So how to realize automatic numbering? This needs to be achieved through the "title" function that comes with Word.
Step 1: Select the picture or table to be numbered, select Reference-Insert Caption-New Label in the menu bar, enter the label name, and click OK. Subsequent automatic numbering will start with this label name. If the label name is "Figure", the number will be similar to "Figure xx".
Step 2, return to the subtitle menu, click on the number and set the number format, which can be set as Arabic numerals or Chinese characters. According to the format requirements of the paper.
If the chart number needs to include the chapter number, check Include Chapter Number, then set the chapter start style and use the separator in the drop-down menu. The rendering effects are as follows: "Figure 2. 1" and "Table 3 -5".
At this point, many tutorials tell you that you can start inserting numbers, but if students have not set the title style or the numbering scheme of the title style correctly before, they will encounter many problems in actual operation. For example, Word will pop up a window, prompting that the document does not contain chapter numbers:
Some students may be confused. My thesis clearly contains the first chapter and the second chapter. How come I don't have a chapter number? If they ignore the prompt and click OK at this time, they will find that Word prompts in the inserted number: "Error! There is no text in the document with the specified style.
This is because we don't set chapter titles according to style. The function of automatic catalog generation and chart numbering in Word needs to set the title style in advance. Select the appropriate heading style in Start Style to apply to the heading of each chapter. If there is no ready-made style to meet the requirements, you can refer to our previous article to create a new title style (how to make a title format in paper typesetting).
After setting the title style, try to insert the chart code again. Students may find that this time Word will not report the previous mistakes, but insert the number "Figure 0- 1". It's clearly a picture with chapter 1. Why do the numbers start with 0?
This is because we don't have a title-style numbering scheme, so we need to set it according to the multi-level list button on the start tab of the window prompt that just popped up. Select to define a new multilevel list:
Modify the format and style of each level number. First determine the numbering style of this level, such as 1, 2, 3 or I, II, III, etc. Then enter the format of the number in the format item. For example, the primary title can be set to "1 chapter" and the secondary title can be set to "1. 1". Note that the number here is highlighted in gray, indicating that the number is dynamically generated according to the style settings.
Next, click the More button in the lower left corner to link the level to the corresponding title style by linking the level to the style drop-down menu. And use the same method to complete the setting of secondary and tertiary titles.
At this point, we have finished the preparation of title style and numbering link, and finally we can start inserting chart numbers.
Select the chart to be numbered, and select Reference-Insert caption, so that Word can correctly insert figures such as "Figure 1. 1" and "Table II-3" according to the settings.
Finally, if the chart is added, deleted or moved after the numbering is completed, how can the numbering be automatically updated? We just need to select the full text, and then click the right mouse button on any number to select the update field.
