Jinan University is the first overseas Chinese university founded by the government in China. It is a key comprehensive university under the "2 1 1 Project" jointly established by the State Council Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, Ministry of Education and Guangdong Province, and directly under the leadership of the State Council Overseas Chinese Affairs Office.

The word "Jin 'an" comes from Shangshu Gong Yu: "The east is gradually in the sea, the west is in quicksand, and the south is combined, which teaches the world." It means facing South Asia and spreading Chinese culture.

The school's predecessor was Jinan School, which was founded by the Qing government in Nanjing on 1906. Later, it moved to Shanghai, and 1927 was renamed as National Jinan University. During his stay in War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, he moved to Jianyang, Fujian. 1946 moved back to Shanghai,1949 merged with Fudan University, Jiaotong University and other universities in August. After the founding of New China, Jinan University was rebuilt in Guangzhou, 1958. Suspended during the Cultural Revolution, 1978 reopened in Guangzhou. In recent years, with the efforts of teachers and students, the discipline construction and strength of the school have been significantly improved.
