Does anyone know the relevant provisions on de facto marriage in the British 1973 Marriage Procedure Law?
According to English common law and marriage law of 1949, both religious marriage and secular marriage are legally recognized. Religious marriage means that after a man and a woman hold a wedding ceremony presided over by a priest and attended by at least two witnesses in the church, the marriage has legal effect. Secular marriage has legal effect after the marriage ceremony after both parties apply to the registrar of their domicile and obtain the marriage certificate from the registrar. In Britain, anyone who has lived together for more than 4 years and has children is a de facto marriage. When they break up, they are regarded as registered marriages on an equal footing. From this, we can see that Britain restricts its "single style" with receptionism: young people in Britain advocate freedom and don't want to be bound by their families, so many young people in Britain live together without getting married.
