CLT originated in Europe, and the commerce and trade in Europe developed rapidly in 1970s. More frequent face-to-face communication puts forward higher requirements for listening and speaking ability, but the traditional classroom teaching based on grammar and translation can no longer meet this demand. CLT teaching emphasizes the functional purpose of communication, such as greeting, apology, invitation, refusal, request, complaint and supplement. Although CLT is a bridge between language function and language form, a language function can be expressed in many forms, and correspondingly, a language form can also express many language functions.

TBLT is a teaching method developed by CLT in recent years. It emphasizes the overall function and practical application of language, and pays attention to students' learning rather than individual knowledge points. Task-based teaching method can cultivate students' comprehensive quality, not just the development of language ability.
