Humans have used raw cotton for a long time. As early as 5000 BC or even 7000 BC, Central America may have begun to use it. It also has a history of 5000 years in the South Asian subcontinent. At least before 2000, China had adopted cotton fiber as textile raw material in Guangxi, Yunnan and Xinjiang. From about the middle of the Ming Dynasty, people generally put on clothes made of cotton cloth. Until now, cotton is still the main raw material for making clothes in China.

A blue cloth with a white pattern

China folk traditional craft printing and dyeing products were called "medicinal patch" in Song Dynasty and "flower watering cloth" in Ming Dynasty. It is said that they were invented by Jiading-Guixing. Nantong is the main producing area of blue calico in China, and homespun and natural bluegrass are farmers' daily routine, so the blue calico dyeing workshops in Qianzhuang Houfang were once spread all over rural market towns. Blue calico is mainly used to make daily clothes, quilts, mosquito nets, pillowcases, wrapping cloth and so on. The pattern of blue calico is simple, beautiful and auspicious, with animals, birds, flowers, trees and myths and legends as the themes, such as "Five Blessingg (a bat) celebrates longevity", "auspicious day with plenty of fish", "lion rolling hydrangea" and "carp yue longmen". Nowadays, blue printed cloth has developed from single-sided printing to double-sided printing, from monochrome to multicolor, from small cloth to wide cloth, from homespun to fine cotton grey cloth and cotton-linen blended cloth. There are more and more varieties of colors, such as blue calico door curtain, wall hanging, tablecloth, shoes and hats, handbags, toys and other handicrafts, especially blue calico fashion, which has become a beautiful landscape of the city.
