Xie Bailiang loved watching plays and reading books since he was a child, but he failed to go to high school for further study because of the "Cultural Revolution". Since then, Xie Bailiang has returned to his hometown to work, which has provoked a heavy burden of life.

Xie Bailiang took an active part in the activities of literary and art propaganda teams of brigades and communes during the six-year "social university" training of farming in rural areas and carrying bags at loading and unloading stations, and became the penholder of rural theatrical troupes. A series of plays and programs he created were put on the stage and won many awards in the county. He also toured around with big troupes and multi-township troupes, and directly felt the people's desire for cultural festivals. People's wishes and people's likes and dislikes provide the deepest and broadest cultural soil for Xie Bailiang's creative opportunity and the sublimation of aesthetic taste.

Later, under the guidance of teachers such as Fan in the county cultural center, he became one of the more active young creators in Tianmen County. When the national cotton work site meeting was held in Tianmen, the program creation of the large-scale opening ceremony was created by Xie Bailiang. Since then, Xie Bailiang has become a young man carefully cultivated by the County Cultural Bureau.

1In the autumn of 979, Xie Bailiang, who had been in the society for six years, was admitted to Hubei Normal University by tenacious self-study and became a freshman in the Chinese Department.

As a college student, his classical literature, drama literature and English class have always been among the best in his class. Thanks to years of creative practice, Xie Bailiang's writing style is particularly prominent in the class. His composition is usually listed as a model essay for the whole class; His essays, poems and novels were also published in newspapers and magazines, which became the focus of students' attention.

The inertia brought by long-term drama activities has prompted Xie Bailiang to pay more attention to famous dramas. He studies Chinese and foreign dramas seriously. As early as the second grade, he published a long paper "From Pipa to Shirt and Tears" in a magazine, and made a detailed analysis and in-depth evaluation of the works of Ma Zhiyuan, a great composer in Yuan Dynasty. Near graduation, he took Guan Hanqing, a great dramatist in Yuan Dynasty, as the research object of his graduation thesis.

After four years' undergraduate career, Xie Bailiang felt that his knowledge was still very poor, so he decided to apply for master's degrees in Xu Zhongyu and Qi Senhua of East China Normal University to study drama theory in the history of China literary criticism.

Shanghai is the center of the study of China's literary criticism history, but the study of interest is relatively weak. Under the guidance of his tutor, Xie Bailiang sat on the bench for several years, borrowed rare books of ancient famous dramas from Shanghai Library and Beijing Library for many times, and copied many prefaces and postscripts of operas with research value. Finally, he compiled the Preface and Postscript of China Opera with nearly one million words, and on this basis, he wrote An Introduction to the Preface and Postscript of China Opera. After some chapters of the book were published in Guangming Daily, Literary Heritage and other magazines, it opened a door worthy of attention for the study of interest.

After graduating with a master's degree, Xie Bailiang applied for a doctor's degree in the history of Chinese drama in Sun Yat-sen University, and was admitted with good professional results among many candidates. He became a descendant of Wu Mei, a master of modern music research, and a disciple of Wang Qi (Wang Jisi), a master of contemporary China opera research.

During his stay in Shanghai, Xie Bailiang focused on the study of drama theory; During his stay in Guangzhou, he focused on the history of China opera. In this way, he can have a comprehensive understanding of the theory and the development history of Chinese opera.

Under the careful guidance of the master, Xie Bailiang writes more than one drama paper every month. These articles were published in many magazines in China, such as Literary Heritage, and the author won the first prize of the liberal arts research award of the Graduate School of Sun Yat-sen University twice.

After receiving a heavy doctorate in literature, Xie Bailiang came to Shanghai Theatre Academy to teach, and was promoted to associate professor and professor successively, becoming a young scholar in the Ministry of Culture system. During the teaching of Shanghai Opera, Xie Bailiang devoted himself to scientific research, diligently wrote and published various monographs, and gradually formed his own series of studies on the history of drama culture and literature, and successively published monographs such as China Tragedy History, World Tragedy Literature History, China Drama Classification History, China Contemporary Drama Literature History and Great Dramatist Guan Hanqing.

Over the years, Xie Bailiang's academic research has been assisted and supported by North American countries, societies and academic institutions. His research has been included in two national philosophical and social science fund projects, including the Dawn Project in Shanghai, the Young Teachers Fund of Shanghai Education Commission and the key funded projects of Shanghai Publishing Bureau. One was included in the first prize of scientific research by Shanghai Theatre Academy, one was listed as a key scientific research project by Nanjing Normal University, and two were awarded excellent scientific research awards by the National Aesthetic Society, the State Press and Publication Bureau and the National Foreign Literature Society.

Besides writing books, Xie Bailiang also gives lectures in many universities and cultural institutions. He has made special reports on drama culture in universities such as Shanghai Jiaotong University and Wuhan University, and some cultural institutions such as Shanghai Yue Theatre and Ningbo Municipal Bureau of Culture.

In 2008, Xie Bailiang entered the China Theatre Academy to teach and became one of the academic leaders of literature and art related majors. As a master tutor and doctoral tutor, he said that he would lead his disciples to make new achievements for the prosperity of academic culture.

Since the 1990s, Xie Bailiang has gone abroad and visited the University of Macau, the University of Toronto, the University of Fossa, the University of California, Berkeley and Stanford University, explaining China's literary and artistic traditions to some undergraduates and graduate students, and making his own efforts to promote China culture. He also collaborated with some foreign scholars to write and spread China culture to a wider audience through different languages and cultural levels.

Xie Bailiang's overseas scholarship programs include four research scholarship programs: University of Toronto, University of California, Berkeley, Stanford University and American Academic Council. It is these spring rain-like subsidies and mutual encouragement that make Xie Bailiang feel the great responsibility of foreign cultural exchanges and dare not stop.
