world outlook. The materialistic and dialectical view of practice is Marx's initiative and the cornerstone of all Marxist theories. It not only emphasizes that social life is essentially practice, and practice is the basis of all knowledge including theory, but also emphasizes that theory should serve practice, solve practical problems, and advocate transforming the world with revolutionary practice and promoting social progress. When Engels evaluated Marx's life, after fully affirming his two major discoveries in theory, he also emphasized that these discoveries were far from the main ones, "because Marx was a revolutionary first." He effectively organized and participated in the revolutionary practice of changing the capitalist world. [6] Marxism is not knowledge in learning, but a theory of practice and action. This is the characteristic and advantage of Marxism.

2. The reason why we must adhere to the pulse of Marxism.

First, respect history. Since its birth, Marxism has played a great role in world history and greatly changed the face of human society. It not only made a large part of mankind embark on the socialist road and created a new direction of world history, but also profoundly criticized the serious drawbacks of capitalism, promoted the self-adjustment of capitalist society from the opposite side, significantly increased the socialist factors in modern capitalist countries and greatly improved the civilization level of the whole world. We must give due respect to the theory that has played such a huge role (which is rare in world history). Especially for China, the role of Marxism can not be ignored. With Marxism, China's * * * production party can be established, and China's revolution, construction and reform can be victorious. Marxism is the basis of our ideological theory, and we can't lose it at all.

Second, respect science. Marxism reveals the general law and development trend of human society, reflects the interests of the working class and the broad masses of the people, puts forward a beautiful ideal about the future society, and points out the direction of struggle for us. The universal truth that reflects the universal law is inviolable, the value orientation of progress is inviolable, and the pursuit of beautiful ideals is the spiritual driving force of our unremitting struggle.

Third, practical needs. After decades of study, publicity and education, Marxism has been deeply rooted in the hearts of the people in China and has become an important spiritual force. A big party with more than 70 million people in party member and a big country with a population of 65.438+0.3 billion must have a common idea and spiritual pillar, which can only be Marxism. This is our ideological basis for safeguarding party unity and national unity. The unity of the party and the unity of the country are the basic conditions for us to carry out socialist modernization and realize the prosperity and happiness of the people. If we abandon Marxism, our party will split, our country will be in chaos, our socialist cause will fail and the interests of the people will be seriously damaged. It can be seen that the realistic politics of maintaining the unity of the party and the country and realizing the fundamental interests of the people also requires us to adhere to Marxism. Of course, this refers to Marxism in scientific understanding.

Third, Marxism keeps pace with the times.

All Marxism develops and advances with the development of practice, times and science.

1. The main manifestation of Marxism advancing with the times

Marxism itself is the product of keeping pace with the times. There is no Marxism if you stick to the rules. Based on the social reality and changes in Europe in the middle of19th century, Marx and Engels bravely broke the wrong ideas of their predecessors before they founded a brand-new Marxist theory and realized great changes in the history of human thought. /kloc-for more than 0/00 years, Marxism has been enriched and developed from Marx to Lenin. Now, when we study Marxism, the center and key point is to learn the latest achievements of Marxism in contemporary China and Marxism in China, namely Deng Xiaoping Theory, Theory of Three Represents and Scientific Outlook on Development. Because they not only adhere to the basic spirit of Marxism, but also adapt to China's special national conditions, reflect the development and changes of the times, and have more realistic and direct guiding significance for our practice.

Taking emancipating the mind and seeking truth from facts as the essence, and building Socialism with Chinese characteristics and realizing China's prosperity as the theme and fundamental goal, Deng Xiaoping Theory put forward the theory of primary stage of socialism (starting point), the theory of socialist market economy (main road) and the theory of socialist essence (direction), and made new judgments on a series of major issues in the contemporary world. On this basis, our party has formulated a basic line and a series of principles and policies with "one center and two basic points" as the main content, which has guided China to embark on a new road of reform, opening up and socialist modernization, and achieved great achievements that have attracted worldwide attention, which has enabled poor and backward China to enter a new stage of building a well-off society in an all-round way and formed a systematic theory of building Socialism with Chinese characteristics.

Theory of Three Represents has adapted to the great changes in the world, national conditions and party conditions in the late 20th century and early 20th century. On the basis of Deng Xiaoping Theory, he further answered the questions of what socialism is and how to build it, especially what kind of party to build and how to build it, and put forward a series of new ideas, new viewpoints and new theories. [7] He made great innovations in many aspects, reflecting the new realm of Marxism (emphasizing advancing with the times, guiding practice with developing Marxism, and focusing on innovation, etc.). ), the new concept of socialism (realizing people's prosperity and happiness is the fundamental goal, promoting all-round social progress and all-round development of people, different social systems should exist for a long time, learn from each other's strengths, and so on. ), and the new awakening of the construction of the ruling party (the theory of "two transformations" and the theory of "two pioneers" unification, etc. ). It is China Marxism facing the 2 1 century, and it is the fundamental guideline for us to build a well-off society in an all-round way.

Since the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, faced with the new social contradictions and problems brought about by the rapid development of more than 20 years, our party has put forward Scientific Outlook on Development, a "people-oriented, comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable development", a new concept of building a harmonious socialist society, and major issues such as strengthening the Party's advanced construction, which further promoted Socialism with Chinese characteristics Theory (including Deng Xiaoping Theory and Theory of Three Represents).

2. The reason why Marxism keeps pace with the times.

First of all, practice is constantly developing. Due to the changes of historical conditions and problems, the original theory is no longer applicable and needs to be re-recognized. From Marx to Lenin, and then to Deng Xiaoping, until today, Marxism has made great progress, mainly because the times are developing and the national conditions are changing.

Secondly, there are mistakes in the individual judgments of Marxist classical writers, which need to be corrected. For example, Marx and Engels' estimation of the revolutionary situation at that time foresaw the vitality of capitalism, and [8] made a personal judgment that the future society was "limited by historical conditions and still had utopian factors"; [9] Lenin's planned economy view of socialist countries "The whole society is a big factory", [10] the prediction of * * * capitalism coming, [1 1] and so on.

Finally, people's understanding deepens and the original theory will be developed. With the repetition of practice and the accumulation of experience, even if the historical conditions have not changed greatly, it is possible for people to understand the problem from a new angle and at a deeper level, which will also promote the development of theory.

Therefore, as our guiding ideology, "developing Marxism" originated from Marx, but it is not limited to Marx and is generally higher than Marx. The former has a triple relationship of inheritance, revision and development to the latter.

Fourth, the scientific attitude towards Marxism.

Adhering to and developing the basic experience and fundamental principles of Marxism is to combine the universal truth of Marxism with the concrete reality of China, so as to promote the development of our various undertakings. To this end, we need to pay attention to the following links:

1. Comprehensively and dialectically grasp the theoretical character of Marxism.

Put forward: "Marxism has the theoretical quality of keeping pace with the times." [12] Now, this view has been deeply rooted in people's hearts. At the same time, we should also attach importance to the relevant expositions of Marxist classic writers and unify them. Based on the previous research results, we can say that the basic qualities of Marxism are practicality, scientificity, popularity (consistent with the class nature of the proletariat) and openness (that is, keeping pace with the times). We need to grasp them comprehensively and dialectically.

Marxism is practical. It especially emphasizes that practice is the basis of theory, and theory comes from practice, is tested by practice, changes with the development of practice, and finally serves practice. The actual situation is constantly changing, while the theory is relatively stable and often lags behind the practice. If the actual situation is compared to "topography" or "landform", the theory is "map". When great changes have taken place in social life, we should not expect to correct the "terrain" according to the "map", but only correct the "map" according to the "terrain". Adhering to this practical viewpoint and rectifying the relationship between theory (including Marxism) and practice is the fundamental point of adhering to Marxism. We must treat Marxism with an attitude of keeping pace with the times. Only by developing Marxism can we scientifically explain and correctly guide the new practice.

Marxism is scientific. It mainly shows that Marxism reveals the general law of the development of human society and is a scientific truth. However, we should not make this absolute. Engels said: "The opposition between truth and falsehood has only a relative meaning. Knowledge that is regarded as truth today, its hidden mistakes will be revealed later. Similarly, knowledge that is considered wrong today has its reasons, so it can be considered correct before. " "We are almost at the beginning of human history. In the future, there may be more descendants who correct our mistakes than the previous generation. They may often correct their cognitive mistakes with great contempt." [13] Knowledge is always developing. Like all sciences, the great development of Marxism usually contains breakthroughs in some important viewpoints of predecessors.

Marxism has a class nature, but it is consistent with the people's nature. Marx and Engels emphasized the class nature of the proletariat, on the one hand, because Britain, where they lived at that time, had realized industrialization, and the proletariat accounted for the vast majority of the population. In this sense, the proletariat is basically the same as the people who make up the vast majority of the population. Therefore, Marx and Engels sometimes said, "The people are the proletariat". [14] On the other hand, it is because they believe that with the development of capitalism, class relations will be increasingly simplified (this is not the case), and the vast majority of mankind will soon enter the proletariat representing the long-term interests of the overwhelming majority of the people. In these two cases, the class nature of the proletariat and the people's nature are not antagonistic. It is always the fundamental purpose of Marxism to seek benefits for the vast majority of people.

Marxism is open. To adhere to the universal truth of Marxism, we can neither stand still nor be monopolized by anyone. It is bound to make continuous progress with the development of practice, times and science. In the past 100 years, Marxist philosophy and other basic principles have made great progress. This development includes not only the relevant thoughts of our party leaders, but also the universal truth summed up by others and even foreigners. These universal truths are consistent and compatible with Marxism in essence. Marxism has no national boundaries and is not limited to the thoughts of leaders. As long as it is the right thing, even if the "ancestors" didn't say it, we should do it. Since the reform and opening up, we have said many new words that Marxism-Leninism has not said, but have played a great guiding role in practice! Lenin said: "Marxism and sectarianism have nothing in common, and they are by no means self-styled and rigid theories divorced from the development path of world civilization." [15] From the macro perspective of world history, Marxism is truth as a whole, but it is not the "encyclopedia" of truth, but only a very important part of the long river of human truth. Although many other countries are not guided by Marxism, they are generally developing and progressing, and their ideological theories also contain many scientific elements. Especially those countries with high practical level, that is, countries with developed economy and culture, need us to study and learn from them seriously. Marxism must pay attention to absorbing all the achievements of human civilization in its development.

Does this "generalize" Marxism? The word "generalization" has a derogatory meaning, and the correct statement is "rich development". The fundamental reason for "rich development" is that practice is constantly changing and developing, and new things emerge one after another. It is far from enough to rely on the original things of the "ancestors". Therefore, Marxism, as the guiding ideology of our party and country, must be constantly enriched and developed.

The scientific nature of Marxism is unified with the people's nature, because the people need science, and the more scientific things are, the more in line with the people's interests. As Engels said, "The more reckless and selfless science is, the more in line with the interests and wishes of workers." [16] Because the world reflected by the theory is constantly changing and developing, a scientific and popular theory must also keep pace with the times and reflect openness. All this is based on practice (first of all, material production) and its constant change and development.

2. Turn the universal truth of Marxism into method and value orientation.

The main function of Marxism is to guide the social practice of the working class and the broad masses of people. To play this role, we must transform the universal truth of Marxism into methods and value orientations.

Many comrades sincerely adhere to Marxism, but they can't learn to use it. They often go against Marxism when analyzing specific historical issues. In fact, Marxism contains rich methodological thoughts, mainly dialectical determinism and practical standards from the practical point of view, social basic contradiction theory from the production point of view, especially the standard of productivity, mass line from the mass point of view, especially the standard of people's interests, class stratum analysis from the class point of view, contradiction (system) analysis from the dialectical point of view, historicism method from the historical point of view and so on. Their summary is our party's ideological line of seeking truth from facts. If we want to uphold and develop Marxism, we must seriously study and consciously use these methods.

Others only regard Marxism as a "signboard" or "amulet", or even as a "stick" to repel dissidents. They are Marxism, collectivism and * * * productism verbally, but in fact they are individualism and feudal absolutism. In fact, as far as the core value orientation is concerned, Marxism is not metaphysical, that is, it seeks interests for the vast majority of people on the basis of respecting objective laws, including reasonable personal interests, that is, it realizes everyone's free and all-round development. Marxism inherently contains ethical guidance and cannot put personal interests in its proper position, so it is not true Marxism.

If we really turn theory into method, character and practice, why can't Marxism have more and more influence in China and even the world?

3. Clearly adhere to and develop Marxist standards and methods.

How to grasp the standard of adhering to Marxism is an unsolved major issue in theory and practice. Years of experience and lessons tell us that we can't take some words, concrete conclusions and individual basic principles (such as the principle of class struggle) of adhering to Marxism as the judgment standard. Many of their expositions on ownership, distribution mode, specific system and revolutionary form are "historical science" [17] and must be transferred according to specific historical conditions, all of which belong to the ranks of ways, means and methods, and are not the "hard core" of Marxism. Adhering to or deviating from the basic standards of Marxism means following or violating the basic spirit of Marxism, that is, whether to seek benefits for the vast majority of people (including everyone) on the basis of respecting objective laws, especially social laws. Among them, "respecting objective laws, especially social laws" is the premise and foundation, which embodies the scientific nature of Marxism; And "seeking benefits for the vast majority of people (including everyone)" is the core and purpose, which embodies the people's nature of Marxism. As long as we adhere to this basic spirit, we will truly adhere to Marxism. It can also be seen that all theories that reflect objective laws and conform to the interests of the vast majority of people are Marxist or conform to Marxism. Marxism must maintain a broad mind that embraces all rivers. If we ask what is the difference between Marxism and other philosophical and social science theories, we can say that Marxists should have a more conscious, comprehensive and profound understanding of objective laws and people's interests. In action, we should be more determined, more thorough and more thorough.

The basic way or specific mechanism to develop Marxism is to rely on mass practice, follow the law of division of labor, gather collective wisdom (including personal creation) and absorb cultural nutrition.

The main manifestation of the development of Marxism is to generalize new scientific theories according to the development of practice, especially the progress of practice under its guidance. Thought is regarded as a developed Marxism, mainly because it has guided the China Revolution to a brilliant victory. Deng Xiaoping Theory and Theory of Three Represents are Marxism in contemporary China, because they have guided the people of China to achieve great achievements in reform, opening up and socialist modernization. Our cause has made greater and greater achievements, our country has become increasingly prosperous and powerful, and people's lives have become increasingly rich and happy. Our basic theory, that is, developing Marxism, will become more and more attractive and convincing.
