Study on early soil erosion in Renchengtong
From 1922 to 1927, Ren Chengtong, Shen et al. Follow Dr. W.C. Rodmin of the United States to carry out scientific research on soil erosion. In order to study the source and prevention methods of the Yellow River sediment, they have conducted investigation and study on vegetation and soil erosion in Shandong, Henan, Shanxi, Shaanxi and Gansu for more than six years, and conducted soil erosion experiments in Qingdao Forest Farm and Yongning successively to illustrate the soil erosion process. From 1924 to 1926, they set up runoff and sediment experimental plots in Qinyuan, Fangshan, Dongzhai, Ningwu and Qingdao forest farms in Shandong Province, respectively, to observe the changes of soil erosion on hillsides with different forest vegetation and vegetation coverage under different rainstorm conditions. During the period of 1926, they conducted a study on "Forest and Soil Erosion" in Huaihe River Basin. At that time, the theme and purpose of the study were "how to control the Yellow River disaster" and "how to use forests to prevent the Yellow River disaster and famine". In a short period of six years, they visited the Yellow River Basin, North China and Northwest China for five times, and successively wrote papers such as Erosion and Water Disaster in the Yellow River Basin, Sediment Problem in the Huaihe River in the Eyes of Forest People, Forest Destruction and Slope Erosion in Shanxi Province, and Relationship between Deforestation and Slope Erosion in Shanxi Province. Most of these papers were written in English under the guidance of W.C. Rodmin, translated into Chinese by Ren Chengtong, Shen, Sun and Huang Ruicai, and published in Jin Lingguang, Jinling Weekly, Agriculture and Forestry Bulletin and Agriculture and Forestry Newspaper of Jinling University. These works are the earliest scientific research results of loess soil erosion in modern China, and also enrich the world soil and water conservation science at that time. For example, the article "Factors Affecting Storm Runoff and Soil Erosion" written by them based on experimental results and investigations is the beginning of observing and studying soil erosion methods in runoff plots in China. In the article "Dr. Luo Demin and Soil and Water Conservation in China", Xu Guohua said that it is unprecedented to use such a scientific method to measure soil and water loss under different conditions in the field, and pointed out: "The article" Factors Affecting Storm Runoff and Soil and Water Loss "read by him (W.C. Luo Demin) at the third Pacific Conference held in Tokyo, Japan in 1926 is the first in international academic history. Because all the articles are explained with specific data, which is impressive, greatly improves everyone's understanding of soil erosion and is well received by the participants. Since then, the test methods for measuring soil erosion under different conditions have been widely adopted by countries all over the world.
