Graphic design is a career that many people like. Here I bring you five kinds of mistakes that graphic designers often make. Welcome to read!
1. Pitch size debugging
△ The spacing should not be too tight or too big.
When you enter a paragraph of text in the software, the computer will set the spacing of the text by default, including word spacing and line spacing. Computers don't need to adapt to text as designers do. If your text is too compact and the text is almost next to each other, you need to make adjustments yourself. Similarly, if words are too far apart, readability will be reduced. Beginners often make the mistake of setting the text spacing too large, or directly adopting the default value set by the computer. I heard that some designers say that large spacing appears to have a sense of design, which is typically designed for design.
Avoid "going your own way"
△ Avoid the appearance of "going its own way"
Additional increase or decrease in word spacing can be used to define or emphasize a concept, but these are exceptions and should be used with caution. In order to achieve a good visual effect, the font designer of the software program will carefully set the spacing between words of different font sizes. However, the combination between words is not always reasonable. For example, you need to be careful when adjusting kerning, because slightly increasing the font or narrowing kerning may affect the stability of the page, or make the last word in one line fall on the next line to avoid "each line is its own" (words at the end of a paragraph or words at the beginning or end of a column of text).
3. Pay attention to the collocation of words.
△ The combination of capital letters is complex and changeable.
For another example, in capital English letters, the shapes of capital letters themselves are different, and their combinations will be complicated and changeable. Compared with circular letters such as O, Q or A, V, Y, W, which are composed of diagonal strokes, when we put letters such as I, J, E, F together, these single letters need more spacing. For example, when "A" and "V" are put together, the spacing needs to be adjusted to make up for the larger negative space between them, because these two letters occupy their relative space and have different widths.
△ Manually adjust the spacing between words (press and hold alt key+left and right arrow keys in AI)
Letter spacing adjustment allows you to manually reduce or increase letter spacing. Pay close attention to the increase or decrease of word spacing after adjustment. In short, don't trust computers completely, but trust your own experience and vision.
4. "I" word detection method
△ letter "I" detects word spacing
Another way to measure kerning is to use the lowercase letter "I", but it depends on the sensitivity to design. In some English fonts, more spaces than the lowercase letter "I" will make reading difficult, but again, design is not like mathematics, there is no standard answer, only suitable and inappropriate, and accumulating experience can naturally improve the acuity.
5. Two layout styles
△ Because the two ends are aligned, the word spacing is different and confusing.
Spacing in plain text also needs to be carefully checked, and typesetting style plays an important role. For continuous reading, there are generally two settings, one is alignment at both ends and the other is left alignment. After the two ends are aligned, the kerning of different lines will be different, because the words will be lengthened to meet the alignment requirements. The kerning may become too large (as shown above), especially if the line length is too small or the font size is too large. You can use hyphens to adjust the font to make it as balanced as possible, but it is best not to use too many hyphens in a paragraph, generally only 1-2. The advantage of this is that you can arrange a paragraph regularly, but the disadvantage is that the spacing will become longer, which will affect reading.
△ Break the line by yourself, and the left back is equally spaced and smooth.
Setting the text to the left ensures consistent kerning. The disadvantage of this arrangement is that it will cause serious unevenness at the end of the line. You can break a line that is too long first, and then fine-tune the kerning constantly, which has an advantage-you can avoid the problem of alignment at both ends of the text. Many designers will tend to use this method.
