The whole story of "plagiarism" in Fudan University

The school reported three academic plagiarism incidents on its website and was praised.

On June 24, 2007, 65438+February 24, 2007, the Academic Standardization Committee of Fudan University posted the notice "No.1 2007" on the campus network, informing the teachers and students of the whole school of the investigation and deliberation conclusions and suggestions for handling three academic plagiarism incidents, which aroused strong repercussions. Fudan University is considered to have the courage to "expose one's family's ugliness".

Postgraduate textbooks are seriously plagiarized.

"No.1 of 2007" reported that since May this year, the Academic Standardization Committee of Fudan University has received three reports of academic irregularities, namely, anonymous reports of serious plagiarism of textbooks compiled by Professor Lu and others from the School of Foreign Languages, anonymous reports of plagiarism of Professor Chi and others from the Otolaryngology Hospital, and reports of plagiarism of two papers by Dr. Ye and his tutor Gu from the School of Information. The Academic Norms Committee of Fudan University conducted corresponding investigation, verification and deliberation according to the relevant requirements, regulations and investigation procedures of the Measures for Handling Academic Norms and Violations in Fudan University (Trial) (hereinafter referred to as the Norms).

The first academic fraud incident was reported by a teacher from the School of Foreign Languages, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics on May 8, 2007. There is a serious plagiarism in Postgraduate English Theses and Practical Writing edited by Professor Lu from the School of Foreign Languages of Fudan University (published by Fudan University Press in 2006). After receiving the report, the Academic Standards Committee of Fudan University investigated the incident, and the results showed that the report was basically true, and the book did have serious violations of academic ethics and norms.

On September 30, 2007, the plenary session of the Academic Standards Committee of Fudan University held that the fact that Professor Lu and several young teachers had seriously copied books published abroad in their textbooks had been investigated clearly, and their plagiarism errors were serious. In this regard, Professor Lu should bear the main responsibility, and other teachers should also bear corresponding responsibilities. It is suggested that the mistakes made by Professor Lu and other four teachers should be informed criticism within a certain range. Professor Lu has reached retirement age and suggested that the Foreign Languages Institute should not renew its employment. At the same time, inform the graduate school and the publishing house of this matter, and suggest that the publishing house destroy all the stored books and take back the published books as much as possible; It is suggested that the graduate school cancel the teaching materials and deal with the topics (including fund support) declared by Professor Lu separately.

For the other four people, it is suggested that the Foreign Languages Institute take necessary measures according to their mistakes and understanding. Among them, on-the-job teachers studying for degrees should be dealt with in conjunction with graduate schools.

The reporter learned that Professor Lu's title is Deputy Secretary of the General Party Branch of the School of Foreign Languages of Fudan University, and his resume shows that he has edited many graduate English textbooks. The rest are young teachers from the Foreign Languages Institute.

Professor U of Fudan University's School of Foreign Languages, who asked not to be named, told Xinmin Weekly that the members of the school's Academic Standards Committee had sought the opinions of individual teachers of the School of Foreign Languages, and suggestions on how to deal with academic plagiarism of four young teachers, including Professor Lu, were announced at the faculty meeting of the School of Foreign Languages about two months ago. Professor Lu is a graduate of the English Language and Literature Department of Fudan University 1970, "the last one to enter the school before the Cultural Revolution".

Professor Ge Xiongjian, a member of the Academic Standards Committee of Fudan University, told Xinmin Weekly that the professor at the School of Foreign Languages has just turned 60. "This is a very serious punishment for him. If there is no such thing, he may be re-employed. He can work until he is 65. If we don't renew his appointment, it is equivalent to canceling his qualification to continue teaching; In addition, those young teachers are all his students, and he took the lead in doing so, which also hurt these students invisibly. Afterwards, he was also very sad and repeatedly reviewed with us and his leaders. He hopes to give him a chance to continue teaching, but we don't think the issue of principle can be accepted. "

Postdoctoral students steal other people's pictures.

The second academic violation came from online reporting. In mid-July, 2007, an anonymous letter named "Fake Event in the Field of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery in China" (hereinafter referred to as "the event") appeared on the well-known academic fake website "New threads", and reported the article published by Professor Chi in China Journal of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Volume 4 1 in February, 2006. Soon, the Disciplinary Committee of Fudan University and other relevant parties received an anonymous tip-off letter with the same content.

According to the relevant provisions of the Code, the Academic Standards Committee of Fudan University conducted a comprehensive investigation on this incident. After investigation, the first author of the article "Forgery and Plagiarism" involved in the letter was Liu, who worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the ENT Hospital of Fudan University from September 2004 to July 2006. The correspondent of the article is Professor Chi from the ENT Hospital, who was Liu's postdoctoral tutor at that time.

Liu admitted that the design and experiment of this report article was part of his work when he was a doctoral student in Zhengzhou. After he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Otolaryngology Hospital, in order to publish this part of his work, he stole some pictures of others to illustrate his point of view and wrote this article, which was funded by the national science and technology project. Other authors of the article (including Professor Chi) are not aware of his plagiarism.

On September 5, 2007, the Academic Committee of ENT Hospital studied the handling of the incident. The members attending the meeting believed that plagiarism was Liu's personal behavior, and Professor Chi was responsible for lax control. At the meeting, Professor Chi made a review.

In September last year, 14, the academic Committee of the institute voted by secret ballot and passed the handling opinion on this incident: 1, this paper was plagiarized; 2. Revoke and withdraw Liu's postdoctoral exit certificate; 3. Professor Chi stopped enrolling postdoctoral students for two years; 4. To a certain extent, informed criticism and his tutor Professor Chi conducted a review; 5. All departments should convey and reaffirm discipline and strengthen moral education in scientific research.

On September 30th last year, the plenary session of Fudan Academic Standardization Committee considered this incident and agreed with the investigation conclusions and handling opinions of the Academic Committee of ENT Hospital. It is also suggested that Liu's plagiarism be notified at the post-doctoral mobile station meeting of the whole school.

One article becomes two papers.

The third academic fraud incident also came from the report of New Threads website. On August 14, 2007, "New threads" appeared on the website, reporting that two papers of Professor Ye and Professor Gu from the School of Information of Fudan University were suspected of plagiarism. Soon, the school received a real-name tip-off letter from a retired teacher of the School of Information, saying that an English paper A and a Chinese paper B by Ye were basically the same. The author first published paper A in English at an international conference, and then translated it into paper B in Chinese and published it in Chinese journals, which is essentially the content of the same paper, some of which are suspected of plagiarizing paper C.

After receiving the report, the Academic Standards Committee of Fudan University instructed the School of Information to form an academic standards group to investigate the matter. After carefully comparing the contents of A and B papers with those of C papers, the Academic Standardization Group of the College found that 28 contents and two pictures in A paper were basically the same as those in C paper, and the formula used was the same, only some letters were replaced. It was considered that A and B papers were obviously suspected of plagiarizing C papers, while the Academic Standardization Group of the School of Information thought the report was true, and there were serious plagiarism in A and B papers. Ye is a doctoral student of Professor Gu. He admitted that these two papers were submitted to ISPCA International Conference and Exchange Journal independently. Professor Gu knew their contribution and agreed, but Ye forgot to give it to Professor Gu at the same time.

When the paper was reported for plagiarism, the author realized the seriousness of his mistake, and immediately apologized to the author C by e-mail, explained and apologized to the publications that published papers B and C, and made several written inspections.

On September 30th, June 365438+1October 3rd1day, June 35438+February 3rd, 2007, the Academic Standardization Committee of our university held three plenary meetings to consider the suspected plagiarism of two papers by Professor Ye and Professor Gu. The Committee believes that the report is true, and there are serious plagiarism in the two papers of Professor Ye and Professor Gu. Ye, as the main responsible person, suggested that the school expel his graduate student status; Professor Gu, the tutor, has an unshirkable responsibility for Ye's plagiarism, and suggests that the graduate school suspend Professor Gu from enrolling postgraduate qualifications within two years; It is also suggested that the school agree with Professor Gu's request to resign as the vice president of the School of Information.

Operation of Academic Standards Committee

In April, 2005, the Academic Standardization Committee of Fudan University was established after deliberation by the president's office meeting. As a special committee under Fudan Academic Committee, the Committee is mainly responsible for investigating and handling academic norms.

The first academic standards committee consists of seven members, with Yu Wujin, a professor at the School of Philosophy of Fudan University as the chairman. Other members include Ge Xiongjian, a professor at the Institute of Historical Geography of Fudan University; Professor Hua Min, School of Economics; Wang Xun, Professor of Physics Department and Academician of China Academy of Sciences; Zhu, Professor, Department of Light Source and Lighting Engineering; Professor Guo, School of Basic Medicine, Fudan University; And Lin Xiangtong, a professor at Huashan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University. Professor Yu Wujin introduced that Chen Xiaoman, vice president of Fudan University, was in charge of this work.

Hua Min emphasized that the reports accepted by the Academic Standards Committee include real names and anonymity, and informants are generally well prepared. At present, there are many ways to report, "there are letters from the masses, online reports, etc." Ge said that the Academic Standards Committee of Fudan University "received many complaints, not just these three, some reports exaggerated the facts, some did not follow up, but some reports were basically accurate. We investigated every report that was formally transmitted to our Academic Standards Committee. We will answer everything that can be answered. We tried our best. For example, if a unit has an anonymous report, we will also give the result to this unit and ask them to reply to the reporter as much as possible; For example, this time, considering that the other party reported it online, it was also published online in order to give a reply. "

Professor Ge Xiongjian believes that the problem faced by members of the Academic Standards Committee is how to deal with the matter after it is found out. "Of course, there will be different opinions. Our final conclusion should be shown to the reporters, who all admit their mistakes. However, it is human nature that the whistleblower always wants to be as lenient as possible. Plagiarism is written in black and white, and responsibility is sometimes difficult to identify. For example, there is a former vice president this time. According to the investigation, the student admitted that he did it himself and failed the teacher, but his article used the teacher's name. Like this kind of responsibility determination, we can at least determine. The student admitted and the teacher told the student. There is no evidence, only students and teachers can be identified.

Informants are in charge of the leadership work, but Hua Min thinks that the investigation of the Academic Standards Committee is aimed at academics, and "administrative duties are useless". He said that, on the whole, most scholars in Fudan University do their research according to scientific standards. Throughout the investigation, he did not encounter any intercession, such as putting the whistleblower's documents together with the copied original. "Take the tip-off, for example, whether he is academic infringement or plagiarism. Hard evidence is like a mountain, you can't escape. "

Regarding Fudan's comment on the lack of transparency in handling academic violations, Hua Min believes that "we just choose appropriate cases to issue announcements to show our determination to the society." He said that there have been similar incidents of investigating academic violations in Fudan in the past two years, but they have not been made public in the media. (According to Xinmin Weekly)
