Brief introduction of Qian Zhongshu
Qian Zhongshu (1910-1998), a researcher and writer of modern literature, was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu. Because when he was one year old, he grabbed a book and named it "Zhongshu".
Qian Zhongshu was born in a family of poets and calligraphers. He was educated in traditional classics and history since childhood. He was good at Chinese and English in middle school, but he did badly in math and other sciences. When I applied for Tsinghua, my math score was only 15. But because of my outstanding achievements in Chinese and English, especially English, I got full marks. 65,438+0929, admitted to Tsinghua University Foreign Languages Department. During this period, he studied hard and was widely exposed to the cultural and academic achievements of all countries in the world. 1933 graduated from university. 1935 married writer and translator Jiang Yang. In the same year, he obtained the qualification of a foreign student at public expense, studied in the English Department of Oxford University for two years, and then studied French literature at the University of Paris for one year. 1938 returned to China. He has taught in several universities.
Qian Zhongshu made a thorough study of China's history, philosophy and literary classics. At the same time, he never stopped reading and studying western literature, philosophy and psychology, and wrote many prestigious academic works. His prose and novels are also excellent, especially the novel Fortress Besieged, which is brilliant and full of metaphors, and is widely known.
Qian Zhongshu was clever since childhood, but his talent was mainly manifested in literature. He likes to play freely as he pleases, especially he doesn't want to do logical reasoning step by step, so he hates math, science and chemistry. Qian Zhongshu began to like English after entering middle school. Qian Zhongshu's middle school is a missionary school run by the Anglican Church in the United States, and most of the courses are taught in English. His English is very good, but he never attends English classes, reads English textbooks or takes notes in class. But look down at the original novel in a foreign language. So his English is almost entirely self-taught, which fully shows his unique language talent. Despite his good academic performance, Qian Zhongshu is indeed a bit "crazy" in his life. For example, he can't tell the east, west, north and south, and he can't tell the direction when he goes out; Dressing is either upside down or inside out. The most embarrassing thing is going to physical education class. As a team leader, his English password is quite loud and accurate, but he doesn't know what to do. I shouted the right password, but I was confused and couldn't stand up. I often make the whole class burst into laughter, but I am puzzled. Smart but often "confused" is the elusive Qian Zhongshu.
Qian Zhongshu is knowledgeable and has an amazing memory. When studying in Tsinghua, he was called Tsinghua's "three gifted scholars" together with Wu Han and Xia Nai. Contact with the elderly in Chen Yan illustrates this point. Chen Yan, the No.1 Stone Heritage, was one of the "three great poets" in the late Qing Dynasty, and occupied an important position in the poetry circle at that time. Old Shi said little to poets and scholars at that time, but he respected Qian Zhongshu all the more. Every winter and summer vacation, Qian Zhongshu returns to Wuxi from Tsinghua, and the old people in Stone invite him to his home. On one occasion, Shi Yilao talked about Wang Yun, a great poet in the late Qing Dynasty: "Wang Yun is extremely low in character and ugly in appearance. What does Brother Shi know? " Qian Zhongshu said to him, "It should be a dwarf." Shi Yi smiled and said, "How do you know?" Qian Zhongshu said: "When Wang died, there was a funny elegy in the Shanghai newspaper,' Learn to be rich in literature and be like Wu Dalang' to win it." Stone old man nodded and said yes. He also said that Wang Yun's works are only good, but his poems are rarely desirable. He only used some sentences in Shi Shi Yi Shi Hua, but he can't remember which ones. Qian Zhongshu immediately replied: "It seems to be' I am ashamed to carry a dagger alone, it is really a mountain'". Stone old man can't help but marvel: "Shixiong's memory is really good!"
As a famous writer and scholar, Mr. Qian Zhongshu's achievements have attracted worldwide attention. In his later years, Qian Zhongshu closed the door to thank guests, indifferent to fame and fortune, and upright and upright, which was praised by the world. A foreign journalist once said that he had two wishes when he came to China: one was to see the Great Wall of Wan Li, and the other was to see Qian Zhongshu. He regards Qian Zhongshu as a symbol of China culture. There is also a foreign journalist who wants to interview Qian Zhongshu because he saw his Fortress Besieged. He called many times and finally found Qian Zhongshu. Qian Zhongshu refused the request for an interview on the phone, saying, "If you feel good after eating an egg, why do you need to know the chicken that laid it?" CCTV opened a popular column "The Son of the East" for the public. Many people are desperate to get in and are proud of their "elegant demeanor", but when the program producer tried to interview Qian Zhongshu, he resolutely refused. A famous American university wants to invite him to give a lecture for half a year, once every two weeks for 40 minutes, about eight hours, with a reward of $654.38 +0.6 million, but Qian Zhongshu is unmoved. Others wrote in Le Monde: China is entitled to the Nobel Prize in Literature, and Qian Zhongshu is the only one. Qian Zhongshu not only refused to accept this evaluation, but also wrote an article in Guangming Daily questioning Nobel Prize in Literature's impartiality.
1998 12 19 at 7: 38 am, Mr. Qian Zhongshu died of illness in Beijing at the age of 88. According to Mr. Qian Zhongshu's last wish, everything was simple, and the body was sent away by two or three relatives. No mourning ceremony, no ashes, flower baskets and wreaths, and solemn farewell. On the day of cremation, only more than 20 people were sent off at the scene, including Qian Zhongshu's son-in-law, grandson and granddaughter, as well as his students, classmates and some friends. Others came voluntarily after hearing about it. Jiang Yang, a famous scholar and widow of Qian Zhongshu, put a small purple forget-me-not and white rose on Qian Zhongshu's body. When the door of the crematorium closed, she was advised to leave. She said, "No, I'll stand for another two minutes." There are faint tears in her eyes. After Qian Zhongshu's body was cremated, his ashes were scattered nearby according to his last wishes. "Such a great scholar represents an era. If everyone knows, there may be thousands of people coming from overseas? " Mr Xue from the Institute of Foreign Languages of China Academy of Social Sciences said, "Qian Zhongshu has left, so let's read his book. Live in the book first. "
