On the Effective Methods of Memorizing English Vocabulary

As we all know, English learning is inseparable from the most basic vocabulary, just as building a tall building is inseparable from bricks and tiles. The first condition is to master a certain number of words. When a certain amount of vocabulary is accumulated, words will form sentences, sentences will form paragraphs, and paragraphs will form articles. However, in the process of English teaching for more than ten years, mastering vocabulary and language rules is the most difficult thing for students every day, especially with the deepening of learning, the amount of old and new knowledge that needs to be memorized and reviewed is increasing, and with the extension of memory time, forgetting begins to appear. Some students began to lack confidence in memorizing vocabulary and gradually gave up learning English. Therefore, how to arrange time scientifically and systematically according to the characteristics of English vocabulary and the relevant laws of memory is the key to learning English well. This paper talks about my own views on my usual teaching experience.

In psychology education, memory is divided into basic processes such as memorization, retention and recall. Human memory is an information processing system, which is divided into three memory stages: the first stage is instantaneous memory, also called sensory memory, which means that external stimuli are transmitted to sensory memory through the input system, and the information only stays for a short time and only maintains a momentary' feeling'. The second stage is short-term memory, when information appears in the form of perception or selective attention. At this time, the characteristics of memory traces are: they will automatically fade over time. The third stage is long-term memory, which is formed in the process of repetition. It has been stored for a long time and will never be forgotten. Because of the individual differences of students, their memory is different, which is not only influenced by innate quality, but also by environment and education, especially the educational methods under the guidance of teachers. Memory is a complex process, which requires us to master the characteristics of memory. By summarizing and classifying the memory materials from the aspects of form, structure and meaning, we can constantly strengthen the memory materials and keep them in mind, so that we can have solid knowledge in our minds and use them flexibly and accurately. The specific method is:

First, cultivate interest, stimulate motivation, and advocate memory on the basis of understanding.

"Interest is the best teacher", and the cultivation of interest is very important in all kinds of learning. Only when students are interested in learning will they take the initiative to learn and remember carefully. Real needs are real needs. The principle of pedagogy points out that memory is based on intelligence, and intellectual activities have the best effect when the mood is high and the concentration is high. This requires us to pay attention to stimulating students' memory motivation, creating a pleasant learning atmosphere and eliminating their fear of memorizing words. Some students begin to remember new words as soon as they come into contact with them, and even if they remember them at that time, they will soon forget them. This requires students to be familiar with the pronunciation and meaning of vocabulary, understand the basic situation of vocabulary, and then memorize it on the basis of understanding, so the effect will be much better. In addition, when speaking texts, telling stories, singing English songs, rehearsing English programs, publishing English wall newspapers, etc. Words that students need to memorize frequently appear, so that students can memorize them naturally in a pleasant atmosphere and always warn students that memorizing words can be done anywhere. At the same time, we should also pay attention to warn students that the memory process is not an independent process and needs to be combined with our listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Second, comprehensive coordination of listening, speaking, reading and writing, and comprehensive coordination of multiple organs.

The memory of English words is actually the process of establishing the connection between sound, form and meaning of words in the cerebral cortex. Before memorizing a word, you must first know how to read it. After reading it, you can close the book and read it again, that is, look back. Read with your eyes and mouth, then read with your back, with your brain, ears and mouth, and then write the letters of this word on your exercise book and desk with your hand or pen. At this time, you combine pronunciation and word form with your hands to realize the use of mouth, hands, eyes, ears and brain. You can not only master the basic spelling rules of words, but also master the comparison of main meaning and incidental meaning, homophones and antonyms. But also find out the internal relationship between the old and new words, the prefix or suffix of compound words, cognates, derivatives and a series of word-formation characteristics, and then perceive the impression, leaving a deep trace in the cerebral cortex, so that instant memory can be transformed into short-term memory and long-term memory.

Third, keep repeating, increase "reproduction" and strive to achieve long-term memory.

I remember more than ten years ago, I asked my teacher, "How can I remember words well?" The teacher once told me, "If you want to remember the words firmly, you must keep repeating them." . Now students often ask me this question, and I will answer them with this sentence taught by my teacher. Some students often ask, "Why do I forget words when I remember them?" It is unrealistic to never forget anything, because what we remember is always disturbed and forgotten. In the process of memory, repeating relevant information is the process of resisting forgetting. In order to prevent forgetting and consolidate memory, we must be familiar with the distribution of these words in teaching materials and classify their frequencies, so as to reproduce them timely, appropriately, moderately, orderly and effectively.

The "forgetting curve" of German psychologist Ebbinghaus shows that the process of forgetting is unbalanced. In the initial stage after memory, forgetting is faster, and then it gradually slows down. According to the law of "fast first, then slow down", the measures of "prevention first, strike while the iron is hot" are taken to remedy in time, so that knowledge can reappear in time before being forgotten. In general, most of the words written on the first day can be kept until the next day. If you can remember and review the consolidation in time the next day, that is, before the first forgetting critical point, you can keep it for three to four days. If you can consolidate them at the second forgetting critical point, you can keep your memory for more than a week. Therefore, we must master the best period to keep memory, reproduce and consolidate, and improve the memory effect.

Scientists' research shows that people have great memory potential. As long as we attach importance to the scientific nature of memory, carefully understand the characteristics and basic laws of memory and master the correct memory methods, our memory ability will be further improved and strengthened, and our ability to remember words and even our ability to learn English will make a qualitative leap.
