Rashomon review 1
Rashomon is a film directed by Akira Kurosawa in 1950. Rashomon is the south gate of Kyoto, Japan. Rainstorm, broken plaque. The plain pictures in black and white movies are heavier. A wandering monk, a woodcutter and a beggar took shelter from the rain under the city gate. They talked about a case: a samurai and his wife passed by a barren mountain and had an accident. Wife insulted, samurai killed. How did the tragedy happen? The murderer, the wife, the dead soldier and the witch have their own opinions.
The murderers, wives and witches who testified in The Dead Warrior all omitted or beautified the evil elements in human nature in the process of telling the facts of the case. This is a murder case, and the truth is covered up by selfishness and hypocrisy because of their respective weaknesses. I'm not very busy recently. I have seen many movies that have always been regarded as classics by the world, and many of them are really good. Maybe the film made in that way is the real art.
The old Japanese film Rashomon has a simple story structure and only a few characters. It always makes people feel uneasy after reading it. Only after watching the film at the end of the film will they understand why the monk has the dialogue at the beginning of the film. "This time, I may lose confidence in the human soul, which is more terrible than robbers, wars, plagues and famines."
The film reveals the most terrible thing in the world from the story and the storyteller, that is, dishonesty between people. Everyone can lie, betray others and be desperate to protect their own interests, which really scares me.
Another angle of the film is that the seemingly docile and weak young woman is always in tears. When she touches her own interests and safety, her face is so ferocious, and the changes in her inner activities are so rich, even more vicious than robbers and husbands. China's phrase "the heart divides the belly" is also quite reasonable.
No matter a robber, a warrior, a young woman, a woodcutter, a witch or even a fictional ghost, none of them are honest and trust each other. They all lie and cheat for their own interests, which makes people feel scared, even more than any horror film.
Only when the rain stopped at the end of the film did the foreign story show the dawn. When the woodcutter admitted his deception and walked out of Rashomon with the baby he found, he saw the gentleness and kindness of human nature, which may be the only hope.

Kurosawa only watched Shadow Warrior and some Seven Warriors before, but he was not used to his style at first and didn't leave a deep impression. A few days ago, my friend recommended Rashomon. After reading it, it far exceeded my expectations.
Rashomon introduced the case of a murderer, which was told by the parties and witnesses respectively, but each narrative had its own way out. This is all because of the inferiority of human nature, and for their own interests, they forcibly conceal and tamper with the truth, making the facts more tortuous and vague. Especially when I saw the reason why Jane asked the robber who insulted her to kill her husband, I was surprised. First of all, I can't understand her moral standards. Her absurd moral standards are on the side of the robbers who hurt her. She has neither respect for her lawful husband nor basic self-esteem. Secondly, how could she make such a cruel decision? Where did she put her husband and robbers, especially herself? Or everyone is humble, everyone is humble in the eyes of others, and people are strangely and accidentally connected, but in a short time, they return to the true colors of indifference and hatred. So at the beginning of the film, two outsiders always said repeatedly, "This is terrible, terrible." Kurosawa's successful film about human nature benefits from Akutagawa's good handwriting, but the film is also quite successful in shooting skills.
Not limited to tradition. Four people are being investigated in the yamen, and there are no interrogators and relevant officials. There is only an open yard, and four people take turns kneeling on the ground to answer a series of stories, which saves many seemingly important scenes. But in Kurosawa's films, it is obvious that his theme is not what kind of story this is, but everyone's humanity, and the close-up enlarges a person. So it's not a traditional narrative, it's more like talking to yourself about some philosophical problems.
Generally speaking, Rashomon is a relatively perfect movie, with no nonsense and unnecessary details, but the story is too simple and the viewpoint is too obvious, but it is far less depressing than Shadow Warrior and Seven Samurai.

Today, I finally watched this long-lost film noir, which was really interesting.
Rashomon reveals the greatest weakness of human nature-selfishness and hypocrisy. Even loving couples will turn against each other and hurt each other in times of crisis and do or die. After the incident, both sides have a set of rhetoric to defend themselves. It is always others who make mistakes. How innocent they are.
But we can also see from this movie that men are always more selfish and hypocritical than women. A man can be selfish enough to spit on his wife to save himself, or hypocritical enough to lie to beautify himself. You might say that the wife in the film is also selfish. She incited her husband to a duel with the robber. She also lied that she fainted and didn't know how her husband died. But her selfishness and hypocrisy were a helpless choice in that desperate situation at that time. After being defiled by her unsuccessful struggle with the robbers, she didn't want to die or go with them. She wanted her husband to fight the robbers to protect herself. This really can't be said to be a very excessive request. Her lies are easier to understand. Obviously, she wants to protect herself, win everyone's sympathy and make herself better. She can't jump out and say that I started their duel. It is meaningless to restore the truth of the matter at this time. Her cowardly husband would rather say that he committed suicide than admit that he was killed by a robber.
Of course, this film magnifies the dark side of human nature. Ordinary people may never face such an extreme situation. Most people still think more about their own interests without hurting others, and then selectively ignore those disgraceful details when talking about them, and exaggerate those that are beneficial to them. If selfishness is human's animal instinct, then hypocrisy is human's social instinct, which is universal and objective.
Most importantly, this story tells us that the world we live in is not black and white, there is no absolute right and wrong, good and evil, beauty and ugliness, everyone has their own weaknesses and dark side, and we should be more tolerant and understanding, not disappointed and critical.
