What's the difference between argumentative writing and narrative writing?
Narration is a kind of literary style which focuses on narration and description. It mainly expresses a certain central idea by remembering people, narrating, describing scenery and things. Argumentative writing is a style that focuses on discussion. Mainly through discussion to explain the correctness and rationality of the author's views, opinions and opinions, or to refute the absurdity and falsehood of others' views and arguments. Generally speaking, argumentative writing consists of three elements: argument, argument and argument.

Although there is such a difference between narrative and argumentative writing, narrative, argumentative writing and other expressions are not independent of each other. In fact, when writing, all kinds of expressions will be used cross-synthetically because of the need of the central content of the article, but they are biased towards a certain expression. For example, in a narrative, narrative and description are the main content, and there are usually a few lyrical comments from the author to deepen the theme of the article or make the structure more rigorous. This is the narrative discussion in narrative. For another example, in an argumentative essay, while discussion is the main part, sometimes there are some narratives, which make the argumentation method of the article more vivid and achieve the effect of convincing people by reasoning.

In this way, we will encounter such a problem: both styles have narration and discussion, so what are the different characteristics of each other's narration and discussion? How should we distinguish them? We must carefully analyze and master this problem in order to facilitate the smooth progress of Chinese teaching in the future.

We say there is a difference between narrative and argumentative writing. This is mainly manifested in the following points.

First of all, narrative is mainly narrative and description. This shows that "narration" is its main body, and the word "discussion" does not occupy the main position. Argumentative writing is mainly about discussion. This shows that "discussion" is its main expression, and "narration" is its auxiliary means, which does not occupy the main position. For example, Fan Zhongyan's "Yueyang Tower" is a narrative, with scenery and discussion. The article describes the evolution and reconstruction of Yueyang Tower, focusing on the scenic spots of Dongting Lake, and the argumentative words are only a few wonderful and pertinent words. In memory of Bethune, the argumentative paper comments on Comrade Bethune's spirit of internationalism, productism, altruism and superb technology, but few words describe his touching deeds.

Secondly, in the narrative, the narrative is the basis of the article, and the narrative content is rich and realistic, vivid and touching. In the discussion, the narrative is concise. A successful narrative can often reproduce the original vivid features of people, events and scenery, which makes people immersive and touches readers. Therefore, it requires that the narrative content must be rich and vivid, and people, events, scenes and things should be vividly described by using various descriptive techniques. For example, the narrative "Dinner on the Grass" describes in detail the touching scenes of Comrade Zhu De digging wild vegetables to prepare dinner, cooking wild vegetables for dinner and cooking porridge for dinner, reproduces the great image of Comrade Zhu De sharing weal and woe with everyone and caring for the soldiers, and shows the simple and noble character of Comrade Zhu De. Because the author uses the description means such as appearance, language and action, Zhu De's image is vividly portrayed, which makes people feel immersive and vivid.

However, the narrative in the argumentative paper is not as detailed and vivid as that in Dinner on the Grass, but relatively concise and to the point. The content of these narratives only plays an argument role in the argument, and * * * serves the central argument. For example, the story of Wen Tianxiang, who refused to eat the food he picked up, and Wen Yiduo in the argumentative paper "Talking about Gucci" are all very concise and summarized. Because these three models only serve as arguments for the central argument that "we China people have backbone", we have demonstrated the correctness of this central argument from three different angles. Because, do not require detailed, specific and vivid narrative and description.

Thirdly, due to the different writing purposes of the two styles, the status of discussion in the two styles is also different. Narration is to reproduce the original appearance of people, events, scenes and things, so that readers are moved by it. Therefore, discussion cannot be the main body of the article, and it is not necessary to make a full demonstration. The purpose of writing an argumentative essay is to explain the viewpoint and convince the reader of its truth, so the argument becomes the main body of the article and is generally fully demonstrated.

Let's take two articles with different styles as examples to illustrate this problem. For example, the narrative "Yueyang Tower", after describing and describing the scenery, the author naturally expressed his views at the end of the article to pin his ideals and ambitions. This is "worrying about the world first, and enjoying the world later." Because this article is a narrative, narrative and description are its main contents, and discussion can not be the main body of the article, but only plays the role of finishing touch, so the author does not have to argue that "the world is worried first, and the world is happy afterwards." The truth, the article can end with this statement. But the argumentative essay "Be a horse first" is different. It is an article about talents, and discussion becomes the main body of the article. The author puts forward the viewpoint that "you should be a horse first, and you should be a horse that keeps running forward". Different from narrative discussion, this paper will not demonstrate this. Instead, it lists three typical stories of anonymous youth, Liaoning youth and China to fully prove it, and then analyzes the "spirit of thousands of miles" that is more valuable than "traveling thousands of miles a day". The reasoning is powerful and convincing, and the effect of convincing people by reasoning is achieved.

These are the three differences between narrative and argumentative writing. After we understand their differences, we should pay attention to their different characteristics in future writing and use narrative and discussion methods appropriately to write better articles.
