The University of Leuven was founded in 1425. 1835 was renamed as Rijks Universiteit Leuven (RUL, 18 15- 1835) and 1968. Due to the Dutch-speaking and French-speaking areas of Belgium,
KU Leuven kept its original site in the Dutch-speaking area of Belgium for hundreds of years, while UCL moved to the French-speaking area of Belgium, which was called French Catholic University of Leuven.
Newly established
1425 is the jubilee of the church. On the proposal of John, the fourth generation Duke of Brabant, Pope Pope Martin V established the Catholic University of Leuven by decree on February 9th, 65438. The early professors of Leuven University mainly came from Paris University, Cologne University and Vienna University, and there were liberal arts schools, law schools and medical schools.
1432, adding a seminary. Later, the scale gradually expanded, and the academic prestige was also significantly improved. Many famous scholars also come here to teach.
The Renaissance
Erasmus, an adult writer in16th century, taught at Leuven University. In 15 17, he founded three language colleges to study Hebrew, Latin and Greek, which made Leuven University the center of European humanism research at that time. The reformist Pope Hadrian VI is also a professor of Leuven.
The philosopher Eustace Lipsius also taught here for many years. The scientific tradition of the University of Leuven originated from the mathematician Fritchis, who trained many scientists, such as the cartographer Mercator, whose cartographic method is still in use today. Dodoens, a botanist, and Vesaliua Uss, the father of modern anatomy, also studied or taught in Leuven.
When the University of Leuven was founded, it coincided with the prosperity of Belgium and the rapid development of the university. But later Belgium experienced the rule of Spanish Empire, Austria, French Empire and Dutch Kingdom.
During the Spanish rule, a religious war broke out in the Flemish region of the Netherlands and Belgium, and the University of Leuven was seriously damaged by the war. During the period of Austrian rule, the education system was deeply influenced by Austria and the system was relatively rigid.
