Since its establishment, the research laboratory has successively undertaken the national key scientific and technological projects in the Eighth Five-Year Plan, the Ninth Five-Year Plan and the Tenth Five-Year Plan, two national "863" projects and 10 national natural science foundation projects, and has also undertaken a number of horizontal projects in cooperation with scientific research institutes and enterprises. It has contributed to the development and utilization of natural graphite resources and deep processing technology in China, and has successively completed the development, preparation and pilot test of reinforced flexible graphite composites, as well as the application of expanded graphite in absorbing heavy oil and treating trauma. At present, the direction of the laboratory mainly focuses on two research fields: energy materials and environmental protection materials. In the field of energy storage materials, the applications of natural graphite and synthetic carbon materials in lithium ion secondary batteries, fuel cells and supercapacitors are mainly studied. In the field of environmental protection materials, the application of porous graphite materials and porous carbon materials in water treatment and indoor air purification is mainly studied.
The main research work in the laboratory includes: ① Graphite research: preparation of low-sulfur expanded graphite and flexible graphite, research on super-adsorption behavior and regeneration technology of porous graphite for viscous organic liquid, research on stealth materials and mechanism of expanded graphite, development of bipolar plates of graphite-based fuel cells, development of natural microcrystalline graphite and flake graphite as cathode materials of lithium-ion secondary batteries, and research on nuclear graphite. ② Other research: research on cathode materials of lithium ion batteries, preparation of porous carbon materials and their adsorption laws for volatile organic compounds and corrosive gases, basic physical and chemical problems in the reaction between natural porous minerals and carbon, evaluation and control technology of indoor air quality, research on the formation process of carbon nano-pores in supercritical environment, research on direct methanol fuel cells, research on carbon electrode supercapacitors, research on carbon nanotube stealth materials and so on.
After more than ten years of technical reserves, the laboratory has a complete set of equipment for preparing expanded graphite, flexible graphite, porous carbon materials and pore structure control technology, ordinary activation and supercritical activation devices, adsorption systems, indoor air evaluation systems and so on. There are 3 professors, 3 associate professors, lecturer 1 person and engineer 1 person in the laboratory.
The laboratory won the third prize of 1993 national invention (preparation of expandable graphite by anodic oxidation) and the first prize of technical invention of China Silicate Society of China Building Materials Industry Association in 2006 (deep processing technology of natural graphite and its application research). The laboratory has domestic and international invention patents 14 (authorized 10) on the deep processing technology and application of natural graphite, including 2 American invention patents (authorized), 2 new utility model patents (authorized 1) and 7 provincial-level scientific and technological achievements appraisal. Using these innovative technologies with independent intellectual property rights, we have developed six new materials, including high-quality expandable graphite materials, porous graphite materials, flexible graphite bipolar plate materials, graphite anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, graphite conductive materials for high-performance batteries, and graphite electromagnetic wave absorption and shielding materials. Some of these new materials have been industrialized, and some have good market prospects. The results of this project have remarkable economic and social benefits, which provide a technical basis for the modernization of China's graphite industry. He published 20 papers in international magazines and 60 papers in Chinese journals.
