Research Paper on ESP Teaching in Graded College English Teaching

College English learning is the most important stage in the process of English learning. Before that, all the English teaching we received was exam-oriented teaching, which was conducted to enable us to successfully pass the college entrance examination. After entering the university, all this has changed, and the purpose of our teaching has shifted from theory to practical application. At present, in order to distinguish students with different English proficiency gradients, China implements a graded teaching model of college English. With reasonable grading, we can teach them in a targeted way. This kind of targeted teaching is what we call ESP teaching. In this paper, we will discuss all aspects of ESP teaching to meet the needs of China's national development and students' own growth.

College English graded teaching is a great breakthrough in China's higher education. By grading students, we can better understand their English level and ability to learn English, and further classify students' learning priorities to cultivate a group of students with English professional knowledge. This kind of teaching is what we are going to talk about today, ESP teaching based on college English grading teaching. Through the study of this teaching mode, we will be able to re-understand the future development direction of China's higher education and lay a solid foundation for cultivating more and better talents in China.

First, the advantages of ESP teaching in university grading teaching

(A) the meaning of ESP teaching

ESP is the abbreviation of specific properties, which means EnglishforSpecificpurposes. In our country, it is very necessary to popularize this teaching mode. Before this model was popularized, college English education in China was basically a form. The teacher didn't teach the students well and didn't study hard. Everyone's goal is simple: pass CET-4. This is also a common problem in China's overall education system. All the study seems to be for the exam. Without exams, there is no motivation to study. Many students who just went to college are complaining about why the English I learned after attending 12 is useless in college. Why do I feel that my English level is getting worse and worse when I study English in college? In fact, these are the disadvantages brought by the previous college English education system. Because everyone comes to the same university from different provinces and has different grades, the English level must be very different. However, the previous college English teaching did not pay attention to this point. This ineffective English education system was implemented for all students, which led some students with high English level to disdain listening and continue to learn English. Some students with low English level gave up on themselves and lost interest in English learning, so their English level naturally could not be improved. The ESP teaching system we are currently implementing is based on the graded teaching of college English. After students enter the university, the first thing they have to face is the graded examination of college English. In this exam, students will be assigned to different levels of English teaching classes according to their grades, and each level of English teaching class will make suitable teaching plans for the students in this class to ensure that students can get English teaching suitable for their own level. After placement, the school will provide students with unique English teaching according to their needs. For example, students majoring in international trade can learn targeted business English. For those who study tourism management, we will teach them some knowledge of tourism English. For medical students, we will make them work harder on medical English. In this way, every student can get the most beneficial English teaching for his future development. The S in ESP can be reflected to some extent. This is the basic meaning of ESP teaching. According to the different purposes of different students using English, we should carry out targeted English teaching to realize students' professional development and provide high-quality professionals for the country.

(2) ESP teaching contributes to students' lifelong development.

English is the most common language in the world and an important medium for people to communicate with the world. A person's English level will determine the size of her development space to a certain extent. However, in the past, college English teaching in China often didn't improve students' English level at all, on the contrary, it would lead students to lose interest in English learning, and then give up English learning, laying a huge hidden danger for his lifelong development. Besides, that kind of teaching, even if it can learn something, is only some very general things, and can not be applied to students' professional study and real life. ESP teaching can solve these problems. ESP teaching is aimed at students with different needs and levels. It can effectively improve students' practicality in learning English, make them realize the importance of learning English, thus stimulating students' interest in learning English and benefiting their lifelong development. If we still adopt the old English teaching mode in the past, it is impossible for students to have any interest in learning English, let alone learn some English skills that will benefit him for life. One of the characteristics of ESP is pertinence. To enable non-English majors to have access to a large amount of English professional knowledge, they can choose English learning content with higher benefits for their future development. In this way, students can not only realize the necessity of learning English, but also deeply understand their major and future career direction through English, which can be described as killing two birds with one stone. Theoretically speaking, students who have received ESP English teaching will have more advantages in the future job competition, because they can apply English to their own professional fields, thus eliminating the obstacles to international integration. In addition, when they really devote themselves to the work of professional posts, they will also get more promotion opportunities and more opportunities to participate in foreign exchanges because of their excellent professional English level, that is, they will have more opportunities to exercise themselves and improve their abilities in all aspects. In other words, ESP teaching contributes to students' lifelong development, which should be beyond doubt.

(C) ESP teaching is conducive to the improvement of English education in China.

ESP teaching can improve students' interest in learning English, thus prompting them to face college English learning with greater enthusiasm, which is conducive to their lifelong development. Moreover, ESP English teaching has also impacted China's English education model to some extent and stimulated the improvement of English education in China. Before ESP was born, all college English teaching modes in China were indiscriminate teaching. Is to gather all the students in a room and talk to a teacher. Have you asked the teacher? I did it. As for the students, they just play, sleep and have no sense of seriousness in class. This boring teaching mode is the continuation of English teaching mode in primary education in China, and it is not even as effective as English education in junior and senior high schools. In junior high school and senior high school, students learn English for only one purpose, that is, exams. The pressure of exams forced them to learn English. Although they are reluctant, we have to mention that the effect of this kind of education is still good. At least they are comfortable when they meet the college entrance examination. When I arrived at the university, the test pressure was reduced a lot, or even no pressure. Many people come to college just for a diploma, as long as they pass the exam or something. They will pin their hopes on the English knowledge they have learned in junior high school and senior high school, and often the results will not disappoint them. But what they don't realize is that English, as a communication medium, will play an important role in their future work and life. If they didn't learn any English in college, but their English level dropped because of long-term neglect, it would be extremely unfavorable for their lifelong development. ESP teaching fundamentally solves this problem. ESP teaching mode is a new English teaching mode developed on the basis of college English grading teaching. This teaching mode will focus on imparting some professional English knowledge to students to meet their future work and life needs. The perfection and popularization of this teaching mode is a great progress in English education and education system in China. It will change the long-standing examination-oriented atmosphere of English education in China, and remind people that English is actually a tool for communication, not the scope of examination. This is also conducive to the improvement of English teaching level in China. The successful promotion of this model will break the original rules of English education at all stages and make English education in primary schools, junior high schools and senior high schools look brand-new. The fundamental purpose of English education is to cultivate a group of talents who can smoothly integrate with the international community, rather than a group of learning enthusiasts who can only take exams. From this perspective, ESP teaching is indeed conducive to the improvement of English education in China.

Second, the current problems in ESP teaching in China

(A) the school classification of students is not accurate enough

ESP teaching is based on college English graded teaching. In other words, ESP teaching cannot achieve good results without the support of graded teaching. After a period of development, ESP teaching in China has made some achievements, but there are still some shortcomings in this respect. The inaccurate grading of students by schools has become a major obstacle to the development of ESP teaching. The significance of graded teaching lies in distinguishing students who attach different importance to English in different provinces and have different English proficiency and English learning ability. This classification will make the English level of all students in an English class roughly the same, which is convenient for teachers to carry out unified teaching. At present, colleges and universities in China do not pay enough attention to English grading, and many schools are not accurate enough in grading students. There are several reasons for this problem: students' insufficient attention is one of them. Many students think that the first exam is often not that important. The students have just spent a long vacation and learning English has long been forgotten by them. I didn't pay much attention to the English test, and I didn't review it well. I didn't find my own sense of English language, so naturally I won't play my due level in the English proficiency test. There are also some students who think that entering the advanced English class will face more difficult exams and bear greater learning pressure, so they deliberately do not exert their full strength to enter the English class slightly lower than their actual level. All these factors lead to the inaccuracy of college English grading. What the students have done will bring them lifelong regret. In addition, schools should also be responsible for the inaccuracy of English scores. Schools generally don't pay much attention to the importance of English grade examination, and think that I can teach me all kinds of students. Therefore, they are often not so serious in the process of preparing for the exam. In many schools, the exam questions are evenly matched, and it depends on luck to do well. This is also very unfavorable to the accurate grading of college English. These inaccurate results will have a bad influence on ESP teaching in the future. If high-level students are divided into low-level classes, they will have an absolute advantage in class competition and thus lose interest in learning English. Some students who skip the advanced edition will gradually find themselves unable to keep up with the pace of English learning of teachers and other students, and gradually lose their confidence in learning. In either case, these two situations will have a negative impact on the continuous promotion of ESP English teaching mode in China.

(B) students' lack of understanding of ESP teaching

ESP teaching is also a kind of teaching, which also needs the cooperation of teachers and students to be successfully completed. As a new thing, ESP has not been taken seriously by everyone, which leads to the lack of initiative of students in ESP teaching. Many students will say that they can't adapt to this new teaching mode. When they are used to sleeping in class and playing mobile phones in other classes, it is basically impossible for them to learn some knowledge that is beneficial to their lifelong development in class. This is reflected in many aspects. As mentioned above, in order to avoid the high-pressure learning environment, many students will take the initiative to take fewer exams and enter English classes far below their own level. It is hateful and sad that they gave up their lifelong development opportunities for temporary relaxation. Not only that, some students who have begun to accept ESP teaching are completely unaware of the importance of English. They still study college English in the same way as other subjects, if they do. They still sleep in class, play mobile phones and whisper to each other. When the teacher asks them questions, they will quietly ask the students around them or simply give up answering. Over time, teachers' enthusiasm for them will gradually dissipate, and they will also lose this good opportunity to improve themselves. The publicity of ESP in the school is not enough, and many students have entered the class before they understand what ESP is. This is not conducive to their performance in the graded exams, and it is also not conducive to stimulating their enthusiasm in English classes. In a word, students' lack of enthusiasm for ESP teaching is a big problem, which damages the promotion of this teaching mode and students' lifelong development. The reason for this problem lies in the students themselves on the one hand, and in the school on the other. Only with the concerted efforts of all parties in Qi Xin, can the established English teaching tasks be completed, so that students can get lifelong development and the country can get outstanding talents.

(C) ESP teaching staff is insufficient

ESP teaching, as a teaching mode, needs a large number of teachers to ensure its smooth progress. ESP teaching divides students into many classes of different grades, and also carries out targeted English teaching for these classes. English teaching has many aspects, such as business English, legal English and police English. These professional English generally require teachers to have both English literacy and a lot of professional knowledge before teaching. Moreover, graded teaching also requires teachers to have the ability to take care of students at different levels. These requirements make it more and more difficult for us to find suitable teachers. Many colleges and universities have not vigorously promoted this ESP teaching mode. One of the important reasons is that teachers are far from meeting this requirement. In order to solve this problem, the state has issued a large number of policies to support the development of ESP teaching and attract professionals to join ESP teaching. But these are not enough. The cultivation of such professionals not only needs a lot of financial support, but also needs a long period. In other words, ESP teaching in China will face the shortage of teachers for a long time to come. However, we can also solve this problem through various efforts. A large number of relevant talents can be introduced from abroad to engage in teaching work. Of course, this requires a lot of financial support. It can also speed up the training cycle of relevant talents and urge them to enter relevant positions for teaching as soon as possible. At the same time, we should vigorously promote this ESP teaching mode to students, colleges and the whole society, so that people are full of expectations for it and are willing to see its development, so as to truly promote it comprehensively. With the support of the whole society, ESP teaching will naturally develop rapidly, and the shortage of teachers will certainly be solved soon.

(D) Lack of teaching materials

ESP English teaching, like other English teaching, needs some professional teaching equipment and teaching props. Textbooks are one of the most important teaching props. At present, ESP English teaching in China is still in the primary stage, and many kinds of English textbooks are not comprehensive enough. There are some textbooks that simply fill in the blanks, written by some unknown little writers, and they want to seek personal gain by this tide of comprehensive promotion. There are still some textbooks, written by famous writers, but due to the rush of time, the author has not had time to carefully consider them, and there will be a lot of mistakes and omissions in the textbooks, which will bring a certain degree of confusion to teachers' teaching and students' self-study. Besides, there are still some problems in many textbooks. Take police English as an example. In police English teaching, we often need to make some preparations for English theory before we can formally enter the learning process. However, at present, a large number of specialized English words are often directly thrown out in the teaching materials about police English on the market for everyone to remember. Not only that, but also the details are not well done. For example, dealing with traffic accidents and criminal cases will require different dialogue content, and a template cannot be applied. If these aspects can't be systematically taught, students can't understand them at all. In order to solve this problem, we need the joint efforts of many parties. Some talents with professional quality in this field should boldly create teaching materials, first meet the current teaching needs, and then gradually revise them to meet higher teaching needs. Publishers should strictly control teaching materials, avoid low-level text errors and ensure the quality of publications. Teachers should actively study the use of teaching materials and provide useful suggestions for the compilation of teaching materials. In the process of using textbooks, students should be brave enough to question, put forward their own questions and help the textbooks to be further rectified. Only when all aspects take action can our ESP English textbooks be further improved.

Three. Concluding remarks

ESP teaching is a new English teaching mode developed on the basis of college English grading teaching. It changes the generality of previous English teaching and improves students' English literacy from a professional perspective. On the one hand, this teaching mode promotes the ideological innovation in the field of English teaching in China, on the other hand, it also provides a good guarantee for students' lifelong development. However, ESP English teaching in China has just started, and there are still some problems such as students' ignorance, teachers' inability to teach and incomplete teaching materials. However, we believe that as long as all parties can act and try to solve all the problems in the process of ESP promotion, ESP professional English teaching will certainly achieve remarkable results.
