The question is actually: why is the writing amazing but not so smooth and heavy?
The original meaning of writing refers to the article itself and writing skills, generally referring to the style or style of the article. But when we talk about writing today, we generally refer to the personal style formed by the creator's unique writing skills. Therefore, we can use words like "stunning" and "heavy" to describe it, which is the most direct feeling that the author's writing gives readers.
Where does the "stunning" style come from? Nature comes from novel and interesting article ideas and maverick expressions. This is very obvious in early poetry, especially after Cao Zhi initiated the rhetoric of poetry, and the poetic style reached a metaphysical extreme at the end of the Southern and Northern Dynasties, becoming an extremely exquisite and magnificent "Qi Liang Style". At that time, it became a common practice, and poets in the Southern Dynasties enjoyed it and despised the vast atmosphere and rough and clear poetic style from the north.
However, this empty and flashy formalism has not improved the content of poetry, and has always stayed in writing romantic stories and beautiful feelings. When the national wind began to soar, it was severely criticized by poets in the early Tang Dynasty.
Why? Because of the novel expression, the content of Jixing Dujue (in Chen Ziang) is not about integrity. No matter how clever the trick is, it is like a variety of actions before the tea ceremony, and the result is still a shit-flavored tea soup. Who would like it? A good article needs novel and interesting writing and rich content, which is called "gentleness", just like a beautiful tea ceremony master fiddling with eye-catching skills for a while and serving a refreshing cup of fragrant tea, which is a kind of enjoyment.
Tang poetry is this cup of fragrant tea.
Therefore, what people oppose is not the amazing style of writing, but the glitz under the amazing style of writing.
So, what is smooth and thick? This is also a description of the style of writing, involving content, or just writing habits. Smooth means smooth, don't beat around the bush, if you have something to say, just say it, don't pretend to be mysterious. This naturally does not produce a sense of narrative surprise. Corresponding to the above writing method, it is to give up all kinds of whimsy and rhetorical devices and take fluency and understandability as the first priority.
This is the most representative in Bai Juyi's later poems. When Bai Juyi is old, he must read it to the old lady before he can be qualified. That is to say, it is a good work to let everyone know that he does not play with the ostentatious literati. His style has been highly praised by later generations and the Japanese people, and it is the gospel of low-educated groups. Therefore, his followers are numerous and become a style feature, which is called "Xiangshan Style".
Known as "Xiangshan style", this kind of poem is straightforward and concise. On the contrary, the "Kunxi Style" appeared in the Northern Song Dynasty, which represented a large number of allusions and a complicated and exquisite poetic style. This is the contrast between poetic style and writing style. Who is more popular? Of course, it is the "Xiangshan Wind" with a wider audience.
But is a work with fluent writing necessarily heavy? I can't say that Yang Wanli's "sincere style", which developed later, is of course fluent compared with the "Jiangxi Poetry School" born out of Huang Tingjian, but it pays attention to liveliness, naturalness and humor, and can't be described as "heavy". Moreover, if the "Xiangshan style" is not well controlled, it is easy to enter the vulgar stream, such as "Jianghu Poetry School" and even doggerel.
Smooth and smooth, but not heavy.
Adding "massiness" to poetry mainly depends on the addition of content. It needs rich content, broad vision and sufficient arguments, which gives people a heavy overall impression. Poems with rich content will appear frivolous, shocking and heavy if they are over-decorated and expressed with amazing "writing style".
So fluency is not necessarily heavy, but it must be smooth.
The lack of content is actually an empty shelf. Some Song poems are like this. They talked a lot of empty truths in fluent language, with no actual content. It's all empty after reading it. Although it feels heavy, it is actually vanity.
The reader's eyes are sharp. This kind of purely ostentatious article, whether stunning or heavy, will eventually be abandoned.
This comes down to another problem of literary and artistic creation.
Whether it's amazing (I'm tired of reading it anyway) or heavy (always putting on airs), how much do these two styles of writing, even if they are both rigid and flexible, account for the quality of an article?
The additive effect of writing on good articles is there, but it is limited.
The decisive factor of an article is the content of words and the expression of true feelings.
Whether it is poetry, prose, argumentative essay, novel or masterpiece, its ultimate goal is to express the true feelings of the creator to readers through different means (genres), thus arousing readers' admiration and recognition.
In other words, no matter what genre the article is, in the final analysis, it is an argumentative paper to convince readers. In short, something is the argument, and revealing the true feelings is the only means to impress readers.
As for what style to use to reveal the true feelings, there is not much difference between a good article and a good author. If it is a short and pithy work, the novel and amazing techniques will make readers feel fresh, while if it is a big work, this frequent jumping style will only make readers feel very tired when they want to understand your true creative meaning.
Therefore, for great writers who create great works, amazing writing is far from being so smooth and heavy.
We might as well tell the truth, express our true feelings through words with substantial contents, and really leave a long impression on readers. This is the style and characteristics of a great writer.
Writing an article is nothing more than having something to say, being clear and exquisite. Doing the first two points well is a good article, and it is even better to do the third point further. Exquisiteness is the characteristic of writing.
Therefore, writing is actually in the least important position for readers' perception of a literary work.
Only readers can judge these styles and characteristics, and it is also the readers who have made creators and eliminated and selected great writers.
After all, most readers just like smooth and heavy writing.
